Great Video, I'd only add that anyone wanting to minimize the lint build up with this method get a PCV Towel. It's like a rubbery towel you moisten first and leaves no lint, super absorbent too!
Your dreads are awesome man, I'm thinking about getting dreads myself so I watched all your videos and I think your very informative. I'm looking forward to your next Dreadlocks update, peace out man.
Hey Connor, I'm just starting out on my locks adventure but may I ask can I wear my beanie from the start or will this interfere with the locking process....cheers pal
Just started mine yesterday and am so excited for my journey!! I love how everyone can use different methods and that there is no right or wrong way it's just personal...which i think gives the person doing it have even more character...cant wait till mine aren't poofy tho lol
So after Im at the point where my roots are not locked up and my tips are not but the rest is can I crochet the in dreaded parts using the towel method as a starter
Thanks Connor! I learned a lot from this short vid, I am starting to do this method with a microfiber towel and I already look like sideshow Bob lololol peace bro ✌️ ☮️ ❤
My first set of dreads i did the rubbing method, I used the palm of my hand ✋ worked like a charm. My current set of locs i used rubber bands as well as the rubbing method.
Main question I got when I shower do I let any water run through it or anything? I know I shouldn’t shampoo or condition and What do I do when I’m sleeping??
My hair is about 3 inches and I’m going to freeform now so how should I start? Should I wash my hair once a week n can I wet my hair everyday with water? And as for towel rubbing do I need to rub when it’s wet or dry? And do salt spray do I need to spray first n then rub or rub it dry n then spray? Pls answer my questions I’m in two weeks in but nothing improved😢
So with this method, do you need sea salt everytime you rub the hair or not at all if u dont want to? And I didn't really get the washing count, once a week? With or without schampoo? Sorry for my english, and I would be very happy if you would answer soon! I want my dreads too look exactly like yours in 1 year update :D
RihoGaming so not you don't need the sea salt. You spray that every two to three day on depending how it feels. Rub everyday at the beginning. Until your happy and cut down as you feel the dreads are coming along. Wash every week or two at the beginning depending on how bad you need to.
okay so I have a gargantuan matte on the back of my hair, will it turn into locks or just a bigger matte? started towel rubbing a 4 or 5 days ago with sea salt spray, my hair is bleached professionally (therefore not fried), and straight. I actually have around 4 or 5 locks formed already, so I dont know why this is different. but please help cause I dont know what I'm supposed to do with it. edit: it's around 6 inches long
If you do the rubbing method how long will it take before you start to have “dreads” form as opposed to just having a big puffy mess..? A day? Days? Weeks? Months?
Alex Diaz how long is it. If it's too long it may not work as well with the sections. I have no experience with it. I know shoulder length hair will work for sure and maybe a bit longer. Sorry I can't help more. Anyone else know or have done it with long hair?
I've just started the rub method a week ago. I bought some dread shampoo but I'm not sure how often I should wash my hair and also how should I dry my hair?
Bobby Ownby wash your hair every week to two week depending on how itchy your head is. Just be gentle when drying it and dry in circular motions clockwise then anti clockwise.
Invest in a good hair dryer. I sit with it for a few hours after towel drying my locs. my locs are to my waist so shouldnt take that long for you but if you're dedicated you'll need to make a habit of it You don't want any moisture staying in your hair, could lead to mould.
Yeah of course if it long enough. You may find that you will have to palm roll more and separate certain dreads as they may join together when tied up.
you can just towel dry it as dry as you can get it. then air dry. if you do to bed with it wet then but a tam or big beenie on you head so you dont get cold in the night and will help prevent dread rot too. I don't use a hair dryer any more and do just that.
tul mings Hey Tul, your hair at the ends will dread up as they get older and mature. If you want them to be dreads straight away then you could crochet hook them to the tips. Hope this helps:)
@@fhgcam8091 no you definitely do wash dreads when freeforming. You don't conditioner, you should use a residue free shampoo because greasy hair doesn't lock up as well
Im not sure sorry. Mine started in one mass but the more I rubbed the more little dreads would appire. I did not tie mine up at the start as I could not really. The set I have now I only rubber for a week then let them dread them selfs for the rest of the time. if there was some that I thought would be too thick then I would seperate by hand by pulling apart.
@@Knottytrent okay I’ll try give it more time and focus on separating the locked strands from each other as opposed to de-clumping the whole mass. Don’t suppose you have any tips for separating the strands as I can normally only seem to do it by pulling almost singular strands of hair at a time. Thanks for your help and reply, love you vids x
Hi Connor, hope you can help. Can you let me know when it's time to stop towel rubbing and you can just let your dreads grow? Thanks for the videos they've been much help!
