RRR - The Best Movie You've Never Seen

The Critical Drinker

RRR, an Indian action movie directed by S. S. Rajamouli, was the kind of movie I didn't expect great things from. But as it turns out, it was a fantastically realised story of friendship, loyalty, betrayal, redemption and revolution. And it's better than 95% of the garbage being churned out over here.

One of my favorite scenes in the movie, which nobody has mentioned in any review, is when a random guy (not even a supporting character) trying to flee from the British soldiers with a little girl in his arms. He gets shot, and then the first thing he does is toss the girl to another guy who then runs away, while the first guy falls down and dies. I can't express how refreshing it was to see a portrayal of men signifying their ability to sacrifice their life for a little child. After getting sick and tired of Marvel, Disney, and Star wars movies where the little girl would probably build an iron man suit to escape that situation because 'we don't need no man', that scene really stuck with me.

I feel like audiences in India still see filmmaking as it was during it’s Golden Age, or more specifically treat it like a grand opera or theater play. The action, grand set pieces, musical numbers, and overall large scale of the film that mixes so many genres reminds me a lot of the movies that would be shown on 70mm panorama like Ben Hur, Sound Of Music, Singin’ in the rain, or West Side Story. RRR also happens to tell a story about brotherhood, friendship, love, and what it means to have all of that and protect it while also showcasing the love that the filmmakers have for their country, culture, religion, and history. Hell the film even ends with a grand music number that replaces the main ending credits that has the director, writer, and main stars dance behind a giant set with backup dancers and some of India’s biggest historic figures looming above. Which again goes back to the idea of this basically being an opera on screen with the last set piece serving as a final bow to us, the audience.

Raju is the perfect example of how to achieve successfully what the writers of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series wanted with Reva. His character works, because they show us his soft side when out of uniform, his motivations are well laid out and are greater than just personal vengeance. And crucially, even though he’s ruthless, he never actually kills a fellow Indian - this shows a strong moral code in place, which makes his redemption possible - and that is where Reva failed miserably.

I ship it! They're totally queer-coded and if they aren't in love then this is typical oppressive cis-het queerbaiting _I CANCEL UUUUUU."_ We're sick of it too. Two characters, no matter what the gender/sex/whatever, should be able to have real life close bonds and relationships without the mass audience drooling with lust and furiously writing smutty fanfiction to whack off to. It's the whole pervy voyeurism of Leftist free love mentality that says Kirk and Spock or Batman and Robin _have_ to be gay. "" where the bad guys are bad guys because they're bad guys"" My 2 cents: Britishers ruling India were bad, you may not know as it is never discussed and Indians don't usually talk about it. But what you saw in that movie is very close to the reality of colonialism in India and Africa. The colonialists considered the Indians and Africans as lesser Human beings, due to mostly the color bias that already existed , superiority complex. The scenes depicted in the movie the torture, the dealing with Indians as almost commodities like cattle is very accurate actually. for the British it was not a question of being a villain, their perspective has been completely different and while in 2022 you may call them villains and bad guys but certainly not if you were a Britisher during 1800's.

Not every movie should be true to life, but every good movie gives the viewer an emotional experience, and the more dilemmas of the kind most humans face a movie has, usually the better.

A quick note in defense of the English actors; in non-english speaking films the director will often have English actors speak slow enough for the local audience to understand the language as English, as opposed to English sounding gibberish. They will also direct them to give either wooden or over exaggerated performances to not confuse cultural mannerisms that may portray different meanings or emotions to the locals. It also serves to highlight the differences between local characters and foreign characters on a basic empathetic level with the viewers.
