I've had Naatu Naatu in my head for 4 days straight. I've resigned myself to the fact that this is my life now. Just walking around absent mindedly sing-mumbling "Naaaaaatu Naatu Naatu Naatu Naatu..." until my demise.

For the Naatu Naatu dance sequence, the directors made the actors do 17 takes and would check frame by frame if their leg work synced up. He then chose the 2nd take among them. This is told by the actors itself in an interview that's on RU-vid.

the 17 takes were for only one shot. Think about alll the scenes where the actors dance together for long periods of time in sync, in totals there could have been upwards of 300 takes for the entire sequence. also the 2nd take was a sarcastic remark by NTR which Rajamouli just accepted the joke and went with it.

The attire that Ram wears at the end of the movie is the historically accurate attire that the actual Alluri Sitarama Raju wore during his fight against the British. It is well documented in telugu states that he wore that during his freedom fight as there are many statues, artwork and photos that show him in that attire. As many telugu people know the significance of Alluri sitarama raju, seeing him wear the historically accurate attire is similar to seeing a Marvel Character wearing his comic accurate suit for the first time. The reasons for the criticisms of propaganda is because of the unfamiliarity of the freedom fighter in other indian states and thus seeing him in that attire will make people think that it's pandering to the right wing. As a telugu person, it's annoying that people are confusing the attire of the actual freedom fighter with the whole nationalist propaganda.

He and his team starts with "one liner" and brings out the best story out of it. 20 years down the line, he would be known as world's best epic story teller with greatest visuals and I'm very sure. Pardon the long comment, I just have to share my experience with this movie: I watched this movie with a friend of mine, and we went in pretty much completely blind. I’d heard about the movie through some word of mouth online, but I somehow never saw any clips nor heard anything about the plot, only that it was an Indian action movie and an absolute blast. And holy shit. I’ve never been through such an intense three hours before. Every half hour, we checked the run time (we were watching on Netflix) certain that we were more than halfway through, only to find we were only one hour in. I’ve grown up watching Bollywood movies! I’m used to long runtimes! But I’m also used to those runtimes being cushioned by long musical numbers and gratuitous slow burn romances. Not this one. This was the most jam-packed three hours I’ve watched. I’ve never seen a movie be so stuffed by pure plot and development. By the time we finished the movie, my friend and I looked at each other, completely speechless. We didn’t know how we felt about it. We didn’t know if we loved or hated it. We were just…drained in the best way possible. We started cracking jokes about feeling like we’d been through the trenches together, being irreversibly changed by the experience of watching this movie, and only able to describe it as “the movie of all time.” Now, with some time to actually think through all of it, I loved it. I would love to watch it again with someone who hasn’t seen it before, just to experience it for the first time again through someone else. I think Everything Everywhere All at Once was the last movie to make me feel so blown away, and before that, I can’t remember what movie had made me feel like that. I’m so incredibly thankful that I somehow dodged any and all previous glimpses of it and went it so blind. What a fucking ride.

