@@abingdonboy Royal Marine Commandos were being used as a standard infantry at times in Iraq carrying out routine patrols of towns. With some technical training they could be doing the same job as US navy seals or Green Berets but instead are used in the most ridiculous ways. I also suspect they intend to use them like US Army Rangers to act as a rapid reaction shock troop that can be deployed in certain zones.

SuperVHSchannel military budget has consistently been cut for the last 20 years. Although you are right they could have stopped it. I think we are still very high on military spending globally tho. Think we are in top 5

British commandos are already are trained to operate as small teams hence why they are called Commandos. It was the SAS and SBS that copied the Commando structure.

airhab the C8 isn’t as old as the SA80. Yes it’s not the newest weapon but we already have them in service so why spend money on another new rifle and all the gear that comes with it when just order more of a weapon that we already have. The M4 is the same age as the C8 but the C8 is built to a higher quality and has ambidextrous controls

airhab doesn’t matter how old it is mate, the 1911 sidearm was US issue for 70 years. It’s about the l85 being garbage especially for the Royal Marines

There is a fleet service that specializes in that. The problem with the british armed services is it so poorly funded to begin with that Royal Marine Commando were being used as a traditional infantry unit and shock troop.

Liam What do you classify as a war crime.... Bit like cancel culture, what you do today can have consequences that are not even thought of in the heat of a Kinetic contact with an enemy..... Until it is laid at your feet retrospectively many years later....

It was, but over the years they have been used as a more conventional infantry to the point that the line between them and them and regular army infantry has become blured. This is new change is them going 'back to their roots' of them truly being the navy's elite amphibious infantry men. Baring in mind I just a civilian so feel free to ask an actual member of the military if you get the chance.

Like Wilson said, they were used more recently as a conventional fighting force because that is what was needed in places like Afghanistan. They were essentially super-fit infantry with a wider skill-set, and although they were sent on different and arguably harder missions they were basically being used as regular infantry. They are now trying to refocus on the Commando aspect of being a Royal Marine which is why their new Uniforms will pay tribute to the original Commandos from WWII.

@@Bullet-Tooth-Tony- Yeah I believe that is the idea. As some have said, it looks like it might be a cover up for them trying to save money, BUT it raises a very good point. Royal Marines will be conducting more raids behind enemy lines for example (if necessary) and conducting covert operations, things like that. The Royal Marines are also specialists in extreme conditions such as the extreme cold. It might be a bit vague bit think of them as the in-between from the infantry and Special Forces. Not quite special forces but so much more than regular infantry.

@Raj Maj They are blanks, the noise they make when shot isnt very loud, not like when you are shooting with live ammo.

@Raj Maj We use the EXACT same blanks in the Danish army where i am currently serving, and have the exact same rules about always wearing hearing protection when shooting them. But that doesnt change the fact that blank ammunition makes nowhere near the volume of noise as live ammunition does, even tho its intention is to imitate it as best as possible, if not exposed to the sounds of blanks being fired over a severely long period of time, and especcialy if one is an observer as force news is here, and not the person having their ears downright next to the rifle, one could most defently avoid having ear protection in and barely notice.

@Raj Maj I shoot and observe fellow soldiers shooting blanks all day long, and my hearing is fine as i wear my hearing protection when i myself am shooting, but as an observer the sound is barely noticeable standing behind whatever soldier is currently shooting, comparing the sound level of shooting a blank with shooting live munition is laughtable when you are regularly exposed to the sound of both on a next to daily basis.

@Akira Sharma-Barkess Akira. I'm interested. Do you have a link to this concept? Because as it is I agree with some of Pincer 88s post. There are worries the LPD's, 29 RA, the CLR, 24 RE, all being chopped, removing another deployable brigade from the ORBAT. I can appreciate and understand the desire for more smaller units to operate in the "grey zone" and they started this years back by removing 42 from conventional "green" ops. Problem is, those potential enemies operating in the grey zone are also building up their conventional forces at the same time, while we cut ours, continuing a process that has been going on for decades. Endless cuts. Of course the politicians spin it differently with the usual "modernising" statements. Old hat! They were saying the same in the defence reviews of 1995, 1997, 2004, 2010. If they are retaining the current mass as you say I'd be pleased. But how are they getting from ship to shore? In what craft? If the LPD's go that is the LCVP and LCU gone too, as a Bay can only carry the 1. LPD takes 4 of each. The current ORC/ RIBs or new? The CHF Merlins transferred to the RN from the RAF are limited in number. Ideally more are needed. Where is the plan for new increased firepower? More fast landing craft or FIC type vessels, maybe some more helicopters to operate from the LSS conceptual ships they had planned. Because as it is they seem to have new uniform, personal weapon and some small UAV.

My fear too Pincer. I do not think the CHF will be under threat, I'm more concerned that 3 Cdo is removed from the ORBAT as a deployable brigade, the Commando's reduced in size considerably, and 29RA, 24RE either cut or returned and absorbed into the army. And that does not amount to 5 billions, nowhere near that. I also highlight, like threats to 16AA, how these units contribute to the UKSF, and the knock on effect on that magnificent organisation.

Because it sucks how many safety precautions you have to take before even touching one round of simmunition. The training area should be closed off 100% for public. Blanks are good enough for training maneuveres. Not even mentioning the costs.

More of a special forces, small teams on high Readiness that can be anywhere in the world in hours. They will be followed by larger number of troops if need be... but what’s the point, the future of warfare. Is millions of Swarming suicide drones. With Pilots 1,000km away from the battlefield. Imagine millions of them

@@mrwood4557 Future of warfare has nothing to do with the world right now or the next 10 years claiming that Bots are going to be the next big thing does not mean it is going to happen over night or in 2030. Royal Marine Commandos can already work in small teams to carry out Commando raids. When you do Commando training the emphasis on tactics and capability is to be able to work in small teams. Royal Marine Commandos can already operate as a forward raiding group for larger forces.

So what do you mean by a longer barrel then? The SA80 and C7 both have 'full length' barrels at circa 20" the C8 is 16.5". So what are you suggesting it should be?

@@ancientmachine9070 With modern weapon systems transport planes can get shot down easily, look at the Russia vs Ukraine war. its still a good way to deploy small spec ops teams but probably not a whole company of Para’s, too risky.
