They just HAD to do a Podcast on the Second Day. Gavin warned them, but did they listen? No. ... No one's made that joke yet, right?

Sometimes I get frustrated watching these videos because some things that Gavin says really makes sense and has a thought process behind them but they just turn it into a way to make fun of him. I mean sure sometimes it's just straight up funny but sometimes he actually says things that's really interesting to discuss.

When Gavin started talking about humans having more than five senses, he was actually correct. Most humans have on average between 22 and 24 senses. The two he mentioned, temperature and "knowing where you are in relation to your nose" are real senses. The latter is called your kinesthetic sense. It deals with knowing where your body parts are in relation to your center of mass without having to see them or even feel them. It would be what gives us what we call "muscle memory," and allows us to accurately move our body and respond to external stimuli BEFORE our brain is able to translate the information it's receiving into a form that we can use to make premeditated decisions. Musicians and martial artists in particular have a very strong kinesthetic sense. Another of our other senses is knowing which way is up. That little air bubble inside our ears is the actual sensor that gives us this ability, and vertigo is the phenomenon we experience when that sense fails. We also have senses that detect when we are hungry or when we need to go to the bathroom. There are sort of pressure detectors in our stomach and bladder that sense these things. Scientifically, anything that we can do that is informed by a physical "sensor" inside our bodies is a sense. We might actually have more than 22-24 of them. Some scientists believe we may have more than 30, but they have yet to identify the particular body parts that would act as sensors for such things. Long story short, Gavin is 100% right. He's just doing that thing where he fails to communicate it properly.

Okay... these are the ones that I know about: touch -temperature -pressure -pain -position (joints) sight -distance -speed -color -depth hearing -speed (Doppler effect) -direction smell taste -chemical identity other physical -balance -fatigue (awareness of) mental -humor (pleasant surprise) -fear (unpleasant surprise) -unbased conjecture (intuition) -spatial reasoning Gavin is right...believe it or not lol

Gavin is right about the senses. Sensing hot and cold, sensing up and down, sensing if you're sick or healthy, sensing how fast you're moving, etc all get lumped together as the sense of touch but they're technically all distinct.

Gavin is a smart man, he just isn't the most articulate.

Gavin is right. According to an article on HowStuffWorks.com: "The standard list of five senses doesn't really give our bodies credit for all of the amazing things they can do. There are at least a dozen different things we can sense."

I thought this was interesting. Temperature is an actual sense separate from any other. Gavin was right in that regard, and spatial awareness is actually Kinesthetic sense. Pain is a sense, and there is a sense for balance and acceleration.

Gavin wasnt completely wrong, he was just incorrect about the numbers. there is also equilibrioception sence of balance, movement and accleration, Thermoception the sence of temperature, Proprioception is the sence that allows the spacial awareness of where your body parts in relation to each other and Nociception the sence of pain

That list of hardest thing to do in sports is pretty crap (like most lists)... And hitting a baseball isn't that hard if you can practice against someone of that speed. The pitcher for my *high school* was pitching 85 MPH and we still lost plenty of games... If you swing enough times, anyone can get a hit. Normal people train for and do marathons all the time. At least a half dozen on the swim/dive team did them... At least go with the Iron Man Triathlon... 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, *then* a full marathon... Now that's brutal. Even pole vaulting is just a matter of technique. You can teach it to high schoolers. And nothing from martial arts? Most people literally couldn't react in time to how fast the guys in the UFC are, and certainly couldn't take the hit and keep going. Same goes for regular boxing or kick boxing or any fighting sport. Nothing from diving either? People are usually scared as all hell to even jump from the 3 meter let alone 5, 7.5, or 10 meters. And, they aren't going to throw any flips or twists. They aren't going be doing hand stands on the ledge because most people can't even do a hand stand let alone have the balls to do one at the edge of a 10 meter platform.

Technically Gavin has a point, humans have between 9 and 21 senses. Not just 5, i.e. balance, hunger, thirst etc. Thanks QI.

Regarding the senses thing, I'm pretty sure it's just a difference of classification between North America and Europe. It seems like Europeans list every sense as a primary sense where North America has 5 primary senses and then lists a bunch of secondary ones under that. For example: in North America, pain, temperature, contact, etc. are all listed as secondary senses under the primary sense of touch/feeling. Long story short, I don't think either side of the argument is wrong. Regardless, it seems like a pointless thing to get butthurt over..

Gavin is right about the 30 senses. I saw an anime called Kamen no Maid Guy where the main character had 37 senses, so it must be true. The japanese have never lied to me.

Your orientation is actually from your ears. There is a liquid in your ears that helps you with balance and determining your orientation. If you spin around, the dizziness is from the liquid sloshing around. In fact, the reason you get dizzy and stumble when you're drunk is that the liquid in your ears becomes less dense as you drink more, and it will slosh around much more

John is definitely the one who handled himself best on the green screen. Pretty much everyone else has been a bit cringy. I'm not saying it's the person on the green screens fault necessarily, but John handled the situations really well and had interesting stuff to say. Put him on the podcast sometime!

Yeah, Gavin was right about the Senses thing. There are about 14-20 depending on how they're counted. The "knowing where your nose is" one is called proprioception. Another important one is sense of timing. That one works with others. For example, if it works with hearing, it helps you know where a sound came from because it measures the split second between sound hitting one ear and the other in order to pinpoint it. That's important.

When talking about the what the Romans had to eat/drink. Completely right with saying wine twice. Romans drank wine as often as much we drink water now.

The senses argument though... I guess you could classify all of them as just one sense, touch. Your eyes absorb and feel the light, your tongue feels food, bits of your nose feel particles, fibers in your ear feel the vibrations of sound. Its all one sense in that way, so if you classify it down to touch taste etc, there is no reason you cant categorize it down like gavin does. Neither is wrong, its just preference or how you want to look at it.
