This video is a first impression review of Royal Canin Large Breed Puppy. This was requested by a viewer. Royal Canin is a popular pet food brand that is often regarded as producing great foods. They often specialize in breed specific foods and have a very large portfolio. This food meets most all of our check boxes for a large breed puppy (greater than 50-70 lbs as an adult) and appears to be a good pick on initial review!

Royal Canine also has a giant breed puppy that meets the analysis parameters that you are using. Maybe check it out. I have a Spinone Italiano that I think I am going to switch over to the Royal Canine Giant breed puppy since it has less calcium. Thanks for the videos - they are great. It's great to have a professional offer us guidance based on medical training/experience. :)

Royal Canin is part of the Mars Pet Care companies. They are a global company with their headquarters in Amargus France. It was founded in 1968 by a French Veterinarian

Hi there, Thanks so much for this video really appreciate it. However I got a question, I’m a bit confused with the Royal canin puppy maxi and the Regular Royal canin German shepherd puppy. I own a German shepherd, therefore which one should I feed her? The maxi or regular? Because what’s confusing me is both the product has the picture of a German shepherd, Hope you could clear my doubts 😞 Thank you!

The breed specific and mini/maxi are all just marketing for the most part, that’s why it’s confusing. Wich ever one you like that fits the large breed puppy standards

I would really appreciate a video on ingredients. Could you also explain feeding trials/peer reviewed research on dog foods and what that looks like? I have been trying to find a good food for my dog. I have been told that the only foods with peer reviewed research or feeding trials are Eukanuba, Purina Proplan, Hills science diet and Royal Canin. Currently, I have been feeding my dog honest kitchen but only because a friend recommended it and my dog seemed to have an allergic reaction to something in proplan. I have been having the hardest time finding the peer reviewed articles in google scholar related to these foods. Edit: Also thank you for this video, I really appreciate the info

I dont think you will find many peer reviewed articles on specific foods, but I certainly can do a video on what it the legal definition is for food trial to list that as a lable claim.

@@AnimalDocRea Thank you so much! I was wondering if there are any good health indicators that you could talk about when it comes to the food? Also how long after switching foods should we expect to see positive results if they’ll occur - like improved coat health, activity levels or mood? Also do indicators like shiny coat, soft coat, fewer stools than before or more stool than before, increased activity level, or appearing less hungry mean that a certain dog food is better quality than before?

I like how you go over the ingredients. Corn is the first ingredient, but then you read chicken by product meal as”chicken.” And then skip over all the other shitty ingredients like the wheat and other garbage but then continue to say this is a mostly chicken based food. Very helpful review doc thank you for the education

that ingredient list is a major source of manipulation for pet food companies, they love to do that crazy math and ingredient splitting to trick you all up. they rely on the fact that most people don't know their tricks, but hopefully you can spot the tricks now

It’s would depend on lots of ancillary factors not related to Nutrition because I think both are high scoring foods. I have no preference as it pertains to the nutrition provided.

@@donald6845 it is cheap, but companies don’t use it as a filler in the sense you are speaking of, they use it to provide a subset of nutrients. I’m not saying it’s great, I’m saying it serves a purpose even if that purpose is to bring cost down for consumers. I can, but its important to realize there is no actually standard for the Frenchie breed as far as nutrition. We would have to review it based on certain issues these brachycephalic breeds tend to develop and go from there. There are lots of good brands, just use our tips to avoid marketing pitfalls and maybe look for a "small bites" type kibble if your puppy is really small so it can learn to chew.
