You spent a long time with these laptops, and I know you haven't made a review, but I have a couple of questions. Is there a Mux Switch and/or Advanced Optimus? And, I know it's not nvidia Gsync, but does the display have any sort of adaptive refresh rates or did you experience screen tearing while testing? That's all. I can be really hard to find this info.

@@RezaAghapour XMG OASIS is an optional add-on to XMG NEO 15. The presence of the curvy-shaped water pipe inside the laptop does not affect the air cooling in any way. The water pipe sits on top of the traditional heat pipes of the air cooling system. The z-height of XMG NEO 15 is large enough to provide enough space for both air and liquid cooling. Compared to last year’s model, the number and diameter of the air cooling heat pipes have remained constant. Not at the moment because I don't have any 3070 laptops that also have a 12th gen CPU. Well I guess I did have the MSI Crosshair 15 but the GPU power limit is lower and it has DDR4 memory and different cooling so it's not a fair comparison. It would really depend if XMG are able to send the same chassis so I could do it fairly.
@@JarrodsTech I think most of us are looking in that comparisson based on the likes on his comment. Hard to get a laptop with 12th gen and rtx 3070, those 12th gen would rather be equiped with 3070ti. Regardless we just want to see the difference of 11th gen with 3070 vs 12th gen with 3070ti. Bought x17 r1 and returned to buy the x17 r2 with the new cpu and gpu but after watching the review I bought the same laptop that I returned because Im only using it for gaming and the gap is not worth the money. My newer x 17 r1 came with windows 11 though which I heard is much slower than windows 10. Anyways really love your channel it's a big help.
I love the easy to follow and straightforward analysis you provide. Not only do you give us a large amount of sample data to compare, but you also explain the tests very well to understand why we see these specific results. As a gaming laptop fan, you really helped me fine the best value per dollar laptop. I never truly understood why people said the highest end GPU's aren't worth it until I started watching your videos. I ended up getting an MSI GE76 with an i7-11th gen, 16 gigs of RAM, RTX 3060, with 1TB SSD on sale at costco. There were higher end gaming laptops available but doing the math this was the best value. Thanks for the great videos, just because I found my ideal laptop doesn't mean ill stop watching your videos. SUBBED!
Being coupled with the Oasis, the only perfect solution to prefer the 3080 Ti would have been: being able to unlock additional TGP for the card, like 200W, when paired with liquid cooling. Pity VBIOS is locked. Unless.. (looks at Nvidia compromised servers and all code theft) One can only hope...
@@AdityaGupta-om8ez bruh you out of your mind? the desktop RTX 3080 Ti has a tgp of 350 watts! But yes I understand what you are trying to say. At the best 215 watts or so and another 25 with dynamic boost for the mobile RTX 3080 Ti.

When we purchase a laptop we’re getting the whole cpu+gpu package anyways so it would make more sense to compare last years model to this years model so we can see if it’s worth buying the newer models. -From a customer’s perspective

