What is really amazing is that this same type of rock called columnar basalt which has been used around the world for ancient construction of massive buildings above and below sea level.
That is what I was told 40 or 50 years ago , the soft outer layers of the volcano eroded away & the lava rock interior is what remained , for us to see , eons later !!!
Could you have not taken FIVE MINUTES to look up the pronunciations here? Christchurch - one word, no stress, dropped 't'. Dunedin - "Done Edin". These aren't even Maori names ffs. I do at least appreciate you're not using generated synthetic speech.
You would think the people who live in such an area would be well aware of the possibility of this happening. They already knew there was a pyroclastic flow, And when it started raining that heavily they should have known that there was going to be a very big problem very soon.
That whole area still receives a thoroughfare of meteor finds that still occurs to this day with Cranbourne area receiving constant recorded hits to this day.
Be sure to check out the Explore West Sumatra channel, who granted me permission to use their drone footage in this video! Channel link: www.youtube.com/@ExploreWestSumatra

Sympathy to those who have lost relatives in this tragedy. I heard about this this AM and was waiting for this explanation. Again you've brought the human element into science. Thanks.
My Grandpa was a ranger at Craters for years. My parents would send me to spend a week with him each summer, so I got to experience many areas and caves not open to the public.
I love picture rocks! That is exceptionally cool that you found it, given your volcanoe coverage here. A favorite of mine is a jasper colored I found by a QuickStop, which has what looks like a white ghost holding flowers! 👻💐
