In this video we will be taking a direct comparison look at the RX 6850 VS the RTX 3080. Both XG Mobile GPU's were run on the ASUS ROG Ally. Using the ROG Ally's proprietary port to unleash even more graphical power.
Games tested include Hogwarts, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Starfield and many more.

I was watching Russ's video from Retro Game Corp channel and he was getting consistently better performance on the rx6850 than on the 3080. I think he also mentioned that he wrote Asus and they sent him a patch of drivers. Maybe that made a difference. Are you still having troubles connecting with the Rx6850 on the Ally? Or was that fixed in the last months? I was thinking of pulling the trigger and buying it. Thanks👍 and great work 👏

Tengo la ROG Ally y también tengo los 2 modelos de Xg Mobile 3080 que venía con mi ROG Flow y compré la Xg rt6850 para comparar en la Ally, no me dio el tiempo ya que quiero quedarme solo con una!, en tu opinión con cual debería quedarme?, 6850 o la 3080, sabiendo que las AMD son conocidas por tener buena vejez!, pero su fsr3 es compatible con sus gráficas y las de nvidia!. Hey! Which model of 3080 do you have? If it isn't the 16gb one get rid of it. If it is the 16gb 3080 vs 12gb 6850. I would say the 3080 is worth it over the 6850. Seeing as you have both of them already. If you were to purchase just one, I would recommend the 6850 unless you can find the 3080 within 100 dollars of the 6850. Also, remember that FSR 3 frame gen will work on the RTX 3080 as well, just not DLSS 3 frame gen. So you would be missing out on the better quality frame generation, but you would get a nice jump in performance with Ray Traced games. The 6850m just tanks in RT. As well, I have had more issues (as well as many others) with the AMD card vs the nvidia card. But your mileage may vary. Hope this helps!

Thanks for making this video. It's kinda funny that the earlier released 3080 is better overall than the 6850M that came out last year. I currently have the XGM 6850M and I love it for the most part. I didn't really a choice when I made this purchase as it was the only option out there that made any kind of sense. The 3080 was missing some things but in all honestly if they were the same price I would go green all day. It was either $600 for the 6850M or $1,200 or so for the 3080. I just didn't think it was worth it just to have a little more performance but also RT capable. The 6850M was good enough for me even tho I overall perfer Team Green. My X16 2022 has a 3060 and my custom rig has a 4090 FE. Nvidia just makes solid cards even though they're overpriced compared to AMD. That being said I had an opportunity to buy an XGM 4090 recently but I passed on it as I feel like it's not worth the $2K asking price even if I sold my XGM 6850M. I might still get it in the future but only when the price goes down on it as I'm not in a rush to get it.

I think the 4090s are a myth lol. They've all been delisted on Canadian stores. I would say that now with the price coming down on the 3080 it does make it more compelling, if not for the extra vram and the benefits of DLSS. The only thing I loathe about the 3080 is that it's limited to HDMI 2.0 Other than that it's perfect for me. It will be replacing my wife's desktop essentially.

I appreciate that so much! I'm sorry it was so long. I honestly went into it thinking it would be 20-25 mins max. Thank God I didn't do any more testing than I did. However the structure should be 1st, performance as tested 2nd cpu bottleneck and wattage testing at 20w when installed with Adrenaline panel. This may or may not turn into a 2nd/3rd video(s). Final video will be a condensed version of the previous videos with final conclusions and how it has been living with the xg's and using them as my only GPU for 2-3 months at this point.

I got the 3080 and run cod mw3 at about 180-200 fps average on balanced resolution. Not bad on a 2k 27in monitor

You should be able to get higher depending on settings. I'll be honest I haven't played it in a while but I don't think there have been any updates that would have changed performance though.

That will be the next part of the video! I will be testing in some heavy cpu bound games and then some heavy GPU bound games. There won't be as many tests but in key titles such as starfield, Jedi Survivor, cyberpunk and a few others. Then for GPU bound games we will have things like gears 5 which can really hammer the GPU hard as well as higher resolution testing (1440p & 4k)

Yeah I'm retooling my final video for it to A) not be as long and B) hopefully be a comprehensive final review of the two. There are a few things causing issues. Such as drivers and 20w giving the same or more perf as 30w at times. I have most of the data done now, I just need to condense it and then form a script.

