Not a comprehensive oil change guide, seeing as I don't cover the two oil strainer plugs located in the underside of the crankcases, which should also be removed for inspection / cleaning, but a few points are covered here which might be of interest to some.

You seem relaxed about the incorrect timing. I would have thought this was important to get right. On another note I went to the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum this week. What an amazing collection of old machines. Every configuration of engine and final drive arrangement you could think of has all been done before. Thank you Paul.

Thanks - I was responsible for the 'incorrect' timing - it was deliberate!

I do have a concern about the potential for a vacuum to form in the oil tank on some models. I don't think it's an issue with those press and turn caps which I think have a vent hole in them anyway? And if I'm seeing correctly, you have a bunded breather on that bike so it's vented to atmosphere? My concern has been more with the ones with the screw-in type oil cap with an o-ring seal.

Was it advisable to reset the gears to the proper marks as you noted?

Only if you want to lose power and go slower - I retarded that cam in the first place!

On the gear above the rear cam, should there be a thrust washer? If so how thick? Mine has thrust washers on all but that one.

There should be four in total, one on either side of the idler gears. www.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/partsbook-pages/3721

Hello Paul,Geoff here from Angelsey....did you say the seal on the crankcase was not...a bonded in type ?? I have had a number of loose ones of the rubber synthetic type on the 350 and just thought they were loose ?????

Hi Geoff, there are the loose cork type, loose rubber type and bonded in rubber type [which can occasionally come loose, just to add to the fun!] My Brother Ian will be on Anglesey this weekend forthe racing, and has our RE 350 racer with him, wearing the number 4, if you might want to take a look!