What I don't see is anyone talking about futureproofing. in 3-5 years, double the GDDR6 ram is likely to make much more of a difference once game publishers start demanding more. For guys like me who buy a top-end laptop to last 6 or 7 years, that extra $500 for doubling down ram and adding 23% CUDA cores may play out as a bigger difference in the coming years. Simply talking about today's AAA games is short sighted...
Seems like the liquid-cooled 3070ti is about in the same range as the current regular 3080. But with almost all of these 3070ti laptops so far being over $2000 USD, it seems more practical to just get something with a regular 3080 like the Legion 7.
I think that a different wattage comparison will be so interesting, to see if it's interesting the change of gpu for laptops with limited tgp (80W, 105W...)
It would be nice if we could lower the GPU power limit that far, but it doesn't allow it. Different machines would need to be used, but then you're introducing other factors like different CPU power limit / cooling etc
Any chance you could re-run the test capped at 80 watts for both GPUs? It would be very interesting to see how the 2 pieces of silicon do on a level playing field in terms of power limits.
I always appreciate your videos, but I'd have loved to see some content creation benchmark comparisons as well. I think that's where there's likely to be a bigger difference between the two.
Honestly, I couldn't be bothered after doing 2 laptops at 2 resolutions on both water and air. We used a LOT of time making this and the Adobe tests take ages
Would love to see a quick mention of average clockspeed in a game or two. Also 1 or 2 tests of them both at the 150w power limit. It's suprising to me though, as the 3080ti has more cores and thusly should be more efficient, but at 12% higher power, and only 7% higher framerate, it actually is a regression in perf/watt even. This may all be attributed to the 16gb of VRAM then.
Personally, I don't find any value in the clock speeds that are actually being hit in games so I never include them. But all the data is sItting on my NAS if you want anything in particular. There are plenty more tests we could have done like different power levels and different resolutions like 4K but at the end of the day this testing already took two weeks and is a big loss based on how much I spent to have it done compared to what the video will return so you can only include so much and still be practical.
@@JarrodsTech I'm not sure what your NAS is. But since discovering your channel back in the fall I've wondered if there's a master excel sheet with all the laptops and their performance metrics you've recorded for public viewing. As a numbers and charts guy, I'm very intrigued at the idea of it all
While I 100% with you here, I think what 3080Ti would be at most beneficial is in content creation. A lot of creative software would require an ample amount of memory size & cuda cores in order to reach a smoother, painless production (or editing, if it's video). In the end, it's about how would you manage your expectation in your purchase decision. I personally aimed for the top-tier GPU because I know my day always consists of 90% content creation & 10% gaming. It's the other way around when I do most of my time for gaming. If you've managed to set your expectation & understand what your average use case would be, you will never feel like what you purchase is a waste of money/a horrible value.
Agree, however, as a primarily gaming focused channel, I decided not to spend time doing the super long and slow Adobe benchmarks as we already spent two weeks to test two laptops at two resolutions on both air and water cooling in these games, it's just not possible to do it all in a practical manner. To be blunt, this video might make a few hundred dollars life time, but I paid way more to have the testing done so from a business perspective it's a big loss.
Walk a mile in my shoes, who have to sit and develop on a Microsoft Cloud computer, with builds that can take up to an hour and debugging is so slow that you can waste a day on a simple problem. Installed locally, which is not always really possible, it takes no time at all. Those Puget benchmarks are absolutely nothing but first world problems.

Originally planned to do 4k, but already took 2 weeks of time to do two laptops at two resolutions on both air and water, just takes too long to do it all. Not to mention the screens in these models max out at 1440p
@@JarrodsTech I know it is hard to answer but without any money issue which one do you suggest? Lenovo legion 7i - Xmg Neo 17 - MSI GE76 Raider? (Gaming- engineering software usage) and all of them is highest Intel and NVIDIA 3080ti. Performance, look, customer service, durability, quality material and component etc.
@@birdost12345 that's a tough one all are great. Don't think I've used neo 17 for a bit but last time I didn't like it as much as 15 chassis. Maybe Lenovo but it has the RGB battery drain issue, compromise is MSI larger

I do believe that the reason for people to spend a lot more on a 3080 ti would have to do with the 16gb GDDR6x that comes with it, seeing as it is possible for 3D-animators & video editors to utilize those VRAMs.
The difference really comes down to using AI related tasks rather than for gaming tasks. Gaming seems minimal. I have a Lenovo Legion 7i with an RTX 3080 Ti specifically because of the video memory.
I actually bought the Asus Scar 17 with the 3070Ti after Micro center listed on sale for $2299 it was literally $1200 cheaper than the 3080Ti … I’m so happy that I went for the 3070Ti …. 10% performance difference is not worth paying that much for it
Remember that it is not so easy to replace the CPU/GPU of laptops as desktops. You have to anticipate what your needs will be for the period your purchase intends to cover. Going cheap may seem like an option now, but in a year or two, such a purchase will seem like a bad idea. I have an Eluktronics MAG15 with a 2070 Max Q. It seemed like a great idea at the time two years ago. Now I can't wait for my Eluktronics Prometheus XVII with 3080Ti and LPP water cooling.

It would have been nice to have the vanilla 3070 and 3080 stats as well, but I appreciate the trouble of getting a similar laptop to compare with. However, I cannot help but to chuckle a bit at a water cooled laptop. Doesn't it kind of negate the purpose of being mobile? I can see the point of the added VRAM, since some titles are already struggling at 6GB and are unplayable with 4GB, especially if you want to go 4K.
Tested on hardware unboxed. Mostly, 10% performance boost on both 45w and 35w models. Pretty disappointing, I'd say. One good point is energy efficiency. That was 6900HS tested on 35w(by default), 45w and 70w

