Ruang Volcano Eruption Update; Prepare for Unusual Atmospheric Phenomena

Only 50 hours ago, the second largest explosive volcanic eruption in the last 40 years occurred, devastating an inhabited island. This all occurred at the Ruang volcano in Indonesia, and due to the sheer amount of sulfur dioxide it ejected, people have asked if it will cause a volcanic winter. I will discuss if this eruption has the potential to cool the climate, and discuss the spectacular sunsets its aerosols might create.

Why do you ask about the southern hemisphere specifically? Wouldn't the northern hemisphere also have the same chances for pretty sunsets?
@riverAmazonNZ
@riverAmazonNZ 27 дней назад
@@tada777777 because of the way the atmosphere circulates, stuff tends to stay mostly in one hemisphere at first, and only slowly mixes in with the rest over time. So the strongest effects would be seen in the southern hemisphere in this instance.

This is the quickest way to see that atmospheric changes do alter climate. There is a population of polar bears in Hudson Bay who biologists refer to as 'Pinatubo Bears'. Their mothers had a good winter the year after that eruption and so had plenty of milk leading to 1 generation that had enough nutrition in infancy
@CricketsBay

As someone with a keen interest in geology and meteorology, witnessing the aftermath of the Ruang volcano eruption in Indonesia is both fascinating and concerning. Living in Terengganu, Malaysia, I've been observing the changes in our atmosphere, including the striking orange tint of the moon. It's a stark reminder of the interconnectedness of our planet's natural systems and how events like volcanic eruptions can have profound effects on weather patterns and atmospheric phenomena. The potential for a volcanic winter and the creation of stunning sunsets through aerosols only adds to the intrigue and complexity of Earth's dynamic processes.

Weirdly colored sunsets may appear in the Northern Hemisphere too. Hunga Tonga, 20 deg S, caused weird sunsets in Seattle, 48 deg N. These were seen in Sept 2022, 8 months after Hunga Tonga's big eruption. Mt Ruang is 2 deg N, so the time delay might be shorter. Your data tables indicate that SO2 from Ruang already exceeds the SO2 from Hunga Tonga. Thanks for the well-done report.

Great Reporting! I check your channel daily! While the Chemistry of SO2 and SO3 emissions are important, what is the approximate CO2 and water vapor emissions calculated from this series of eruptions? How are they calculated? Are estimates derived from remote sensing, local downwind monitoring or a combination of both? What data resources do you use, NOAA ( NCEI / NGDC) or something else? Can you create a short video, illustrating the chemical and physical differences / history of Plinian eruptions with quieter more ubiquitous forms of vulcanism? My guess, we focus upon the spectacular at the expense of the ordinary? - an analysis on the data would be interesting, especially long-term effects on climate.

Depending which way the predominant winds blow, the airborne particulate matter from this eruption will heavily influence weather on the region/s most affected. Rain is formed from moisture around airborne particulate matter. The larger the matter, the large the raindrop, and therefore the more torrential any subsequent downpour. If ice forms from the airborne moisture, we get hail. Again, size of hail depends on the original starting point.

Yes Krakatau did erupt several times, during the day of the big explosion, it was also actually four separate explosions, the third one of those the big one, but prior to that day there were already eruptions for several months (starting in may, culminating in august). Of course, it's nowhere near guaranteed this shall happen again.

I think it is a tad too early to call it a VEI5 and the strongest eruption in Indonesia since Agung 1963. Merapi 2010 was, in my opinion, stronger than this one with its 14 km long PF and comparable plume dimensions.

Glad there wasn’t any loss of life. Still, wildlife would have been affected. Will the evacuation continue indefinitely, or will people be allowed back right away?
