Great video. I'm in the habit of using a little liquid gasket to help hold the RE tappet cover gasket in its groove. Let it set before refitting the cover. Much easier to align to the cylinder head fir a good fit. Well done! 😊

Just a word of warning about the valve cover bolts - don't torque them down to 12nm; they are lightweight shoulder bolts and bottom out before reaching 12nm. Heaps of folk are snapping them at 12nm, they just need to be snugged down. The service manual suggested torque is far too high.
@glennpaulellis1172

Valve cover bolts to exact torque while compressing a rubber washer, vs spark plugs exposed to the full pressure of the combustion chamber 'hand tight about right'. All instruction manuals should be read with caution :)

Blowing grit away from the base of the spark plugs was a professional touch! And marking the parts as they come off was *better* than professional!

Hey mate, thanks for your work. Love and peace from Germany 🇩🇪 A Tip: I did the valve Adjustment and if you follow the steps in this video so far to the point before removeing the Rocker Cover (lift it up a little bit) rotate the crankshaft so far that the rocker carrier RH (right) from cylinder head and the valve springs are pressed down. See 9:07. I is much easier to get the cover of if you take this step. Maybe Dorman was lucky and it was pressed down so he did not had to mention it :D

Was so worried that the blue paper you used to plug the spark plug holes would get sucked into the engine as you turned it over! Phew, they didn't get sucked in😀

Yea I had the same concern which is why i didn’t do it the first time. only put them in loose in the top wider part to stop and accidents, any suction would have sucked past. Would have made for an entertaining video though!

Great video, really usefull! Much easier to think about doing a job like this when you have watched someone else do it really well. I havent seen your other videos what happened to your tank or is that something we shouln't mention. Could probably be masively improved with those tools they use inside panels and tap in high spots as you go with panel beating (little) hammer, maybe a little filler then brush paint damaged area and blend with ever finer wet'n dry. Great job with valve clearances and cool bike.

Clockwise or anticlockwise is really splitting hairs as far as valve clearance is concerned. As long as the rockers are positioned on the cam base (and a few degrees this way or that way off TDC on the compression stroke really doesn't matter). What matters is whether clockwise or anticlockwise force can potentially loosen the nut on crankshaft, while turning it.

@@daveinwla6360 it probably doesn't matter but I have always done it the way the engine rotates.
@daveinwla6360
@daveinwla6360 4 года назад
@@fazer094 - Yes, I also think that it doesn't matter - because of the many degrees of crank rotation during which the cam lobe is not in contact with a tappet, and the valve clearance can be set anywhere in that range of degrees.
@tonyhilliam2407
@tonyhilliam2407 2 месяца назад
When you turn the crank anti-clockwise from the left side using the tool, the timing chain is going in the direction as if the engine is running, this ensures you are not stressing the slack side of the timing chain where the chain tensioner runs👍

Hi mate. It seems you were right the second time. The magneto bolt on the Interceptor is not a reverse thread. I stumbled upon this video and it shows the magneto bolt being removed. Sorry for this never ending controversy but atleast this will finally put this issue to bed. And it seems the manual was actually correct. Heres the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--KfgrmvCAbc.html P.S watch it from 2:46

@@McFaddis I found a solution to this controversy. Just put the bike on the center stand and onto a high gear and turn the rear wheel in the forward direction in increments until the mark is aligned with TDC. No need to even remove the crankshaft hole cover.

Re *clockwise vs. anti-clockwise* turn of the crank: Could it be that it *makes no difference* ? The valves being adjusted are closed, and the tappets are over the base of the cam lobe (where the lobe is circular), and the tappets aren't affected by small amounts of cam/crank rotation. The play in the engine, especially in the cam chain, is probably too small in either direction to allow a rising part of the cam lobe to touch the tappet and to affect the clearance.
@daveinwla6360
@daveinwla6360 4 года назад
Or maybe I'm missing something? Does the cam chain care which way it turns the cam?
@DormanDiaries
@DormanDiaries 4 года назад
The risk seems to be skipping the cam chain messing up the valve timing, I can’t see that happening however at such slow careful rotations.
@daveinwla6360
@daveinwla6360 4 года назад
@@DormanDiaries - Yes, I think that's it. The goal is to have a straight pull by the crank sprocket on the cam sprocket without an intervening tensioner. Assuming that the crank turns anti-CW as seen from the left side of the engine, and since the timing chain tensioner is inserted from the back of the engine (as seen in the workshop manual), one would expect that one should turn the crank anti-CW to avoid putting slack on the drive side (the front side) of the chain. But the workshop manual consistently throughout shows graphically, and textually directs, a CW rotation. There is even a caution box that says, "DO NOT rotate crankshaft anti-clockwise". The workshop manual that one can find as a PDF online, is for the 2019 BS4 Interceptor. Perhaps it has been revised for the BS6 model.
