Roy Wood Jr makes a triumphant return to the podcast and he and Mike pick up right where they left off. The two old friends discuss the evolution of unconnected jokes into a more cohesive whole hour of stand-up. They discuss why Mike, Neal Brennan, and Chris Rock are all pressuring Roy to go even deeper with his new material about his dad. Mike and Roy break down the best bits from Roy’s new special Imperfect Messenger, and Roy shares two all-timer stories in the slow round. Plus, Roy gets candid on exactly why he may or may not be hosting The Daily Show.

Man, I am so very interested in what this man has to say and impressed by his natural openness in a variety of conversations. 🙌 One of the coolest comedians and a true OG

I feel like the direct line between the single mom story and the material about his father is the moment of making that decision of whether to stay or leave. To think about what that kid's experience would have been and to prioritize that over your own desires. That's what healing generational trauma looks like -- it's being able to have that sober moment of reflection and to make a different choice than your ancestors would have made. This conversation was a gift.

I hope to see him host the daily show if he wants that. I am excited about Jon being back but man I loved when Roy was at that desk.

Still enjoying these conversations from comedians with comedians on comedy. It's fun when comedians go on podcasts and talk about other stuff, or helpful when they are with non comedians and break things down for common folk. But there's also learning and entertaining in this set up, and I'm appreciating it

I'll out myself as old if I admit how long I've liked Roy's comedy. (Mike's, too. 😂) Thank you guys for the great conversation! Edit: Also, Roy could approach any subject in his stand up, I agree with Mike. He's so thoughtful and measured, as a fan, I'd listen to anything he has to say.

First time I've seen an interview with Roy just being himself (i.e. not doing stand up / daily show segments) and damn I love the guy even more.

Roy is brilliant. Truly started following his work after the White House correspondent’s dinner. Masterful.

These are two masterful comedians having a raw, honest conversation. Roy has incredible stories and experiences. I love his journey to learning more about his dad as a man and professional. That burial plot story was shocking! It shows how complicated family relationships are. I also agree that the story about sex with the neglectful mother in Michigan could go in the special. It is an amazing story. As Roy was telling it, I could picture it vividly and I couldn't get enough. He ties it to race when he says he was a drunk, black man in a nice, white neighborhood running away from a white woman at 1 in the morning. He paints a stark picture of how wrong it could have gone. Roy could talk about anything, and the audience would believe that he be fuckin'.

Yeah I love how his story came full circle to the seemingly unrelated joke from the beginning. Like I love the story about the customer at Golden Corral had Roy’s back at the end of the story.

I wonder if the opening to his dad material could springboard off the drunk bar hopping mom’s kid saying, ‘…where were you…’ Maybe Roy ran not only out of eff this survival instinct; the inner child for Roy probably wanted to ask his dad that same question. Love both of your brains!💖✨😅😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hearing him talk about how in his head he is about what we, his audience, will go with him on and what we won't is interesting and unsurprising, knowing his comedy. Wherever he goes, we're down. I'd listen to Roy talk about anything.

The 5:35 part where he talks about his son getting bigger, saying, "I don't have the rotator cuff for that sheet now." I feel that one. I realized it with my son after a day of tossing him into the air in the hotel pool. Not so easy now that he's north of 50 lbs. :)

Roy's story about going home with that woman and finding out she had a kid, reminded me of a scene in "Six Feet Under." Except Nate *stays* and f*cks her and it's so disheartening because you want Nate to be making better decisions for himself, but him deciding to stay shows he is going down hill. Anyway, my take is Roy made the right decision and it's still an f'n good story.
