These are the tools I used to finish this job - special and otherwise.
Thanks to AF1 for all the tools and parts they have provided. (No, they didnt pay me for the kudos).

The (apparent) lack of factory consistency regarding valve clearances worries me; a lot. If I were to buy a new RSV4 I'd want to get the valve clearances checked with zero miles on the clock. Thanks for all these "valve job" videos btw. Epic.

Good idea. I've seen some set to explode from the factory. I think it should have been spec'd at 10000KM's based on what I've seen.

Thanks for the RSV4 video series. I was going to have a look at my RSV4 myself soon. It looks like I need to buy yet another special tool. The cam sprocket holder is probably easier to buy than fab up.

Hey man, i have been following your videos lately. I wish you dont mind sharing the measurement of your DIY cam gear holding tool since most people complained the tool from AF1 wouldn't do job completely. My bike is a 2012R by the way

Thanks for making these videos, much appreciated. I have a 2016 RSV4RR with a new engine (the previous one dropped a valve after 50000km - long story). Anyway, I want to be on top of it this time and want to check the valves myself because I don't really trust the dealers to do this. My question (hope you can help) - what differences to the procedure on the 2016+ motor?
@ShaunNielsen
@ShaunNielsen 6 лет назад
Hi Marc. Dropped a valve after 50,000 K's? Thats pretty impressive, both for you and the motor. Thats a lot better than having it happen after 3000, as has happened to a few people. Good idea to do the work yourself. I've worked at too many dealerships where the techs didnt know how to do the work so just didnt bother (never go to a shop with MMI trained techs) Unfortunately I cant comment on the differences between my 2013 and a 2016+ motor as I've only ever worked on the older models. The best place to ask would be the AF1 RSV4 forum: www.apriliaforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?69-2010-2013-RSV4-Factory-and-RSV4-R

What did you use to pull the flywheel? We have the same type and thus the flywheel needs to come out. I have seen some various tricks on the internet, but not about to mess up my expensive engine. I also noted on the engine teardown vids you just pulled it free. Mine seems pretty well attached and just pulling with my hands will not remove it. Thanks, Jason
@ShaunNielsen
@ShaunNielsen 7 лет назад
Hi Jason, mine just dropped off when i undid the bolt. If it hadn't, before buying or making a specific puller for it I would have experimented by tapping it on all sides with a plastic mallet. If that doesnt work then its time to check the AF1 website for the proper tool.
@jasonwatts8588
@jasonwatts8588 7 лет назад
Thanks. I have seen mentioned that you can demagnatize the flywheel if you hit it. Is that why you said use a plastic mallet to remove that possibility?
@ShaunNielsen
@ShaunNielsen 7 лет назад
i hadnt heard that but i wouldnt hit a metal assembly with a hardened steel hammer unless damage was a good thing.

Hi Shaun, I will be doing my valves in a few weeks, What are the dimensions for the bolt you used to attach the timing wheel to the crankshaft? Would you recommend making this tool identically or do you have any recommendations for building an updated tool if you had any issues with this one. Thanks, Colton

Hey shaun. hope all is well. i think ive watched your Rsv4 videos a thousand times! Did you ever end up making the Cam gear holder tool? Im thinking of making mine own. is the Aprilia tool made of Aluminum or steel?
@ShaunNielsen
@ShaunNielsen 4 года назад
Hi Drew, I have my tool right here. I've scanned it and added dimensions. I'll post a link as soon as I find a place to upload them. I'll also draw them in fusion 360. The tool is steel, but I'm sure aluminium would work just fine.

Shaun, I’m out of spec on a few of mine and will be doing this shortly. currently I am trying to gather the tools I will need as well as reviewing a few different sources on how to actually do the job. Here are a few questions I have so far as far as what tools. 1) what brand/model MIC did you picture? you said you got it off of amazon, but which one? 2) Did you use the factory gear jammer from aprilia? your videos only talked about using the two pins to lock the crank and the cam, but other sources have talked about a motion pro gear jammer while others talk about the factory tool that jams up the primary gear. 3)I saw something saying the clutch needs to be pulled? did you have too? your video showed nothing about that. it actually looked like it was still in place when you did the work. 4) did you have to pull the flywheel? when you did the front bank, it looks like you didn't cover pulling the stator side in detail. what tools did you use for that? and can you give brief description? Thanks for any additional help you can give.
@ShaunNielsen
@ShaunNielsen 7 лет назад
Hi jason, I just posted a link to the new micrometer in the description. It works great in both metric and old style. The jammer isnt necessary if you're careful. Its intended for ham fisted apprentices rushing to get the job done The clutch doesn't need to come out. I pulled the flywheel only to install the degree wheel. It doesnt require a special tool, just a standard socket and it drops off.
@jsnonzzr
@jsnonzzr 7 лет назад
Shaun. Thanks. With some of my "impressive " mistakes, I wonder if I'm one of those ham fisted people you speak of. But knowing that I will be gentle where needed.
@ShaunNielsen

