I wish there was a repair shop like this near me. I’ve got a 1941 quiet deluxe that works perfectly fine, except when I return the carriage it will more often than not, stop one space after the magic margin. So say I have it set at 1.0, it will stop at 1.1. Sometimes I have to push the carriage to get it to stick at 1.0, sometimes it works perfectly. This happens anywhere I have the left margin set, so it makes me think something is going on with the margin itself. But that’s way above my skill level and I do not want to take this machine apart.
One thing I have noticed on most of the typewriters I have seen both in person and online there's holes in the carriage rails. Are they there for any mechanical reason or was it to relieve the stress on the metal while forming?
Most typewriters, probably all with holes on the rails, use a ball bearing surrounded with a star. The star keeps ball bearing in the proper position cause it corresponds to the holes. If I could post a picture it almost would be self explanatory.
depend on how it's failing, most of the time the linkage is bent right near the b/s pawl but pawl can also chipped or broken. Very tight quarters on these Royals
Thanks for the reply, to put it in layman's terms, when i engage the backspace key it simply will not hold the backspace. Hold the key down and it stays let go of the key and it disengages and slips forward to the original space. Very tight space no doubt. Being a novice typist and no experience with typewriter repair I am stumped. I don't see obvious signs of damage or mis alignment but what do I know😆!!
Hi. I bought one yesterday and it looks amazing, no rust, clean... but the keys don't hit the paper, space bar doesn't move the carriage and when you type, the carriage doesn't move. Help!!!!
Something is bent on your QDL. These Royal are prone to this, especially if shipped, shipping damage. This is a hard thing to pinpoint, they bend in different ways, complicated and crowded escapement area complicates things Side by side comparison with a good machines will help, lots of trial/error.
Nope. I would need to investigate/troubleshoot, never heard or seen that. My favorite kind of repair, consistent, just a process of elimination, find the bind or interference
Tan bar ? maybe Tab bar ? If your carriage is binding, most of the time this needs analysis to be done in person, Troubleshooting movement, binding, is best done by feel and visually