Some details & historic background about the movie, its characters : *Alluri Sita Rama Raju* was born in the West-Godavari (a district of present Indian state *Andhra Pradesh* on the banks of river *Godavari* ), to Alluri Venkata Rama Raju & his wife Suryanarayanamma in a Telugu-Kshatriya (Raju) family. After his parents died when he was 12, He was raised by his uncle in *Bhimavaram* . Alongside his education, he also got trained in Horse-riding & Archery. He was a well-civilized man, who *felt that the real evil was happening in the forests, that the tribals are the ones really being suppressed & exploited the most by british* and went into forests (Paderu & other forest areas near *Visakhapatnam* , currently named after him as *Alluri Sitarama Raju District* ) and dedicated his whole life for helping them fight british, *although wasn't a tribal himself the tribals saw him as a Leader and followed him* . He is revered and remembered not just as a great revolutionary but also as a symbol of *unshakable Honesty & Commitment, Admirable Character* . The tribals used to evoke the image of the Hindu-deity *Rama* in Alluri as an honorary, which despite being a religious man he never asked for. Since he went into forests for helping tribals, Raju actually *used to wear Saffron clothing and used bow & arrows* (was also a *sharp shooter* ) which resembled Hindu-god *RAM* . It is believed as his approach to stand as a symbol of inspiration for tribals to join him in revolt. Some believe that Raju taking *Brahmacharya Sanyas* (divine way of life, without love or attachment to any woman) for the revolution was the reason for his Saffron attire. He didn't marry his love Sita, sacrificing his love & life for revolution, and Sita understood that and lived as an admirer of him till her death. After her death, Raju changed his name from *Alluri Rama Raju* to *Alluri Sita Rama Raju* . He used to do *guerilla raids* on British police stations *(after informing & challenging them that he's going to come & attack and stop him if they can)* and collect guns & weapons, using an army of armed tribals by training them. Although britishers knew where he lived for a long time, It's said that it cost around *4 million* even in those days, for the british to finally capture & execute him. He was of only 25-26 years old when he died. They killed Rama Raju *unethically while he's unarmed, performing a morning prayer* . The efforts of Alluri in waging an armed conflict, with an army of tribals, without any state powers, against one of the most powerful empires have been recognised by all. The British government themselves grudgingly acknowledged him as the most-powerful tactician of the Guerrilla warfare. *Komaram Bheem* , a tribal himself from *Gond tribes* of *Adilabad* (a district of the present Indian state *Telangana* ) He was an extremely strong man & intensely emotional nature, and is *rumoured to hunt a tiger* by himself. He used to wear muslim disguises during his revolt against *Nizam* . He died fighting the Nizam's of *Bhagyanagaram* (present day Hyderabad) after a traitor in his own army helped the enemies find him. In Telugu states ( *Andhra Pradesh, Telangana* ), most of these things are very well known in every household, maybe not much in other states. They were referred to as *Sri Ram* and *Bheemasen* of *Ramayanam* & *Mahabharatam* , respectively, by people (since long back before the movies even existed !!) from their Names and features *Rama Raju's* - Saffron Attire, was a Kshatriya (Raju), went to forests and made an army with tribals, not just fought evil but lived with unshakable Character & Virtues, his love was also a *Sita* and he remained true to her even after her death. *Komaram Bheem* - Physical strength, Wild attacking nature, Perseverance, and also because gonds believe that they are descendants of *Gatothkacha, son of Bheem from Mahabharatam* ) being similar and out of the level of reverence they've achieved from people. Both left their homes almost in the same period and then returned after some time and started their revolutions against British and Nizam in Andhra Pradesh & Telangana, respectively. After returning home, Rama Raju started wearing Saffron clothing till the day he died fighting for tribals (known as *Rampa Rebellion* , with the motto *Manade Rajyam* which translates to *Ours is this kingdom* against British in Visakhapatnam agency and some parts of both Godavari districts), and Bheem came back as an educated man and started his rebellion (with motto *Jal, Jangal, Jameen* with translates to *Water, Forest & Soil* ). Although there's no record that Raju & Bheem actually met, It's said that Bheem admired & took inspiration from Alluri Sita Rama Raju & his way of rebellion using a tribal army. As no one has a clear idea about what happened to them in that period when they left, and what made them become revolutionaries.. the movie writer wrote a Fictional tale of friendship between the two, that they met & became friends and Bheem was the one who gave Rama Raju a Saffron attire and that he got educated himself from Rama Raju, connecting everything that was remembered about them in telugu people hearts.. if we see carefully, we can see all these details used in some way, in the movie clearly.. Other details : -The Indian flag used throughout the movie was the older Berlin Committee Flag (designed by *Madame Bhikaji Cama, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar & Shyamji krishna Varma* ) corresponding to the time period. (Current Indian flag was designed by *Pingali Venkayya* ) - The bike used by Bheem was of the older world war versions, which were designed lightweight for men to lift and carry them when required. -Back in the 90s, even top actors were afraid to play the character of Rama Raju, as if not done properly, it could hurt people's feelings *(There are literally temples built by people out of reverence for Rama Raju !!)* . It was first made a movie by Actor Krishna (father of Mahesh babu : lead actor of SS Rajamouli's next movie). It became a Sensational Blockbuster breaking all the records and brought him a never-ending fame as the most daring actor in Telugu film industry. -Rama Raju is also revered by people as *Manyam Dhora* (King of the Wild Forests) & Komaram Bheem is praised as *Gondu Bebbuli* (Ferocious Tiger of Gond tribes). These names are also referred to in the Original movie ( *Telugu* or Tollywood version, available on Disney plus Hotstar & Zee5). It's dubbed into all industries of Indian Cinema. The one in Netflix is Hindi dubbed/ bollywood version. - India has a set of *Film industries* in it, corresponding to it's rich diversity in languages spoken within the single country (many National languages). and each of these film industries have some great movies (along with average ones and disasters) The name Bollywood which was earlier thought by some as the "Indian Film industry" (there's no such thing) is just the industry corresponding to language Hindi (most-spoken, around 47% of Indians). The movies.. *RRR, Baahubali 1 & 2* are from the Industry corresponding to language *Telugu* (TFI - Telugu Film Industry or Tollywood). There are more than 5 major Film industries within India. About language *Telugu* : 1. Referred as *Italian of the East,* as it's the only language in the Eastern world, which has every word ending in a vowel sound. 2. It's one of the *6 Classical languages of India* . (Others being Tamil, Sanskrit, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia) 3. It's the *15th* most spoken language in the world and *3rd* most spoken language wrt India (after Hindi, Bengali), and the largest of all *Dravidian* (South-Indian) languages. It's also the fastest-growing foreign language of USA 4. Lyrical composition of the famous *Karnatic music* (one of the two Indian Classical music) is done in Telugu. 1. Lord Ram is beyond right wing. 2. Alluri Sitaram Raju depiction in RRR is indeed inspired by Lord Ram. The attire, the BGM and the small sequences like arrow piercing the tree, Seetha mudrika exchange, the prison escape on shoulders of Bheem. 3. Rajmouli's vision is driven from Epic Ramayana and Mbh in this as well as previous ventures. He admits it and even explains it in great detail. Since North Indians too share the understanding of these epics, they correctly gauge the references wherever they made. 4. Lastly, Alluri Sitaram Raju himself was a devout Sanyasi Freedom fighter, who was known for preaching Bhagavad Gita while criss crossing through countryside. A small tribute to this fact is in RRR when Raju himself recites a shloka while doing pull-ups in prison cell.

