I've genuinely learned so much from watching your series as a relative layperson when it comes to the intricacies of the engine. Very informative and I'd say you are a very effective communicator at explaining what's going on. Don't think I'd have the full confidence to attempt the valve clearances and adjustments myself but interesting to know what's involved. Thank you for your time and effort to upload the series.

Hi Shaun. Nothing more than a hi...glad to see youve still got yours. Still got mine, works great but getting mothballed for the winter now. Having said that it gets taken out once every 6 weeks or so just to turn the engine over...but no real regular use...got some maintenance to do and some parts that need coating.
Took my rsv4 to the shop and I guess all my gaskets were bad and it was allowing coolant to get into the engine. My valves weren’t bent like they thought they were so I got lucky but they dropped the engine out of the frame to re time it. Rear bank had zero clearance on exhaust valves bike has 15k miles
Shaun Nielsen a 2016 Tuono 1100 would you recommend following the factory specs for checking the valves?The spec is 12000 miles.Its a road bike that rarely ever sees redline.
The Muscle Biker If your rear cylinder head exhaust valves have 0 clearance than I would suggest you have them pull the rear head before that engine grenades. 0 clearances on the exhaust valves indicate a worn valve seat usually due to excessively worn valve guides.
I did my 2013 bike at 6,000 road miles and 9 out of 16 were out of spec. Going to do them again this year at a little over 7,000 but all track days so see how they are. But I had intake cam wear on mine. If you look online there are a lot of Tuono’s with same wear. Only on the intake cams. Amauri said though on the engines he’s seen after finding the wear he didn’t seem to notice it increase much the next valve check. I ordered new intake cams to be safe. I hear it was a production error with the outsourced company and they had some bad batches go through. Just to give you a heads up! It’s an amazing bike though!
Hi Adam, I noticed a tiny amount of wear on the lobes of my cams too - and I change the oil every 200 miles. Luckily I'm seeing used parts prices are getting lower.
I'm actually researching before buying a RSV4 (never done this for past bikes, just pulled trigger and dealt with problems when they arise) but watching your vids make me feel like I can do this in the event I purchase one used and not new. I own corvettes (specifically the Ls7) z06 and they have valve guide and tolerance issues as well. So buying the rsv4 seems like a match made in heaven lol. Your videos are very easy to follow and listen to so I Subscribed!! Btw....how many miles on that motor now?
This motor hasn't been run since the video was shot - so it still has 7,000 miles - all on the track. This was the 4th valve clearance check, and the valves needed to be adjusted every time.
@@ShaunNielsen Thats crazy lol i think spirited street riding would yield longer times between NEW shims, but should still check them every 3500 miles or so? that would prob only be once a year for me. I think the most i ever rode on the street, when i didnt have a car to drive as well was about 5,000mi Fingers crossed, im still purchasing one, for some reason they really appeal to me. While I have you, are there any years/models in the 09-current rsv4 to stay away from?
@@johncolvin2234 I've heard from a Piaggio employee (via a friend whose RSV4 exploded) that all models before 2014 have the wrong valve springs (which is the cause of a lot of broken valves and detonated engines). If you get a 2014+ you should be fine.
Shaun Nielsen good to know, I'm shooting for a 17 + just to get the gauge cluster lol. But a loaded leftover sounds about par for the coarse come feb/March of 2020
Great video man. What year is this RSV4? I'm looking at buying a 17 RSV4RR with 8k miles. I know the valve clearance check is due it 12,000 mi. Should I it all be concerned with the valves on this bike at 8000 mi? I've had several R1s and they're always within spec usually at the first interval, but I know nothing about these Italian bikes.
This is a 2013. This year model had a known problem with the valves. The '17 model fixed this. Still, you should check them ASAP, Italian bikes are not like Japanese, they need much more maintenance.
Hiya Shaun hopefully you get this, I currently in the process of checking clearances. I need confirmation of cam lobe position. Far as I’m aware the lobe needs to be at 12 o’clock. Is this relative to the engine or the bike whilst on stands ? Leon.
Notice in this picture - the lobe is pointing in the same direction as the valve stem. The round section of the cam is the smallest radius, and that is where the clearance is measured. I could make the tool, but the stock tool from AF1 requires very little modification to work fine. I would recommend buying the tool and just grinding off the edge that causes the problem.
deolock _ As long as the circular part of the lobe is facing the bucket the exact angle is irrelevant. If the point of the lobe is up, almost 30 degrees from center - on either side - will still work fine.
Hi, I have a question. What should be the oil pressure at low revs on a warm engine? The service book does not provide such information. From what I read on the aprillia forum, the minimum is 2 bars. What do you think about it ? We are talking of course about RSV4 Factory 09-14 '.
The feeler gauges are made by Craftsman - Sears (who just declared bankruptcy). They are sometimes referred to as go-nogo gauges. Once you get used to them they make it a lot quicker to do the checks,
Service history. Dont buy a bike without one. These engines were very poorly made before 2014, so make sure you see the results of the last valve clearance check before buying.
