"Crying" is one of Roy Orbison's best songs. I'm glad you chose a slower tempo song because it really shows off Roy's operatic voice and incredible singing range. Heartbreaking lyrics but beautiful.
I saw him in concert shortly before his death and he was amazing. One great song after another... and hit those notes! The packed ampitheater went crazy. Greatest concert I've ever seen... and I've seen a lot.
4:23 My favorite part of reaction videos to Roy are when he hits those high notes, and the creators' eyes widen in amazement. My dad's a huge Big O fan, and I'm sure I was listening to Roy since I was in the womb!
This took me back. In the early 60s, I was lucky enough to see live a number of the then top US acts, here in the UK. The likes of Roy, Gene Pitney, Everley Brothers, Brenda Lee etc. And it was true - the audience sat and listened. Then the Beatles came on the scene and the girls' screaming drowned the music. Happy Days!
Roy’s voice is one of the greatest, EVER ! His song “The Comedians” is something of a masterpiece. It’s from his final album “Mystery Girl” (possibly his best album) . Thank you ladies. ✌️
Roy was known as "The Voice" because he was totally unique. He had a five range octave and could slide from one to another effortlessly. His Black and White Nights concert is amazing, Elvis's TCB Band played and the lineup of stars who came out to sing with Roy goes on and on. Roy has so many great songs, it's hard to pick just one. If you want a great one to review, check out Indian Summer with The Gatlin Brothers, Roy Orbison, and Barry Gibb. Really get a sense of Roy's range any why every artist wanted to sing with Roy.
Great song (love that Roy is singing about a subject that a man is usually at this time, not singing about, and his amazing vibrato in the high notes), you should check out KD Lang's version of this. She performed the song at the Roy Orbison tribute concert after his death, and when he was inducted into the songwriters hall of fame, on the request of his widow Barbara. She has basically inherited the song, and performs it at her concerts.
Yes please....check out KD Lang's cover. She will blow you away. She once said that this one song is the only song that she was nervous about doing because she has that much respect for Roy but she did it proper justice. ✌️
A beautiful vibrato, which as you did the Seekers yesterday I'll mention that Roy and Judith are my favourite male and female vibratos. Very consistent and even from the moment the first sound comes out of their mouth. I'd classify the song as Unrequited Love rather than Love or Breakup. It is post break up but it isn't about the break up. Running Scared is my favourite Big O song, such a dramatic and intense song, but he has so many wonderful songs in his catalogue. She's a Mystery to Me, Blue Bayou, Only the Lonely, I Drove All Night, In Dreams, Candy Man. Just so many but I'll try to control myself. I should be asleep now anyway. G'night.
This song was recorded very early in his career, as he looks so young. Later on his voice becomes a lot more powerful and the high notes much stronger. I always thought that he just kept getting better as time went on. So sad that he passed away from a heart problem much too soon - one of the all-time greats.
Thanks so much! Excellent choice of video also. It is both a Love song and a Heartbreaker. It really showcases Roy's vocal range being sad and Beautiful at the same time. No wonder Elvis loved Roy's Voice.
Girls, the song that you tried to play two live streams ago, "You're Only Lonely" was an ode to Roy Orbison's trademark style. The cover version you tried to play got blocked on the livestream, but the original by J D Souther (who wrote the song and knew and played for Orbison at times) is unmistakable in its reference to Roy's style! It was a number one hit for JD Souther in 1976. Perhaps at some point you guys cab try to react to his original version. It's a beautiful song! In the meantime, another Roy Orbison song I recommend is, "Only The Lonely"
For a founding member of rock and roll royalty, Roy had a tragic life. His beloved wife was killed before his eyes when the motorcycle she was riding was hit by a car. Years later while he was on tour his house caught fire and killed a couple of his children. When he wrote sad songs, he was living them.
NOONE ELSE COULD EVER SING THIS SONG LIKE ROY DOES! THE EMOTION AND "CRY" IN HIS VOICE IS WHAT MADE THIS SONG! LOVED YOUR REACTION TO THIS MUSIC VIDEO.
Great reaction, guys. I’ve always loved Roy Orbison and seen him sing live once in concert. He sounds exactly like his records. I’ve always loved “Only The Lonely “.
He was touring England in 1963 with a group you may have heard of...the Beatles. Supposedly John Lennon was upset that they were opening for him- they should be the Main act. Roy said no problem, I'll open for you.... After his set- the crowd booed the Beatles off the stage
This was an actual experience for Roy. He was in the barber shop when his ex was walking by. She saw him and stepped in to say hello, held hos hand for a minute and walked away. And then it all came rushing in on him...
It is a torch song. Like the expression "still carrying the torch for her." In very old times men used to walk a lady time carrying a torch to light the way.
Roy Orbison had such a great voice. He was reverenced by many artist including Elvis and the Bee Gees. His voice has a unique sound. An unusual video he sang with the Gatlin brothers and Barry Gibb is extremely good it is called Indian Summer. Love your reaction!
No one can sing as Roy can he was the greatest singer that ever graced this planet his voice was incredible he could go through the whole musical scale in one song he id it in this one .
