I did this twice 93 & 99, we slummed for 3 weeks but i've lived on leanders and 42's so no big deal. It was a highlight for me to be involved and Earls Court was always packed with people, a fabulous experience and one that made you feel proud to be part of the RN!
I remember going to this as a child and it really brought a massive sense of place pride and identity that the British isles had. It was just brilliant Would be great to see this come back again. I now realise why it was brought to an end. To do away with British identity and power from this countries rich and great history. The sooner it's reinstated the better

And their crew mates have to pick up the work they are unable to do when they are at Earls Court? Get a grip. Spend money on a show. Or spend on the NHS and public housing. even if the show is fantastic... as it was / is
I met Louis Mountbatten as a boy there and had sandwiches in the Royal Box as it was all closed down, Sad that this brave man was taken by utter cowards. Served here with the REME later. All knocked down now and just memories to be shared.
Poor Chap, the Major at 4m33sec, he’s rightly Choked Up. I remember going to this many times as a Child and then as young man, was invited into the WO & Sgts Mess due to having mates there. Got majorly pissed, staggered out in the late hours of following morning! Bloody ace night. Brilliant Show that would be great to have running again. 👍🏼
they should reinstate the royal tournament and i think it is needed now as much as ever all ex service men and woman should get together and start a campaign to get it reinstated anyone going to join in ?
I had the privilege to go to this event twice and was an experience i will never forget, such a shame they got rid of it, as mentioned below a short sighted decision.
This was a national disgrace when this was shut down !! The Queen should insist that this should continue !! Especially the Field Gun Crews !!! The Government should find this !! If they can find money for immigrants and Forgien aid !! Then why not this !!!
People speak of living in the past, but if you undo a wrong decision you are again in the future. The Royal Tournament should be reinstated as a commemoration of Brexit. I am not a royalist, traditionalist or even seriously patriotic, but the fact is the pomp and circumstance does give me joy and most of us enjoy it. Any pseudo Christians should concede that honour and glory are part of the Lord's prayer and stop being closet socialists. There is plenty of scriptural support for depicting bravery, skill, dedication, uplifting music, the list goes on. Your option is Marxism, a human being telling you what to do. Where did he get his wisdom? From himself. Be worried.
I wish they would bring the Royal Tournament back! I went every year for over 10 yrs and LOVED it, especially the Field Gun competition ( ex Pompey 'Jenny')

jFM58 I should have said, I did every Naval year from 1990, so yes we did have weeks of crap and roughing it, like 3 weeks. But, as I said, for the last one it was a PR exercise. And please don't tell me on the field gunners, as RM buglers we get on with them that only a Stoker would know :-)
This brings back very good memories for me I attended many of these tournaments at Earls Court in London. This nation had an immense pride back then and as an audience member you could really feel the pride of a nation. The membership of the EU killed this off now we have left the EU we need to bring this tournament back. It will help build the pride in this nation again!

I went many times. The first time was as a boy, my late uncle who was doing National Service was part of the support team at the time. Last time was for the final season, with my children.
I loved watching this as a child, especially the gun crews. Tragic though that this film is marred by so many racist and anti-European comments below. What is wrong with people? If something like this, that should be a joyous celebration of national identity, can engender such hatred, maybe it did have to be brought to an end.
Blair's government decided it didn't reflect the modern armed forces and binned it....I was part of this Tournament when we were told, couldn't believe our ears!!

As a serving Royal Marine Bugler on this, finally making Drum Major, this so army biased it's unbelievable. The Tournament died because it became a puppy show for retired officers and those serving that wanted honours. In my last year of serving I was Drum Major and the on Royal Military Tattoo, yep, it was 3 days at Earls Court under Parker trying to bring back the Tournament, I think it lasted 2 years. The lines will never be the same, and as a foot note, the horses were treated better than any serving person on this gig. It was 2 weeks of rehearsals, 3 weeks of living above horse shit and 2 performances a day, not including PR. It's not service people don't mind grafting, but this was prostituting us for their self gain. Ironic, we got 50p a performance and where made to line up and collect it at the end for something like £12.50, oh and we got a coin. Greedy men out for themselves
+historex54tamiya I went to Earls Court a few times, mainly to see the field gun. I never participated, but knew a lot of field gunners in all 3 commands. They were nothing but bursting with pride to be there and couldn't wait to be eligible again. The tournament was a fantastic exhibition, whether you had to rough it for a few weeks or not, part of service life. We all roughed it at some point, some a lot more than others too.
I was in the Royal Marines Drill Display Squad in 1966; the matelots, on the final night, got into the rafters and when we did our volleys to "Rule Brittania" let go a couple of chickens and toilet paper....being UA at the time, not allowed the "tot" etc the gun crews treated us young recruits very well. We were not allowed to wear civvies so the gun crews "lent" us civvie gear for a run ashore; you can just imagine the rigs we wore when "ashore"....laughable, to say the least. We were also, being recruits, permitted only "Cinderella" leave but the gun crews took care of us and sneaked us back inboard past they eyes of various MPs....ahhh them was the days

No they don't ... 1999 was the last ever Command Field Gun run...I was in it.....you can still see lesser versions of this spectacle, but either cadets running with much smaller equipment or no walls and chasms running around a car park at HMS Collingwood..
