Ruang Volcano Eruption Update; New Major Eruption Occurs, Largest on Record

One of the most powerful volcanic eruptions on the planet of the current decade occurred earlier today, sending a plume of ash to a height of 82,000 feet. Pyroclastic flows swept across large sectors of the Ruang volcano, and widespread ash and lapilli was deposited in sections of Indonesia. At least several hundred homes were destroyed or damaged by my own estimate via an eruption which was larger than Ruang's April 17th eruption.

Note: By “largest on record” I mean today’s eruption was the largest known from specifically only the Ruang volcano.

I honestly was a bit surprised when the tremor rapidly shot past what was observed in the hours before the plinian eruption on April 17th. That is when I knew that it was probably going to erupt, hence my earlier community post about Ruang. Ash from the eruption has now begun falling on parts of northern Sulawesi.

Thanks for all the work you put in those videos, it's a magnificent wealth of information! Is it me or is there a very striking similarity between Ruang and Vesuvius in terms of eruptive behavior? This seems to be following the same trend as Vesuvius ' 1779, 1794 and 1822 eruptions.... Small scale eruption at the summit, then escalation into very large explosive events in a few hours... About the lava dome at the summit of Ruang, I don't know the composition and viscosity of the lava but, based on the fountaining behavior it seems to be rather fluid for an andesite composition, something resembling the 1906 and 1944 Vesuvius' lava flows, which were of the scoria block type (thick aa).

@@rngnv4551 That's a good comparison. People just presumed he was rounding people up, but he just gestured them to get out the way because he had to get to a toilet. He made it. Moral: The collective IQ of a crowd drops by N where N is the number of people in said crowd.

Geology Hub's warnings to people on the islands to be vigilant of tsunamis is highlighted by the fact that Japanese media are today reporting that te Japan Meteorological Agency are monitoring for any tsunamis caused by this eruption hitting the coastline of Japan. Japan is obviously thousands of kilometres away and if it is serious enough for Japan to be monitoring, those on the affected islands should be taking it a thousand times more seriously. Not only Japan of course, but I would imagine that other countries in the Pacific are also being vigilant. To most people here, this is preaching to the converted, but I write this message in the hope that someone looking for information comes across this video, watches it and sees comments like my own and heed the warnings.

WOW. Ruang just goes to show how the most dangerous volcanoes are the ones you don't expect, nobody would have thought that that random island would be capable of such intense activity just a year ago. I can't imagine that anyone will be living on Ruang island anytime soon after this. I'm really curious what the chance of a flank collapse, seawater intrusion, or caldera collapse is with this volcano, those slopes look very precarious and the eruption size combined with the ring of islands feels suspicious.

There’s talk (in this comments section) about this being a potential lead up to a Krakatoa-like event, but this seems to have more in common with the 91 eruption of Pinatubo (so far). That said, there’s now a question as to whether the entire series of islands actually forms the caldera for a much larger single volcano. And Indonesia’s Volcano’s really are next-level terrifying - inside a century, they had the VEI 7 1815 Tambora eruption and the VEI 6 1883 Krakatoa eruption.

Remember guys Krakatoa had at least 3 major booms each greater than the last until the whole island vaporised. Ruang is repeating history. Also to note the increased moisture vapor blown into the mesosphere (upper) was estimated at an increase of + 15% with smaller S02 amount but also launched into mesosphere by Tonga eruption of 2022 stuff we know cooled Oceania by --05 C and increased rainfall till current days. Add this stratospheric penetration with 2022 Shiveluch 71000 foot eruption and a distinct picture starts to emerge of our upper atmosphere not getting back to normal. These effects aren't going away and with our magnetospheric pole excursion impacting increased solar radiation overall well volcanic surprises will continue. History has shown us this behavior is cyclical and is a repeat of 42k and 12k years ago. But well done to GeologyHub you really are doing great work.

Keep in mind that the Tonga eruption ended up warming the Earth instead long-term because of all the water vapor put into the atmosphere. The SO2 emissions from that eruption were actually far smaller than expected, hence why it was initially rated as only VEI 4.

Krakatoa had several months of large explosive eruptions leading up to August 27, 1883. The 4 explosions that day were far beyond any of the previous explosions. The loudest was measured at 180 decibels 100 miles away. It is estimated that right at Krakatoa, the sound was 312 decibels.
@marksherry6589
@marksherry6589 Месяц назад
@TheWigglergler I must disagree with you firmly here. The people claiming warming were the same people that claimed 2023 was 3 or 4th hottest year in125,000 years. Paid IPCC or UN with their funding on the line. NOAA did disclose not just Oceania over the last decadel period of a --.05C drop but so to most of the other regions of the Southern Hemisphere have had reduced decadel temperatures. Interestingly I have the satellite feed showing by 29/04/22 the grey coloured cloud that had circumvented around the globe by the said date. Interesting that on 01/05/2022 all internet footage had been totally removed. Why would they do this?Even lay people know that increased blanket cloud cover reflects sunlight thereby reducing global heat. We are talking about volcanic dust and vapor being injected into our highest levels ie: 158000ft in under 30mins. When the satellite was flying over the explosion the cloud rose so fast even the lens had moisture droplets appear on it in real time. So @TheWigglergler you just want the narrative to repeat go ahead but why don't you look for yourself you will be very surprised.