I don't know how old pretty daughter is but I am 73 and Mom will probably remember how audiences used to be very respectful and quiet during a performance. Believe it or not..when I saw Led Zeppelin and Doobie Brothers in 1975 we were still respectful to the artists ,but it seems after that it has been chaos and every man and woman for themself at a concert. Keep up the great reviews. Peace.
My new favourite channel on YT hits it out of the park again! You two are so genuine and genuinely care about the music and each other, it is a treat every time I get to watch one of your reactions! Two recommendations for you, after this one: "She's A Mystery To Me" was a much later song by Roy on his last studio album, and you have to react to Roy singing this song "Crying" alongside his special guest kd lang! Cheers!
Treat yourselves to the duet Roy Orbison does with K.D. Lang performing this song on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson". The moment she sings...... "That the touch of your hand, Can start me crying." ............a star was born. Btw.....K.D. Lang's version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is one of the best....... ..........and, she does it barefoot!!!
If this song doesn't make you cry then I don't know what would. The kids in the audience back then were taught to be quiet, watch the show and be polite. The Beatles came later and they blew the doors off after their Mom's screamed for Elvis.
This is from a 1965 show, you may find that most TV performances from this era may appear a bit reserved. It's likely, because it is being filmed, that the audience have been briefed by the director to be respectful, they maybe only had one take at this and didn't want anything disrupting the recording. Mentioning that, the song begins with long extended shots of the audience and then only the backing band, even after Roy starts singing there's quite a lag before we actually see him. It looks like they were possibly having some technical issues, or it's just bad camera directing or no camera rehearsal and they were editing on the fly. Plus, for those cameras benefit, all the house lights are up, which can be very mood destroying for the audience and make them more self conscious. Having said that this is one of Roy's gentle ballads, so no one's going to be screaming to this one. One thing to note, which is not the case for most TV performances of the time, is that Roy and the band are actually performing live. The majority of TV show directors would not take the risk, they'd have the acts miming to their latest hit just to make things run smoother and quicker and not have to worry about micing everything up and attempting to replicate the record. The other option you may come across is they had a pre-prepared tape with just the backing tracks on, and just overdubbed the vocals live. All the acts of this time, of the 1960's and 70's were very capable of performing live, and as pop developed into rock, and a more rebellious era, a lot absolutely hated being made to mime for the TV cameras. Some would even goof about to make the point, barely bothering to pretend they were playing. BTW I would recommend a couple of cover versions of this song, the best I think is Don McLean's, but K D Lang also does a beautiful version too.
I saw Roy Orbison in concert in 1965 at Arizona State College (now Northern Arizona University) in Flagstaff, Arizona. It was held in the men's gym which had seating for ~2,500 and was less than half full. He was great!!!
I don't know if you've seen the David Lynch film "Mullholland Drive" but there is a heart wrenching acapella Spanish version of this song, sung so beautifully by a lady called Rebekah del Rio. The emotion is so intense you can actually feel it sort of vibrate around the room. So beautiful.
Only The Lonely - Dream Baby - In Dreams - Breaking Up Is Breaking My Heart - I Drove All Night - You've Got It. Songs from the beginning and tail end of Roy's career that you should listen and react too.
This being recorded live in studio, I think it likely that the audience has been asked to keep it mellow so as not to interfere with recording. I watched brief video of musicians talking about Roy Orbison, and they all marvelled at his professionalism, and at his ability to literally walk into the studio off the street, step up to the mic with no warmups, and be sharp enough to do a song in one take, if the band was up to it. He was a marvel in voice and phrasing.
This was late in his career at an 'invite only' event to honor and record him live, the band and back up were all stars in their own right, considering it an honor to be there. I believe it was called A Black and White Night, and can be found on RU-vid.
(MIkhail Biryukov here) Good choice! "Crying. Crying. Crying. Crying - over you" )) Who can resist that ) Yet I will be insistive and keep on recommending his "Love So Beautiful" - it is another of his latter-day gems; I love it - especially the bridge, it is breathtaking, with just a few notes!.. Go for it ))
Doesn't this show how much recording of live performances have improved. So long before we even see Roy. Then we see shots of his back. Nothing can detract form his performance though.
This looks like it was in a tv studio. If that's the case, it was being broadcast live, the audience was instructed not to scream during the performance ,( because they would drown out the performance) but to wait until the end. Beautifully sung sad love song. Roy knocked it out of the park by keeping it slow, soft and emotional.
Actually......when you read the lyrics, it IS a love song, not a heartbreak one. The only heartbreak is that he has been heartbroken to be away from his woman. This song is describing his feelings......perhaps even in a letter to her......but most certainly in his thoughts. The story simply expresses his true feelings for his love......read the lyrics.
In the 60's we behaved in concerts. We came to listen to the person or band. We didn't want to hear the person next to us singing the song and miss the one on stage. Why even go to a concert if you can't hear the one you paid to hear and see? Great reaction by the way. Keep up the good work, please.
Don McLean did a nice cover of this song "Crying" worth a listen. He also did another song you Ladies might like called "Vincent" and another titled "Since I Don't Have You "…. Both intriguing