It should be able to regardless seeing as it's 7xxxx based. However it will not be useful in a majority of cases. Save for playing older gamers and boosting from 60 to 120

man im getting that 6850 bug where the turbo mode runs worse than the perfomance mode, what do you think is causing this? And do you think i should try to switch it out for the 3080? Im kind of hoping asus would release their 2024 xgmobile soon so the other drop in price

@@KyriCunninghamHi, After looking from many source. User 6850 said that you need to set manual TDP to 20watt. Never use TDP more than 20watt. On this case, 20 watt will Equivalent with 30watt result. Hopefully the answer helps

If you had to choose between a rtx 3070ti vs the 6850m on an alienware m17 r5 which would you choose? I have had amd before and the drivers were annoying, but the 8gb of vram on the 3070ti concern me a bit because a lot of games are starting to have issues with just 8gb of video memory. But then again, with amd id be giving up ray tracing and dlss and its just... A tough decision for me lol What's swaying me towards amd is mainly that 12gb vram capacity, because the 3080ti versions of this laptop are like 400 dollars more on ebay refurbished unfortunately

Tough call. I'd say 8gb is the bare minimum going forward however a big reason as to why I kept the 3080 xg mobile vs the 6850 was the additional VRAM (12vs16) I would say it all depends on your use case. The rtx class cards obviously having access to DLSS but you get access to fsr and frame gen on both. I kept the 3080 over the 6850 because it is mainly hooked up to a 4k tv. Therefore the added VRAM was a big help. If you are playing 1440p/1080p 8gb should be enough for the time being but I would ultimately move to get more VRAM Both cards are about as performance to each other iirc (3070ti laptop vs 6850 laptop) with the 6850 pulling out ahead slightly. When comparing ray tracing though, obviously the rtx wins in that regard. Edit: I'm very much the same with my ray tracing and DLSS. I will gush over it with the rest of them. However, the 3070ti (laptop) I would not expect great things with ray tracing. It is capable, don't get me wrong. But it is about the equivalent to 10% less than the 3060ti Desktop. To me, at that class of card, ray tracing is a nice to have if it works but often it's better without.

@@WinDeckTech thank you for the detailed answer. I saw a benchmark of the full 150w 3070ti mobile (same I'd be getting) and it was only like 5 fps behind of the desktop 3070. So at least seems better than the desktop 3060ti haha. As for the 6850m it seems to literally be a 6700xt put inside a laptop, so I guess both will be ok for a 360hz 1080p screen, I guess the answer to my question depends on how long I wanna keep the laptop for. If I plan to upgrade in the near future the 3070ti seems the obvious choice since it's got better features.. but what you're saying is true, that 8gb of vram won't be lasting too long. Thanks for the reply! You've given me a fee things to think about

No problem at all! For what it's worth, unless I was getting the bleeding edge rtx card (4080/90) I would be more worried about the cpu mated to it. I'd highly suggest amd if you can. Only if you value battery life and will be using the laptop away from the wall at times. Otherwise it's not that big of a deal.

@@WinDeckTech yeah! that is also i was considering as well, the two laptops on my budget range right now are one with a i9 11980hk and a 3080 16gb, the other one has a ryzen 9 6900hx and a rtx 3070ti or a rx 6850m xt. In terms of the laptops themselves they are the highest end possible for their gen, the alienware x17 r1 or msi GE76 for the intel system vs the alienware m17 r5 for the ryzen system, all got max tdp parts, so it's just a matter of making a choice since they all cost about the same ($100 price difference for the intel systems) on ebay and hardware swap.

Without having played the games much, I would say the 3080 would likely be your best bet. IF you can find it at a reasonable price. I'd say within 100-150 of the 6850

Set your VRAM to auto for the Ally and then it will dedicate all 16gb of ram in the ally as system memory. Otherwise you'll hobble performance Edit: also no dumb questions!