the best thing to do is go slow. dont do something until you know what effect it will have, and double check everything. its better to take longer to make sure its right than realise you've done something wrong and have to redo the job

Shaun, I have another question, What size is the cam locking pin? the broken screw driver... I dont have any broken screw drivers laying around. ( yes I have two accounts and am on a different computer.)
@ShaunNielsen
@ShaunNielsen 7 лет назад
The tool I made for the front bank used a 5mm bolt. the screwdriver i used on the rear was actually slightly larger and was a better fit - it was tapered slightly and worked much better.
@akshayd82

Did you use a gear lock on the cams while torquing the bolts?
@kevie88
@kevie88 5 лет назад
I have used a gear jammer to tighten, but the crank lock tools are amazing if you can get your hands on them.

Hi Shaun, Regarding the cam chain sprocket holder tool, is it a must or can the job be done without it? Thanks!
@ShaunNielsen
@ShaunNielsen 7 лет назад
Its a must. If you were to try to do the job without it and it failed, you would most likely have to pull the engine out to get the access needed to reinstall the cam chain

The manual calls to remove the stator and flywheel and to use a tool to lock something on that side in place.... or am I misreading it? In any case, I notice you didn't do that. Do you see any reason to?
@ShaunNielsen
@ShaunNielsen 7 лет назад
You're correct - the manual does specify a tool to lock the crank in place but after looking at the valve train I didn't think it was necessary. By being careful and not applying excess force I was able to remove the camshafts and complete the job just fine. The key with all mechanical work is to examine the parts you're working on and everything they are connected to until you understand how much force is necessary to do the work you need. Never apply more than that. If a bolt wont come undone, or a component wont seat properly, dont force it. Pull it apart and look at whats going on. By working this way you can avoid damaging other pieces and will never have to learn how to install a helicoil on something you broke!
@captncomplaint
@captncomplaint 7 лет назад
Totally get it... so basically you (and I agree) took the approach that locking it in place from the clutch side, using a pin to lock the cam gears in place, and being careful and deliberate was enough to prevent the front cylinder from moving out of time and as such, didn't need to remove the flywheel or "lock it in place" from that side. Am I understanding you correctly? I thought the same thing when looking at it -- my thinking being if that bolt is good enough to hold the crank in place on the clutch side for the rear cylinder, it should be good enough to keep the same crank in place for the front cylinder as well and so long as i wasn't cranking down on some bolt or something with extreme force, it wont force the crank past it. Thanks for the reply Shaun... appreciate it.

What are the sizes/dimensions of the homemade tools used? I purchased the cam gear holder from AF1 and would look to avoid buying those overpriced threaded shafts with knobs haha.

Hello Shaun. Also, is the bend in the cam holding tool helpful, or would it be better if it was flat? If nothing else, I may when I decide to adjust my valves Measure the hole lengths at the attachment points, and make the tool based off of that. Or just shell out the money, still undecided.
@ShaunNielsen
@ShaunNielsen 6 лет назад
Hi Armin, I have a scan of the tool I can send you, along with dimensions. In case you didnt know, its totally flat but the mount for the cam sprocket is a circular piece at right angles to the flat surface. If you contact me on facebook I can send you the drawing/scan and dimensions.

@ShaunNielsen 6 лет назад
Hi Murph, I dont have the tool with me here, its in a storage unit. I'm pretty sure its a 6mm bolt. If you look at the AF1 store they have them there, and if all else fails, try asking on the AFI RSV4 forum. Or if you can wait until this weekend I can go get the tool and measure it for you. Email me to remind me - shaunn@cardosystems.com

It’s a 6MM pin.Im making my own bits bar the cam gear holding tool. I’d rather learn about my bike than pay a dealer that may or may not do the job. Thanks for the videos Shaun.
