Tv gold,Glenroe followed by Don Cockburn reading the late evening news and up for school in the morning! We didn't know we were living. God bless and r.i.p. man.
From a time when news readers were professional. Thanks Don . How times have changed. Now we get opinions from "journalists" . We were better served then.
I left ireland in 1988, it was raining. I've returned various times since then but it's always been raining except one time I flew into Dublin and it was sunny. I rented a car and headed to Galway. As I got near Mullingar it started raining and continued for a week. I'm hoping global warming can sort this out!😁
Totally different weather. Global warming. Climate change. Orange snow. Yellow wind. Acid rain Don't make unnecessary journeys. Don't go swim in the sea Don't burn smokey turf. Don't buy Russian oil All changing the weather
Yep Don Coburn (if I spelt his name rightly?) and Charles Mitchell. I remember their newsreels well. I also remember when Don retired in the late 80s or early 90s I think? I remember he said he always used to cycle into RTE studios to clear his head.
Good question. At the time, Aer Lingus was the only Irish airline operating flights between Dublin and London -- and the government owned 85% of the company. It was a cash cow, a cosy little monopoly while it lasted.
Don Cockburn and Charles Mitchel. Memories of Dublin winters, getting egg and chips for tea, the fire on and the RTE News on a 14 inch television. A great clip of Charles here and an example of what a gentleman he was: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dFHOB866kDc.html
While the summer of 1985 was not a good one, weather wise, it was still a lot better than the crap summers we get nowadays, tgat pass as summers, like everything else, we have everything today but weve nothing, back then, we had nithing, but we had everything, meaning, we had no fancy lifestyle, no big houses, nor money, but we had better hearts, better memories as life was simpler. Don was a legend. Look how short the daily programme was on tv, so that meant with only 2 channels back then, no netflix crap, we got out more, less obesity too. We had problems in Ireland back then, but if i had a time i had a time machine, i wouldn't be staying in 2024 or going into 2024. I'd be going back to 1984 or 1985. Life today is absolute shit compared to back then. Golden Age of Music was the 1980’s, we had better values and better summer weather, but that wouldn't be hard, would it, and im only 48!!
headdlines suggested anything but pleasent times, truth is this country has come on leaps and bounds from those dark times, .sure we all have happy memories of childhood and youth but a deeper analysis shows a dreary conservative country. We have made great strides
Does anyone out there know the name of the font RTÉ News used for its logo at the time? It was also used elsewhere on TV in the early 1980s, like the chart rundown numbers on Top of the Pops and the mechanical clock shown before ITV programmes for Schools and Colleges. Anyone who can name the elusive font is a legend.
Could it in fact be July 10, 1986? I tried to find the name of the man shot at the building site. According to the CAIN Web Service, a twenty-year-old man, Brian Leonard, died on July 12, 1986, two days after being shot by the PAF at a building site in Snugville St, Belfast. The New York Times also records that Geoffrey Howe planned a diplomatic visit to South Africa in July 1986. www.nytimes.com/1986/07/08/world/british-diplomat-postpones-visit-to-south-africa.html
I still don't understand the ways to pronounce of some English surnames (Villiers sounding "Villers", St. John -> "Sinjin", Mainwaring -> "Mannering") & even among Irish surnames?! How come Cockburn sounds "Coburn" (James Coburn???)? Are there any other Irish surnames in such similar difficulties?
Then the news was about the news Nowadays it is about the news reader The older format had a lot of merit. The reader sat down and read the news Now... Standing awkwardly around and of course the need for 2 readers. I step out and the other steps in
The leaving of a white impression having a link to any atomatic science just kicked the bucket... I choose this piece of... Footage to indicate my complete and utter lack of empathy with the so called techos and phone creators... The music industry the advisers and the on air personal... Should I wish to take Lsd or detach myself from reality I would do so.. But I have as you can see... Not
