Royal Marines from 42 Commando yomped across Dartmoor over three days to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Falklands conflict.
Across the country, Royal Marine Commandos have been marking the anniversary of the Falklands by replicating 45 Commando's three-day yomp across East Falkland.

Makes me think of my dad, 1939 to 1946, WW2 Commando, part of the Spearhead. I'm so proud of him (RIP), and these young men 🇬🇧 .

My father's oldest brother was an original too. I didn't know him well and our family didn't talk about the war like it was a source of great stories so I don't know much. I know he trained at Achnacary and was at the invasion of Sicily. If the four brothers were in a group photo, you'd pick him out as being the hard man of the lot.

I'm very proud of the British contribution to these endeavours in our shared history of doing the right thing when ever they heard the call to serve. Cheers!

The Royal Marines who were recreating the yomp, seem to have rather small rucksacks, I wonder if carrying as much ammo as possible and everything else they needed, made the original yomp a little more challenging.

If we'd known it was a race we wouldn't have given them the 6mile head-start of being on Wireless Ridge or let them move a Battalion 30 miles by helicopter. (It's funny how you never hear the Veg talk about that bit 🤷🏻‍♂️)

The primary purpose was to establish a naval base where ships could be repaired and take on supplies in the region. This might possibly count as an invasion, since a group of about 75 French colonists were living on the islands; they'd arrived the previous year. However, the British hadn't known the French were there.

Not quite. Britain had established claims to the islands that France had recognised in 1690, france had settled with the intent to spark a war in the south Atlantic to distract the RN so they could invade the British mainland, as revenge for the seven years war

@@JammyDodger45 haha, yea when we had no more ammo and there was about 30 blokes left after fighting a Panza division. Not bad for lightly armed airborne warriors. You lot still had ammo you should of bugged out and did commando stuff. Instead of trying to fight against overwhelming odds. The boss made a mistake there Imagine the damage the booties could of done. Commando raids setting up OPs sending intell back to the task force commanders.

@@carlseddon2392 - the FI Governor ordered them to creasefire to avoid civilian casualties, a decision made in agreement with Whitehall. They were fighting to protect Islanders from a regime that had already killed 30,000 of its own people. It's not a difficult scenario to understand.

@goopyjoe

It's a calculated and minimal risk. Precautions are taken to minimize injury. Just like when you drive a car you wear a seatbelt to minimise injury and drive as safely as possible, but if you want to be 100% safe you'd never leave your house.

It's to emulate their brothers all those years ago. To show others and themselves they are still ready to do the same. And you never know, maybe technology will some day let you down. And anyway, not doing something like this because of injuries is an insult to the uniform.
