Jefferson once said that husbandmen were "God's chosen people." He also wished to see America as a predominantly agricultural nation. Yet he was, as Col. Holowchak notes, a politician in preference to a planter, and when he did turn his attention to farming, he was not successful. Yet he often noted that the success of republicanism was dependent on the political engagement of a virtuous citizenry in the system and husbandry, he often said, was virtue-enhancing. In this video, Teacher Donna and Col. Holowchak discuss Jefferson's thoughts on husbandry.

He tended to be socially clumsy, but tended to treat all people with respect, even if they were undeserving.
