In the 1970s, there emerged a new depiction of Jefferson's political thinking: Classical Republicanism. Proponents of that view said that Jefferson was not so much a Lockean liberal--one who thought that the bedrock of a sound political system was the individual--but a Classical, Ciceronean Republican--one who maintained that the political system, not the individual, was philosophically foundational. The best political system occurs when individuals subordinate their own interests for the good of the whole. Was Jefferson a Classical Republican or a Lockean Liberal? Col. Holowchak here maintains that both interpretations are wrong.
