Before 1362, king Casimir III the Great founded a brick stronghold on the Warta River, in place of a previously existing structure (a stone tower surrounded by a wooden palisade, probably built by Bolesław the Pious, Henry III of Głogów, Wenceslaus II of Bohemia, or Władysław I the Elbow-high). Interestingly, the castle was located quite a considerable distance from the town of Koło and was a separate defensive structure. The peak of the stronghold's splendor occurred in the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century - king Władysław II Jagiełło, Casimir IV Jagiellon, and Sigismund I the Old visited here. In later years, the stronghold lost its importance and was already described as destroyed during the Swedish invasion in 1655: perhaps it was done by the Swedes themselves, but it is possible that the invaders found a neglected and damaged building. In the 18th century, the castle served as the seat of the Bernardine Order, but its poor technical condition forced the monks to leave it around 1768. The following years brought the final degradation of the building: some of the walls were demolished, building materials were obtained at random, and the overflowing Warta River caused further devastation. After World War II, the stronghold was left in the form of a permanent ruin and remains in such a state to this day. The main tower, fragments of the gate (eastern side), the southern wall and part of the western wall have been preserved. Currently, the ruins of the former Koło castle are located within the administrative boundaries of the village of Gozdów, bordering Koło.
