Art Prof: Create & Critique Hi.! Thanks for your awesome tutorials! I’ve been stamping, embossing and paper crafting for a few years now, but I have yet to carve my own stamps! After watching your video, I have been inspired to finally give it a go! Also, Helpful hints: 1) Pick up an embossing buddy or anti static tool if you’re enjoying the Heat Embossing. Wipe the paper with the tool before stamping. This will help the powder not to stick! 2) Get yours some VERSAMARK clear embossing ink. It’s sticky and amazing ( for monotone , clear and detailed embossing). 3) Any ink can be used as a base for embossing powder! I often use clear detail or fine powder with my colored stamps. I also enjoy this technique, as I can be more creative blending the colors of the ink into my stamps! P.S. - It’s neat that you’re from NH. I am from VT. Thanks again 💜 Hannah

Omg the easiest transfer method ever is: draw your image as you want it to appear with ball point pen on regular paper. then flip the paper onto your block and dab it with an alcohol wetted cotton ball to dampen the paper. The less ink and alcohol the better (no big inky areas- these will bleed and blur, so just outline them) test your pens for transfer quality before committing to one.

Great tutorial! I'm expanding my techniques for etching metal jewelry and know that some people use stamps and Staz On ink pads as a resist for acid (actually more like a salt) etching. You did a really good time explaining this technique and I'm happy to see how much detail you can get. I still struggle with thinking about positive/negative space with design, but this helps to know you cut out around your pencil transfer.

Have you ever heard of letterboxing? It is a game similar to geocaching but instead of using a GPS- you use clues to find hardcarved stamps that people hide. You don’t take the stamp but just stamp your book and use your “trail stamp” to leave an image in the hiders logbook. Atlas quest or Letterboxing North America are websites for clues.

The part of the video explaining the carving of the stamp is well done, but the embossing information is incorrect. Check You Tube videos that are about cardmaking and you'll find better information. The embossing powder is a resin that melts under the heat of the heat gun. A clear ink called VersaMark is most often used to ink the stamp, but pigment ink (such as was used here) can be used. The heat gun should be turned on away from the stamp, then brought to it once it has warmed up. The heat gun doesn't need to be right on top of the powder and it should be moved around. Once you see the powder melting, you move on to another area. If you are seeing the powder melt and boil, you've gotten it too hot. If you are burning the paper, you have definitely gotten the surface too hot! And, pigment inks do dry, they just take longer than dye inks (which cannot be used for embossing).

Pigment ink does dry! It takes a hour or 2 or you set it wit the heat gun. And if your paper turns color you have already burned your embossing powder. Only heat it until it melts and looks wet.

Yeah, I totally burned the paper here! 😅 Really appreciate your tips! I've had some major issues with pigment ink drying on its own with some brands of card stock that have pearlescent sheen. If you are into sculpture, sometimes you can toss things like this into whatever compound you are using, as aggregate to expand the bulk/ save money on compound, & even improve the cast properties. Concrete might be an option, although some research shows it can develop air pockets, such as when using shredded tire rubber as an aggregate. You could probably throw them in something like paper mache pulp method; or if you use thick areas of modelling paste in paintings, etc

The comment at 02:21 is really confusing because afterwards you're demonstrating a technique (transferring a drawing from a page) where the final image will not be mirrored. You only need to keep this issue in mind if your initial drawing was done directly to the block. I printed mirrored letters and then transferred them from the page to a block and carved it out. Guess what the result is? Mirrored letters. That's totally my fault, but I was acting on your warning without actually giving a thought to the fact that it doesn't apply to the technique you demonstrate.
@artprof

Yes, in printmaking there are a lot of circumstantial rules that can change based on what you're specifically doing! I believe the video technique works for sketches already in a sketch book. Plus, going over them with marker helps you see what the final stamp will look like. So it seems to me there could be times to do it either way- by tracing paper or from a sketchbook drawing as shown in the video. They did mention other ways to do things. I feel the most helped when a thorough picture is mentioned, of all the possible ways to do such a task, so you see the method in context, among this big picture of possibilities. That teaches you the most. Blessings everyone. Peace. Love wins