Great comparison Jarrod. Yes, 3080Ti is not worth it at all. I believe i mentioned this a few months back. I still think the 3070 and 3080 from last year are the value options
To be fair and looking at very recent AAA games only at native screen resolution, its around 10% more performance for 33% more money. These chips would certainly benefit from having 200W+ or even 300W+ TDP like their desktop counterpart. We just have to figure out liquid nitrogen cooling for laptops :)
You know we had 200w GPU's back in 2020, right? That too with air cooling. So a 230w GPU with air cooling in these laptops is certainly possible. And really, if you put in the fastest 24gbps gddr6 vram, well, these laptops would be much faster. With a 230w TDP, you can probably put in a proper desktop rtx 3080 10gb and 12gb as well and they'd not be that much slower.
@@siyzerix yeah but 200W gpus are things for a form factor that isn't popular anymore. Also nobody wants stuff that's constantly thermal throttling, things like the 4090 mobile is already hot and loud enough
@@sm4sh3d Those 200w rtx 2080 super laptops were already 3.5kg to 4kg and didn't cross 80 degrees. That too with 2020 levels of cooling, upon which we've massively improved. We already have 18' 4kg gaming laptops with pathetic 175w rtx 4090's that are simply power throttled rtx 4080's. Why not put in an actual desktop rtx 4090 into laptops with atleast a 230w TDP. And before you say that GPU is too big, we've put in a literal rtx 6000 desktop gpu with 24gb vram and more cuda cores than 2080ti in to the asus studio pro art in 2020 with a 200w tdp and just 3kg weight. So we can very well put in proper desktop 4090 with its massive 24gb vram buffer and still retain most of its performance. And such a GPU will also beat a desktop 4080
Gold standard for comparision and value buying. Mate I don't care if you create a video just displaying the results and then drop a link to another video with the entire detailed test results I would still watch it 😉🤣 Keep up the good work brother.

Video Suggestion (would love to see): You should compare these GPUs (even throw in a 3060) at different locked power levels with every other spec being similar. This way we can compare the different laptop configurations on GPU TGPs available in market and maybe get a sweet spot with price to performance for each GPU. As not all GPUs scale similarly with increasing power limits.
Well, I went for an MSI Stealth GS77 with RTX 3080 Ti while I was in Israel and since everything is cheaper down south in Eilat _(and_ it was Black Friday) then I basically skipped that 32% price difference, woo! Thanks as always for your topnotch content 🙌
A lot of people specially CS students these days use their machines to train Machine learning/Deep learning models. Given the current situation with GPU prices and availability sometimes laptops are the only option to go. I think it would be really helpful for some folks if you also incorporated machine learning/AI model training performance comparison as in these cases GPU is utilized heavily. Love your content!

As someone that tests a lot of different resolutions on different panels, maybe you can help me with this question: In general, how do games look on a 1440p laptop panel when played at 1080p resolutions? I'm trying to decide what resolution panel to look for in a new laptop and I'm concerned that games played at a lower resolution than the panel will look muddy and washed out. What are your thoughts about this?
Playing at interpolated resolutions never looks great. It lacks sharpness and clarity. These days with NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR, using AI Upscaling is probably the better choice. // Tom
What gets me is on paper the 3080 Ti should be a decent bump up. But honest it’s barely more powerful than a last years 3080 laptop that you’re better off buying one of those at a steep discount. Or atleast the 3070 Ti like you show here if you want or need the newer processor.
Yes! TLOS, RE4 and HL chugs 8GB vram like a peanut! Look at the recent review of Hardware Unbkxed for 3070 and 6800xt. 3070 stutters like hell on those games for not having enough vram. While 6800xt with double the vram performs very well.
@@chriscute69 I had a Hp omen with 3070ti which I had to take back because the fans kept going out and a restart would fix it. But one thing I noticed was stutters at really high graphics in games. I didn’t know what caused it until I got the omen with 3080ti and found the stutters were gone. Well now I know it was the lack of vram.