How you felt after seeing RRR is how I felt seeing Baahubali in the theater, which I saw each part four times in the theater and over ten times each. They’re even better than RRR. They’re the whole reason I created my RU-vid channel reviewing Indian cinema - and I love discussing these films with my Indian viewers. (Pardesi means foreigner in Hindi). I had watched many Hindi films, but Baahubali was one of my first South Indian films. My love of Telugu films has even led to me reviewing classic Telugu films for a Telugu site, ABP Desam, where they subtitle me, after all these years of me reading subtitles. I’ve been swooning over NTR jr’s grandfather NTR in his films from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. I also love the experience of seeing Indian films with the audience and I try to go first day, first show. I love that that is such a thing in Indian cinema - FDFS for true fans. Loved this video and your co-writer gave you such great background information that gives great context for those new to Indian cinema. Highly, highly recommend you seek out other Rajamouli films like Baahubali 1 and 2, Maghadeera (stars Ram Charan), and especially Eega (The Fly).

Trying to see this movie in its Telugu version sent me down a rabbit hole where I learned about the complex dubbing scene in Indian cinema which is barely touched on here. There are three different selections for the Bahubaali films on Netflix because they're honestly different movies. For RRR, the Telugu version won't be on Netflix -- it was sold to a different service. We'll eventually get the Hindi, Tamil and English versions, which have completely different versions of Naatu Naatu! The good news is that I finally found a theater playing it and my life was changed. This is the best movie of 2022 and will be hard to top.
@beanbean8375

Hi! Just wanted to know what you mean by "different." From your description, I'm getting the impression that instead of a direct translation, the script is localized to Tamil, Hindi etc from Telugu. Is this correct? Or are there other factors involved?
@Dorgon
@Dorgon 2 года назад
@@beanbean8375 First off, the English language versions are much, much shorter. Other than that, the music is different with lyrics, instrumentation and singers often changing in the different dubs. The Hindi version of RRR is slightly longer because it adds screen time for a popular Hindi actor (that's what Google told me anyway). There may be other differences as well.

Hindi version of natu natu is exactly same in terms of singing, excitement and fun. Its called Nacho Nacho. The only word I can really sum up this film with is genuine. It has soul, it pops with color, it is unabashedly unashamed of what it is, and I fucking fell in love. I already want to watch it again! It's insane, and it's so incredibly epic!

“Indian cinema is not only about Bollywood” - this explanation was much needed, especially to the western world. Much appreciated.

Easily the best film industry in India. Also, the term "Mollywood" is not really used. its just refered to as "Malayalam film industry"

We have all types of film industries that deliver particular genres of films. Telugu- high budget mind blowing action & epics Tamil - moderate action & nice story in a moderate budget Kannada- mix of story & moderate action in a less budget. Malayalam- the best stories & very less action in very less budget People can prefer according to their tastes

I know you mentioned it in passing, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on Baahubali! It's one of my favorite movies. I'm very much looking forward to seeing RRR when I get the chance.

@@naveen_red Malayalam film is widely considered as teh best in India. This is not a recent phenomenon either. Bengali and Malayali films have featured at international festivals like Cannes and Venice more so than any other industry. You might like mass flicks like RRR or KGF but if you look at actual critical acclaim then Malayalam takes the cake and it's not even close. Most of the best technicians in Indian cinema (directors, editors, cinematographers etc) have always been Malayalis.