I might have missed it so apologies but did you do any testing with emulation? Curious on if there was any increase in performance or at the very least if you can change the upscaling but get similar performance

Not in this one. The only way that would help out would be like you said with upscaling. Thank you for reminding me though. I will add that in with the second part, testing TOTK on the ally w/ and w/o the xg mobile then on the x16 flow with a 13900h processor. It should make for an interesting comparison cpu wise.

I have been beyond struggling to find the sweet spot for cyberpunk on the 6850 and I’m very green when it comes to pc gaming. What would you say is the best experience for cyberpunk with the 6850? I’m trying to make sense of the incredible amount of data in your video, but my brain just don’t work like that 😂 Regardless, very informative and helpful video. Very nice video. Thx, a lot. I don't have Ally but I have x13 with 6850m XT XGM. No hassle met as in your video but I am also above average casual user. DDU for drivers updates, CPU undervolting etc. Interestingly, I also met similar issues with the frame pacing with XGM and overall GPU underutilization. In your video, I can clearly see that often GPU can be under 100w which can indicate a lot of issues with other fields. I don't have most of the games you have tested, but I have one that can replicate interesting behaviour. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider (1440p, TAA, DX12, high) my CPU will sit at around 30-40 watts and XGM will be somewhere at 120 watts which suggests CPU limitation. But when I DISABLE CPU boost my XGM will utilize almost fully and deliver a nice 110+ FPS in the benchmark instead of 80-90 with the BOOST. All of this with the CPU somewhere at 8-15 watts. Some parts are still not GPU bound but overall I can see a nice fps increase when logically I shouldn't. Why is it like this and whom to blame is a mystery? ASUS, Windows or AMD? Maybe all of them. I am looking forward to your x16 testing.

Try chanting your cpu to 20w. If you have the adrenaline software it seems to be bugging out at 30w vs 20w. I'll be making a video on it

Is disabling CPU boost helping with CPU bottlenecks in most games? Also how are you disabling CPU boost? I have an x13 and cg 3080 and I am experiencing severe CPU bottlenecks in The Finals and am looking for a way to maneuver this.

@TheDamnedScientist check out g helper. I typically leave cpu boost on because when using an e gpu you’ll want your cpu to “act like a normal cpu” only time I personally recommend turning cpu boost off is for battery savings (laptop light word processing video etc) or if you are playing handhelds and are locking to a specific FPS. G Helper is a god send for laptops and you will increase your battery life just by using it. It’s free on GitHub allows for TDP fan and OC control

Hi . I am using the RTX3080 xg mobile . On god of war the GPU usuage is like 26% . Never going to 99%.... but on your video i can see your xg mobile is always using your GPU around 99 % and higher MHZ . WHY ? 😅😅😅

Try using DDU (display driver uninstaller) as well, ensure you have your VRAM set to auto in ACSE. Ensure you are running 20w+ on the Ally. If using DLSS that will typically cause power and usage to go down. Let me know if any of those help! Sorry for the long response time!!

I just got a XG Mobile RX6850 and I'm having that strange bug...Performance mode works and performs muuuch better than Turbo or any other Manual tdp mode. Even Quiet mode performs better than Turbo and any other manual TDP. Do you have a suggestion what I should try? I mean... I'm really happy about how it performs in Performance and Quiet modes (I'm also really surprised it works so well in quiet mode as the XG-mobile also gets significantly quieter) but I find it strange as you also mentioned in you video that giving it more power results in less performance. Anyway... I'm very grateful at any tipp you can give me🙏

I would use ddu (display driver uninstaller) to clean your GPU drivers with the xg plugged in. Then install the Asus GPU drivers, not the AMD provided ones. Performance shouldn't be significantly worse in turbo vs perf. But there's no need to go above 30w. In manual mode I do max fan at 70 degrees. Otherwise in cpu bound games you can see better perf in 20w

@@WinDeckTech I saw on the XG mobile support site there is an old Amd VGA driver. Is there a difference between VGA and the normal gpu drivers? Or is all the same?

Am just here to confirm i went with the xg mobile rx6850m xt for the rog ally because of the hdmi 2.1 since i want it to be connected to my tv on the living room. And is january 2024 and is working with no problem they probably fix it with updates🎉
