Rubber Ducky Isopods Kept Multiplying, so I Made This

Five months ago I made a dripping cave vivarium for my Rubber Ducky Isopods in an effort to move them out of bins. I thoroughly enjoyed that setup, but I regretted not going larger. I recently mentioned that I wanted to redo it and many of you wanted to see it as well. Here it is, enjoy!

I'm so excited to share this one! It's been in the works for a few weeks now and was a lot of work, but I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. How do you think it compares to the original?

Your Duckies are fortunate to be in the bigger happy place, that perfectly capture the beauty of nature. You posted this just in time as I started building my Ducky habitat based on your original idea last night. I like how you used cycled old substrates. If the wet rocks and under rocks are the hot spots, (just like what we observe in common Lolly Pollies in backyards), then I’d try increase such spots in my plan. Thank you again for this video at this timing!!!

It looks amazing; I want to move there! You know, a small-leaved Fittonia would really pop in that landscape. Your idea was good, just the wrong scale.

That actually makes it believable. Humans subcontiously de-randomize things. That's something nature isn't capable of. Throwing is pretty much what wind would do in nature. The leaves stay where they stay and drop where they drop. Perfect randomizer.

I love that spoiling animals that are quite fine with simple enclosures has become a recurring theme. We have to hear about it the first time a guest sees this amazing scape and asks, "What's in here?"

these last few builds have been truly on a new level! I'm loving the shift from tropical jungle looks for larger builds to something that much more closely resembles something you could head out and see locally. I'm studying herpetology and art, and one of my major crossroads interests is enclosure design. I feel like enclosures that house native species and mimic local environments could be an excellent way to get folks interested in conservation. The biggest step is letting people know what's out there!

It really shows how much you care for your animals knowing you were able to breed rubber ducky isopods. Youre such an amazingly kind and considerate human being for, despite learning this, you still wanted to make their tank bigger

It’s great to see someone who actually cares about the animals and doesn’t just use them for props and views, like so many animal RU-vidrs. Paul Cuffaro is maybe the worst offender. I’d love to get Tanner’s thoughts.

The algorithm is being unfair to you. Your recent videos have really been excellent and the new studio and capacity adds so much to your videos. I imagine a reptile/frog vid will help pull a few more views or another less-natural habitat like the crystal caves or play button one. Just hoping you keep getting enough support to make these vids. Maybe even patreon?

Beautiful setup but I couldn't help myself but to add a front view of a small water pooling area with a couple coolie loaches and/or maybe some nano-fish. I'd also need one area that had a small visible waterfall and I know the rubber ducky fans will hate me for this but I'd love to fill that tank with various poison dart frogs. Ohhh the possibilities. I have to hand it to you, such dedication for Rollie-Pollies.

Inspirational! Love your designs!! We have just finished our first bioactive paludarium for our African Bullfrog "Tugboat" and we used many of your concepts/lessons so firstly, thank you so much. Also if you haven't already looked into them we have recently acquired a small colony of "Shiro Utsuri" isopods and they are fantastic. They are way more active (visually) than any other colony we have, Including our "dairy cows". Anyways love your work and THANKS again!!

Brilliant as always! However, I have a question - either for Tanner or the community: I read that you have to be careful with hinged doors on vivariums containing isopods - as the young/mature isopods can escape the gap or be trapped/crushed by the doors. Is this a valid concern? If so, how do you negate it?

I just ordered a 10ct of rubber ducky isopods and have a terrarium set up for them already. It includes a moisture gradient, sphagnum moss, star moss, thread moss, a rock cave, decaying wood and leaves, and bark hides. We are leaving for 2 weeks near the 4th of July and I was wondering if it will be OK to leave them since the set up has many food options. My main concern is the moisture level. I currently have a lid that is completely screen. Should I make one out of plastic with holes in it so moisture is retained better?

You should open up some kind of zoo, give people a chance to look into all the little blocks of curated wilderness you put together. Any time I have been to a zoo, there's always a little building for reptiles, amphibians, and interesting bugs, and their habitats are always the saddest little things. Shame them with your cozy habitats!

I don't get how the water won't just completely soak up in the substrate? I mean at some point it'll get completely saturated , I guess, but if the pump runs without enough water to cycle it'll burn up. Maybe I just don't understand. I do get the egg crate reservoir but it has to go through all the substrate first
