Really should be discussing the 'Valve Clearance' Shrinking or increasing (Not Shim Shrinking) due to factors like Valve seat wear, carbon build up on the Valve seat or wear on the Camshaft lobe etc. Yes if the Valve Clearance tightens (Reduces) then a thinner shim will be required to bring the tolerance back into spec.... Likewise if the Valve Clearance increases then a thicker shim will be required. Sometimes the size stamped/etched on the existing shim gets worn off and the only way to measure the exact thickness is with a micrometer. Once you know the thickness of the shim removed and the how much the measured Valve Clearance is out of tolerance by, it's simply a case of calculation or indeed looking at the chart as supplied in most workshop manuals applicable to the engine you're working on. Hope that helps.

I asked a motorcycle mechanic to check my valve clearances and he’s like “I usually tell people not to bother, it’s not as important as people say” so I told him I want him to do it anyways. Long story short he had my bike for almost 3 months and I drove to his house early in the morning and took it back

@yungmayanprinceymp6113 get a owners manuel and do the maintenance intervals. If your a novice rider, trail rider then double motor maintenance interval times-piston, valve checks, barrings. If you race then stick to intervals. Always change oil and clean air filters on time
@MrAlkanet-nt9ic
@MrAlkanet-nt9ic 16 дней назад
@@yungmayanprinceymp6113 yep, it usually doesnt need adjustment if everything sounds and works as it should... also it depends on engine design, probably not the same in engines that rev at 10000 compared with those that hardly ever go over 4000 and so on... that said, it is hard to notice gradual change in engines i just had an idea to record my engine sound now when it's new-ish, so i could compare it once i hit valve changing interval... i'll do that in the morning...

the shims dont shrink or enlarge or even deform at all. its the valves wearing out the valve seats that changes the distance the valve sits into the seat and in turn changing the duration the valve is open.

Any way I learn how to do the valves on these and 4 cylinder sports bikes if you have even a little bit of mechanical know how it is very easy. I refuse to pay a mechanic to do it sure, it’s a little tedious when you got to do all the measurements on the valves and shims, but it’s a love for the hobby of riding 🏍️

When clearances start going out of spec, is it just a matter of time and only so many adjustments can be done before you have to replace the valves and/or other parts? Are there any preventative measures to help avoid valves going out of spec or slow down the frequency of needed adjustments? Is it just change your oil and coolant on time and that’s it? And if it’s already happened once that valve(s) out of spec, best to shorten service interval? Once a valve goes out in one direction, will it continue to go out of spec in that direction until it’s no longer possible to shim? Thanks for your videos.

I think it’s just wear over time. If the gap is shrinking from the valves setting in the head more that’s wear. Same if the valve stem mushrooms and the gap is growing. I've been reading up on this all winter, in preparation of doing my first scheduled valve job on my 83 cb1000 (my uncle was the previous owner, and didn't ride it much at all - its only just now at the 10k mark, and showing signs of needing adjustment). the main thing holding me back from doing the job at this point is the availability of the shims, because I don't know what sizes I will need until I start the job, and once I know, I will have to order any shim sizes that I don't already have. But I want to know - because checking valve lash and changing shims could potentially drag out the job because of shipping time, why not just order brand spankin' new valves and solve all the problems in one fell swoop?
@motov8-garage832
@motov8-garage832 2 года назад
I'm currently about to roughly the same thing. I have a 05 kawasaki ninja 636, I'm a bit late on doing my first valve clearance check (26,000 miles). I'm not riding the bike anymore till I get all this process done..and it's a bit over welming lol. After my research I had about the same questions about shims and where and how to get them, you don't know what you need till you have the top end half way tore down. I seen online they have shim kits with multiple different sizes included, I'm planning on just ordering one of those kits("HotCams")about 63$, also a micrometer, a set of bent feeler gauges, and a new valve cover gasket. Then I should be good, I'm still going to be researching and reading for weeks more lol, that just my ocd. But as far as you saying just get new valves, that would mean taking off the entire head and a trip to a machine shop, more time, parts and money. The shims are cheap and most sport bikes use the same size shims and design for many years so there abundant and common, even other small engines use the same shims(I'm talking circumference not thickness) The hotcams kit should cover anything you might need and then you can even order them individually if needed.
@walterandrews3077
@walterandrews3077 Год назад
New valves probably won’t give you the proper clearance. If you really want to do it yourself, get a shim kit. Probably cheaper than a new set of valves, or paying a shop to do it. Also get a micrometer and learn how to use it.

moe green that's funny because you could check and gauge your shins and if there anything then the original thickness and they've shrunk and I've seen this happen so you're wrong

Peter Deimler you are incorrect the shim does not shrink I am a mechanic the valve and the valve seat is what wears

Checking valve clearance is the correct space needed in order for your oil to lubricate the metal components if the clearance is off your bikes motor will ocer heat and become stuck better known as a vlown engine

Valve stems will also stretch, getting longer, which will cause shim clearance to tighten (shrink), the exhaust valves are more effected than intake, exhaust valves will stretch more throughout their lifespan, this stretching of the stem will happen early in valves life, pretty quickly. Intake valves tend to beat harder on their valve seats because intakes are larger diameter and thus heavier. I use Titanium on the intake & stainless steel exhaust valves also will install copper based valve seats, the exhaust will use copper based however will have different alloy combo. Remember metals are malleable.

My experience confirms what you said. I am doing the first valve clearance adjustment on my Kawasaki Ninja 500 after 22750 miles (I am supposed to do it every 7400 miles). The intake valves are all in spec, but all four of the exhaust valves have a clearance that is too small. The spark plugs look OK, but there appeared to be carbon deposits in the well around the spark plugs. The engine starts and runs OK even in freezing weather, but the left side of the exhaust system gets hotter than the right side.

@@ninjarider2941 from your experience the valve stem stretches ??? Lol oookay there bud. It's the valve recessing into the valve seat as the seat wears

If its exhaust our mileage will be low??

It appears to be a bent valve.I will pull it down soon as I have recovered from an injury.
