Jefferson once said that husbandmen were "God's chosen people." He also wished to see America as a predominantly agricultural nation. Yet he was, as Col. Holowchak notes, a politician in preference to a planter, and when he did turn his attention to farming, he was not successful. Yet he often noted that the success of republicanism was dependent on the political engagement of a virtuous citizenry in the system and husbandry, he often said, was virtue-enhancing.