Well, with the newest games like TLOU, RE4, HWL etc this doesn't age well. The 8GB vram buffer of 3070ti at 1440p is not enough. Look at the recent HUB review for 3070 and 6800xt. Like damn 3070 stutters like hell for its 8GB buffer. This 3080ti laptop is more likely to perform like a desktop 3070 with double the VRAM.
Do you know of any RU-vidr reviewers who speak on these topics? I don't and probably won't get into VR for a long time it it'd be interesting to find out
@@HanmaHeiro I watched a few of the MRTV reviews where he used an XMG Laptop with a Quest 2 and Reverb G2. Also based on what i have monitored on my Q2/G2/8KX headsets where video RAM can get chewed up pretty quickly in VR
Okay there is no point doing the liquid cooling. How can you call it a "fair comparison" when you eliminate a crucial element of how these will perform for a majority of people. Thermals should absolutely be accounted for and it's stupid to skip over that ESPECIALLY in these thin laptops.
I have the i-9 12900h w/ Nividia 3080 and 32 Gb of Ram and I’m constantly getting 90-95 degrees celsius just casually gaming. I cant tell if this is due to my games not having any lock in place to control gpu and cpu usage or if its the laptop itself. Performance is amazing just super hot!
Does the 3080TI make any sense for content creators with a heavy video editing workflow? I have the Legion 5 Pro 5800H with 3070 and 64gb of ram at the moment. (purchased mainly on your reviews of the legion 5 pro and legion 7.. thank you by the way). I'm able to edit pretty easily on the Legion right now but have built a 12900K desktop with 3070 TI and it's pretty awesome. I had wanted to get the 16gb Legion 7 but could not justify the additional expense at the time. Again, with gaming not the core use case, it the 3070 still the better option or is the 3080 class, given the work-related component, worth it. Thanks Rick
Any idea what the (roughly/average) percentage increase there is in performance between 3070 to TI to 3080 to TI? Is it relatively small gains at each step?
3080 has some more shaders, higher power limit, extra vram. If you ever consider going above a 3070, just get the 3080, dont pay for a cut down chip like 3070ti
@@niebuhr6197 That's probably the best solution but for some reason, neither xmg or dell are making new laptops with the 3080 right now, it's either the 3070 ti or the 3080 ti (which is too expensive for me). And MSI is going for the 3080 8gb instead of the 16 ones. So either the 3070 ti is better than the 3080 or they want us to spend more and get the 3080 ti

Very informative and enjoyable video as normal! You are my guy hands down! However I find some themes in this video misleading. Since the basic point you are making is that both processors can play 2021 AAA games very well at 1080p. But we all know this. The issue though is what will be the difference between the cards when running 2023 and 2024 AAA titles? I suggest the FPS difference would be much higher. So in this since it may be better to go with a simple 3070 since it also plays 2021 and 2022 AAA titles quite well at 1080p. When buying a new gaming laptop though the goal should be to purchase a gaming laptop that can play AAA games arriving in the next 24 months at 1080p and even 1440p max settings. The 3080ti will do this. The 3070ti will not. All i am saying is would more look forward to playing starfield, diablo 4, company of heroes, God of War Ragnorok, the next Assasins creed title and the last of us at 1440p on a rtx 3080ti than a rtx3070ti!
The new rog duo 16 claims to have the “ROG Nebula HDR Display” but only in the 3080ti models. Do you know anything about that and would it be worth it in that setup? I think it is a $1000 difference but the money isn’t really my main concern. More is the technology really up to what they claim it to be 🤷♂️ Also the cpu version available atm is the 6900. Will it be worth waiting for 6980 and obviously paying more for that as well 🤦♂️ (is there a noticeable difference, or do you require special gadgets to actually tell the difference?)
Hey Jarrod, I'm tossing up between two g15's and was wondering if you could please steer me in the right direction. My options appear to both be the 2022 models with liquid metal - one is a 6800hs with a 3080 for $3400 and the other is 6900hs with a 3070ti for $3750 - which would you choose?
What are your thoughts on the Lenovo legion 7 slim with the 3060 max q and the ryzen 7 5800h? I noticed you didn't review it but do you have any thoughts on it? I'm Comparing it too the msi delta and the Asus rog 14 both 2021 versions. I like the slimmer gaming laptops thats why I'm looking at these. Main reason I like the slim 7 is because of the build quality and that its the only one with a mux switch. But I noticed that it gets hot about 100c with the cpu. At max performance
As the price for anything increases, you get diminishing returns though it's surprising to see that a 3080Ti laptop which costs almost 2x more than a 3070Ti laptop in my country only yields 10 more frames per second. Those 10 extra frames don't really mean much since it can't cross 120 fps. If 3080Ti could guarantee at least 120 fps in most games, then it would be a good GPU. The only advantage I can think of is the bigger VRAM, but that's mostly beneficial for video editors.