Aaron Tranter hey, so you can stop towel rubbing after a week or two of you want. That’s when I stopped. My hair was no way near fully locked but I just left it and did a towel rub when ever I went in the sea or washed it but that was it. They will lock up eventually man patients is key to nice set of dreads.
@@Knottytrent perfect thanks very much. Been watching all your videos found them very helpful. Mine are starting to look more like dreads now, been doing the method for about 3 weeks so will let them do there thing now and towel rub every now and then. Look forwards to updating you on them in 6 months time! Thanks again!
How do you get your hair to not look so 'big' at the beginning stage? Once it really starts to dread up will it flatten down more? Thanks for going into detail too this really helps
Hobbsy well for some people then haha, the best thing is to just sleep I guess. I did my dreads with twist and rip and I rub my hair to get them to stick down and I just wear a hat.
Hobbsy just let it stick up. It will look bad and messy and people will stare at you but in the end they'll look amazing. Even if you do twist and rip or back comb they will stick up for awhile anyway. All dreads stick up then there new I guess But back to the point I just left it how it is
At the beginning I washed my hair 2-3 weeks I think. Just wash it when you need to. Just remember that knots will fall out when you wash. After 2 months it should not be too bad. If you going in the sea then I would say when ever as that’s great for your hair. You your head is itchy or you feel like you want to wash it then just go for it :). Should be fine
Hey i really Love Your dreads i also want to get myself dreads in the future(my hair is still too short) and i really like the results of the rubbing technique but i do have really thin and straight hair so my fear is that they will fall apart before they get the chance to lock while showering so my question is whether thats true or not and if i should consider another method to start my dreadlock journey? Greetings from Germany Lorenzo
Lorenzo Schröter it should work over time but will take longer. There lots of methods that would work better. You should research back combing, crochet hook or maybe twist and rip. These should stay in so your hair should stay in dreads :). Good luck. By all means try the rubbing method and let me know how it goes. :).
Connor Trent yeah im familiar with the other methods but i think i will try the towelrubbing method thanks for the reply and btw you have a good taste in music :)
kodubbe just until your happy yes. I did mine for a week then left them ever since. First time I did this method I rubber for three months then rubbed on loose hair. It's up to you really where to and when and how long. Until you like it! :)
Connor Trent right on. if it will just continuously lock up the dreads then I'm all about this method! I just don't want to be counter productive and rub loose something that was already locked up. thanks for your response man
NomacJack Sweet i will probably towel/ wool rub and sea salt spray myself until i get visible dreads forming and then let them lock up by themsleves. how many dreads you have now?
ezewade04 I use a dreadlocks bar I got from ebay. It from a woman in Australia who hand makes them. It does not have a brand I just looked at the wrapping and it just say dreadlocks soap haha sorry not more help.
Natural Roots yeah that's right but you can separate them. If you don't want the congos. I personal quite like them. With controlled rubbing on curtain parts of the head you will get what ever outcome you wish.
Diegolink it depends on your hair type if you have thunk curly hair then quicker than fine long hair. It also depend if hiw long you rub for be a week like me or 5 months.
Ik this is a 4 year old video but I need help haha. Is my hair supposed to link together everywhere like a big not all around haha. My hair is already super long
Tall Frenchy You could stop now and let them finish them self if you want to. I would not over rub otherwise you will start you join up the dreads that have formed with others unless you want that. You can focus rubbing on parts of the head that has more loose hair.
Connor Trent it’s just the back of my head I got a lot of loose hair so they fell out but I guess just let it be and should I make a video of my dread update and then u can see it and tell me if I shuf keep rubbing
make a video for you not me. Then you can see your progress. You just need to be patient brothey will come just maybe spray twice a week with salt spray, wear wooly hats that helps loose hair get pulled in. if you don't want any loose hair you should get a crochet hook and tuck in. but they will only get better in time :)
x-chetito XIII I have not heard of that before but it will work both ways as if you rub anti clockwise then there should be more friction? I’m not sure I’m just going with what worked for me. Thanks though I will look in to it :)
x-chetito XIII yeah I don't see why not. As long as your rubbing it should be fine. Just make sure your sponge is not going to fall apart and get in to your dreads.
Franky Ortega I used a crochet hook the first time. And I have gone for more free form this time. I rubbed my hair for a week then I have freeformed for a year. I only rough dry it which helps the locking up.