The Eruption is pretty much right on the Equator however the eruption is probably not gonna alter the climate, or if it does it would be minimal The 1991 eruption of Mt Pinatubo caused a cooling of 0.5c or 0.9f, however that eruption ejected ~13 km^3 of tephra and 12 million tons of Sulfur Ruang's eruption is still ongoing, but so far it is at least 13 times smaller than Pinatubo's 1991 eruption

Has this happened before in recent times? A volcano producing two VEI 4 eruptions one after the other like this? Could the whole event be considered a VEI 5 then if the amount of tephra is sufficient?
@Atlasworkinprogress
@Atlasworkinprogress Месяц назад
I would say that this whole episode is 1 long eruption, so the amount of tephra release pre-Plinian 1, during Plinian 1, between Plinian 1 and Plinian 2, and after Plinian 2 must all be taken into account.
@JarnoOverwijk
@JarnoOverwijk Месяц назад
It would still be the same eruption according to Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program. It states an eruption is over when 90 days have passed since the last eruptive event. Considering the last eruptive event prior to this wasn't even two weeks ago, it'd therefore be one and the same. As for VEI, that'd indeed be increased if the eruption as a whole produces sufficient volumes of tephra.
@simonlemerveilleuxdelisle3779
@simonlemerveilleuxdelisle3779 Месяц назад
With the two major events happening in two weeks, its probably a VEI5 eruption now.

@olm8829 Месяц назад
@@simonlemerveilleuxdelisle3779if the first plinian phase ejected approximately 0.4 cubic kilometres of tephra, and the second plinian phase seems to be even more violent, then yeah, it can already be a low-end VEI-5

When I was looking up Icelandic volcanism the ~939 Eldgjá eruption Katla's bigger counterpart to the Laki fissure eruption from Grimsvotn apparently seems to have involved up to 16 different Plinian eruptive columns along its extent which were potentially cotemporaneous. For context this eruption was basically the consequence of Mid Ocean Ridge extension, basically what is occurring along the Reykjanes peninsula, but with the active spreading fissure happening to be the fault lineament where the Katla stratovolcano's primary magma chamber resides leading to the rapid discharge of much of Katla's siliceous magma chamber. The Laki eruption was much the same but for the Grimsvotn volcano though I don't know how extensive its explosive content was I think Katla is generally more silica rich than Grimsvotn is but don't quote me on that. These eruptions were primarily effusive in the sense that most of the material erupted was basaltic but both were highly explosive with eruption columns reaching in to the stratosphere which is why their impacts were so severe. These are tiny compared to flood basalts and notably even those appear to have had some nasty explosive content as the Siletzia terrain contains a number of samples of subaerial lapilli from the oceanic flood basalt thankfully one of these occurred in geologically recent times but I digress. In another context I can't help but think back to the video a week or two ago on Taal's eruptive history finding there were a series of young closely spaced explosive caldera forming events a total of 4 within the last ~6000 years. This seems to suggest to me that Ruang might be one of these erratic temporally closely space explosive eruption producing volcanoes.
@treck87
@treck87 Месяц назад
I was correct then. After the eruption on the 17th stopped abruptly, after being so violent, it sounded very similar to the description of the way Krakatoa went before the big one. Those Indonesian volcanoes put on a show.

While unlikely yeah if this system produces an major explosive caldera forming eruption it would be very bad indeed, especially if as suggested by the tremor after the 1st eruption that there are ring faults meaning all 3 islands are part of a single large caldera complex rim.

Is the eruption a VEI 4-5?
@Atlasworkinprogress
@Atlasworkinprogress Месяц назад
Borderline. The first Plinian Column was .4 cubic kilometers. This one is undoubtedly bigger, but by how much is not known. You also need to add up all the smaller explosions and tephra ejected before the first big event and this one, as well as the explosions before and after the first big event. Right now this is 2 VEI4 level blasts but that could still land in the VEI4 category. We also honestly do not know what the future will bring at this volcano. If the eruptive sequence continues and another large blast happens, it will undoubtedly breech the VEI-5 mark.

Impressive. I was just checking this volcano yesterday, wondering if magma supply was slowing down to dome and if it was just gonna slowly go back to sleep... Guess it's still got plenty of Andesite or maybe a smidgen of dacite left to enlarge island. A big few or partial collapse could join the two islands. Really spectacular eruption and I'm confident the people there are safe.

@michaeldeierhoi4096
@michaeldeierhoi4096 Месяц назад
The biggest potential effect is if enough SO2 is injected into the upper atmosphere that it could cause a minor cooling for about a year because SO2 acts like an aerosol which can reflect sunlight back into space. There is no guarantee that will happen.
