This was a major hit in 1970. (from wiki) The song won five awards at the 13th Annual Grammy Awards in 1971, including Grammy Award for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It is Simon & Garfunkel's most successful single, and it is often considered their signature song; it topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for six weeks, and also reached number one in the United Kingdom, Canada, France and New Zealand. It reached the top five in eight other countries, eventually selling over six million copies worldwide. It became one of the most performed songs of the 20th century, covered by over 50 artists, including Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin and Johnny Cash. It is ranked number 66 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

This song never fails to move me. Okay, let's just be clear, anything that Simon and Garfunkel do together moves me, entertains me, inspires me to want to write something that makes someone feel the way their songs make me feel. Paul Simon is one of the best pop/folk/rock songwriters ever. And, I've been saying for years that if Art Garfunkel and Karen Carpenter had had children together, at least one of those kids would have had the world's most perfect pop singing voice.

I'm so glad you're introducing the music of Simon & Garfunkel to your channel. Great choice. Once again, mom proves that mothers know best. They are easily one of my top 5 favorite duos. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is a great song to start with. Such a classic. In fact, it swept the Grammy Awards for 1970 winning Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year, and Album Of The Year. One of my all-time favorite concerts was the Simon & Garfunkel Central Park Concert on HBO Cable Television in 1981. Anyway, other great songs of theirs to explore and react to are "Sound Of Silence", "Mrs. Robinson", "Cecilia", "The Boxer", "Homeward Bound", "Scarborough Fair" and "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feeling Groovy)."

A fantastic piece, Paul Simon's emotional writing at it's best , and Art Garfunkel's angelic voice given a showcase for his amazing vocal range. The sentiment is one everyone can relate to, that we all need support at some time. The unfortunate irony of this song's massive success is that the long term friendship between the duo was already fragmenting. Simon knew he had a classic song and had set the bar so high for himself that it may be hard to follow it up, and the pressure of being the primary songwriter was becoming more and more difficult. As well as his superb voice, Art got more attention for his looks too, he was getting offered acting roles in movies which left Paul holding the fort in the studio. The 'Bridge over troubled water' album has many songs expressing Paul's concerns. Some tracks had thinly veiled references aimed at Art such as 'Frank Lloyd Wright', and 'Why don't you write me?', and a passing reference in 'The only living boy in New York' where Paul felt abandoned by his old soulmate. Probably the second strongest track on the album is the majestic 'The boxer', where Paul relates to the character who is taking life's punches but still fighting on. The pressures of coming up with the goods are also expressed in 'Keep the customer satisfied', 'Song for the asking', and the fun track 'Cecelia' a song about the fickle changes and fashions of the music business. In live performance the song 'Bridge over troubled water' was an instant highlight of their shows, but Simon was superfluous to requirements for this number and he would wait it out in the wings while Art received all the glory. In addition it was often a common misconception by press and fans that they wrote their songs together, adding to Paul Simon's frustration and even a little bitterness, Art's contribution was mostly in the harmonies, with just a few exceptions (such as the occasional cover version) the songs were Paul's. This album was in everyone's LP collections and remained in the top of the charts for months, it is now a multi - Platinum album around the world, but it was to be their swansong. Apart from occasional live reunions over the years their professional relationship never fully recovered from this point on. Although both unquestionably acknowledging the talents of the other, and being able to survive one -offs or short tours together, they never again released another totally original album together. The deeper the friendship the more painful the divide when it fades.

This was the fifth and final studio album for Simon and Garfunkel. Despite numerous accolades, the duo decided to split up, and parted company later in 1970; Garfunkel continued his film career, while Simon worked intensely with music. Both artists released solo albums in the following years. Bridge includes two of the duo's most critically acclaimed and commercially successful songs, "Bridge over Troubled Water" and "The Boxer", which were listed on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Critically and commercially successful, the album topped the charts in over ten countries and received two Grammy Awards, plus four more for the title song. The album sold around 25 million records; making it at the time of release the best-selling album of all time. It has been ranked on several lists, including at number 172 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Talk about a group going out on top!

I’ve heard that the success of this song sung by Art Garfunkel was a large contributor to their breakup. They were already having problems, but Simon was resentful that it did better than songs on which he sang lead. Garfunkel kind of needled him about it, as well.

I did confirm it with my brother. He spent 2 tours as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, and said Yes, this was a big war song.

I thought this song conveyed the promise of an enduring heavenly love to those who need comfort and protection when times get lonely and hard. We all have times when even friends cannot be found when we need them. A gentle and beautiful reminder sung with love and peace.

This song--and the entire LP--is forever seared into my memory. In April 1970, my family bought a huge Victorian style home in an incorporated village which meant a new school district, new friends and most importantly, my own room. At 12 yrs old, this was a major event in my life. The Bridge Over Troubled Water LP was released earlier that same year and I spent many hours listening to it on my headphones. Looking back, it felt like I was in a dream world sometimes bcuz I was now in a much bigger and much older house, I'd often get slightly disoriented. Each and very song on BOTW brings me back to that special moment and makes me smile. That now feels as if it was a past life experience.

Paul Simon was startled to discover that Elvis had taken on a song he’d written, although he did say it was a “touch on the dramatic side, but so was the song”. He continued, stating: “When I first heard Elvis perform ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, it was unbelievable. I thought to myself: ‘How the hell can I compete with that?'”. Years later, after Simon found himself unable to remove the line “I’m going to Graceland” from his head and felt compelled to make a pilgrimage to the site. The experience was one he described as a “religious thing”, and it had a lasting impact on the singer-songwriter. “I went to Graceland, and I didn’t tell anyone I was coming, I didn’t get any special treatment. I went there walked around and I was unimpressed. Until you finish the tour and come outside. And then there’s his grave,” he once remembered. Simon continued, “He had a God-given talent that he shared with the world. And without a doubt, he became most widely acclaimed; capturing the hearts of young and old alike. And I just started to cry, and I thought it’s really true. This guy was loved by everybody. Being in the crowds at Graceland… it’s almost like a religious thing.” Despite their vast musical differences, in an unlikely turn of events through this cover and his emotional voyage to Graceland, Simon’s career will always be inextricably linked to Elvis. From the moment The King put his take on ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, Simon no longer had ownership of the track, and eventually, Presley would repay the favour from beyond the grave... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mLbOBoa8vD8.html

The last verse where he says her time has come to shine but if she needs a friend he's sailing right behind, so powerful! Sometimes the best way to help someone is not to help but let them see that they have the strength to "shine" on their own. Makes me think of my kids and having to let them fall so that they can pick themselves up and go on even though you want to just cradle them so they never get hurt. So many great songs from these two.
