Just got one yesterday exactly the same model, 1952 matte gray, can only replicate one of the sellers reported issues, the 1/4-1/2 type slug sticks. The rollers all hard but otherwise in good shape. The magic margins are sticky too, not a big deal. Even the ribbon has life left. I can go very fast on it. Paid $35, local Marketplace seller. The Royal marketing department calls the paper bail the “Automatic Paper Lock,” the base model called the Arrow only has a “Paper Bail.” It seems the difference is the QDL Automatic Paper Bail articulates forward as well as up whereas the Paper bail only lifts up. And the best part…THE BELL WORKS!

I love your videos. So helpful. I just had a Royal Companion shipped to me that was working when it shipped, but now the carriage doesn't advance when typing or hitting space bar. Back space button is the only thing that makes it move. I can use the carriage release button and it moves back and forth freely. I checked the spring and draw cord after watching your other excellent video. No problem with that. It was shipped inside its carrying case with no packaging materials. One of the brackets broke loose in transit. Any idea what to check next? I was hoping to gift it to my daughter for Valentine's. Thanks.
@@angelabowman8016 Most all escapements are directly under carriage in middle using a star wheel and pawls to space, Royal is very unaccessible With any shipping damage other things could easily be out of whack preventing operation Inspection by an experienced tech might be the only way to diagnosis exactly
Phoenix Typewriter, I don’t have one near me. I see the star wheel, not sure what the pawls are. There is a piece “dangling” near the wheel that looks as though it should connect to something. I will keep trying to figure this out. Thank you.
I finally cleaned my Quiet de Luxe and noticed that the "a" types low on lower case and the "q" prints high on lower case. However, they both are the correct height on upper case. Any suggestions or is this just the "fingerprint" of this machine?

Oil and a wire brush, repeat . . . . If it's really bad, I . . . . forgetaboutit ! Sometimes I disassemble and wire wheel. I have never used "rust removers" but others do, Access can be difficult and time involved is a huge factor for me
I usually get mine from the local profesional automotive paint distributor, PPG product But both Homedepo and walmart have LT too. not much difference between brands I don't think
MG 401 is about as close to the professional typewriter chemical AMES 5% spray, Ames has be out of production 20+ yrs. I found a product called "contact cleaner" and is used to clean electronics components, like mainboards, electric contacts, etc. Have no solvent and the composition is N-hexane and propellant. Do you know anything about this?? Thank you
