City of Sydney Councillor Linda Scott hits out at “rubbish” claims from the Opposition on the housing crisis.
A former Victorian Supreme Court judge has argued that Australia must treat housing as a human right.
“I won’t cop Peter Dutton and the conservatives blaming individuals, and particularly blaming young people for the fact that these are economic conditions that are driving the housing affordability crisis,” Ms Scott told Sky News host Paul Murray.
“That is just rubbish, and we have to call that out.”

My wife studying her doctorate and me working with my father have to move the middle of Australia and abandon our family ties because we aren’t pulling our heads in? Can’t even call you the word you deserve because you would cry about it.

Definitely a point to consider, but if we had had an extra few million houses lying around, it wouldnt have been an issue. Other countries have much bigger populations than us, so the number of people isnt the issue. Indonesia has 275 million people; roughly 10 times what we do. And yet, its only a quarter of the size. I absolutely do not buy the argument about the number of people. The housing problem has been brewing for decades. 30-40 years. My dad bought a house in 1984 in an average Sydney suburb, on a single wage, as a baker. He didnt own the business, he was a regular employee. He didnt earn vast amounts of money. But the house cost about 3 times his salary. Governments have literally done everything they can to mess up supply, and been there with their hands out seeking money for every step along the way, vastly inflating the relative time and cost to bring a house to market. This is ALL governments here in Australia, and has nothing to do with the mob in charge today. I dont give a rats arse about the blame game, which is all they seem to be doing. What I want to see are SOLUTIONS. They behave like children, and yet, its worst, because WE, the TAXPAYER, are paying them, and they cant be arsed to behave like grown ups. WTF is wrong with these clowns? All of them. I wish we could sack the lot of them, and start from zero.

You can clearly see the smirk in Linda's face. This woman and the whole labor party have neither shame nor integrity.

Well, it's too little, too late. The public housing should have been planned more than two decades ago as it takes years to plan it out and building them takes at least 2~3 years. Both Labor and Liberal failed as their ministers were profiting from high housing prices. Many ministers owns many properties in Australia and they're loving it while poor and working class suffer.

We shouldn't need public housing but for those on welfare. Our economy should be such that any worker in a full time job of moderate skill level should be able to afford a house. In fact, if one spouse stays home to care for the home and kids, the tax should be averaged between both so the tax free threshold effectively doubles, leaving more money for the stay at home raising of children.

@@dagwould but at the moment two average incomes can’t afford an average home. And by ‘average’ home I mean a 2 bedroom asbestos timber shack 2 hours from a capital city. It’s ridiculous how little a working couple can afford.

Didn't the government allocate like 1/2 million per homeless next year? That's more than the usual family yearly income, should be more than enough if any of it ACTUALLY makes it to the homeless population

When you move away from family home area, you are not in the position to help family members. Examples: cancer appointments, picking up kids from school and making a simple meal and dropping it off to elders. I could list so many everyday tasks, we do for each other.

It's not a salary issue at all. It's the greed in housing/houses. Real-estate completely out of control with overseas buyers and people owning way too many investment properties. Too many people coming to this country since we opened up the boarders after COVID, playing "catch up" which forces every day Ozzie's missing out on owning/renting a home, no such thing as free or even cheaper courses to get our Ozzie's qualified for jobs to prevent this "job shortages". Government excuse with all these people coming to Australia is the Job Shortage, okay sure fair enough. But what about having the people already here have a chance to get qualified? Sorry love but I would NOT be surprised when you were studying to be a Judge/Law it's a LOT cheaper and easier than it was for you then it is for us now.

The housing affordability issue will take years to fix (unless it is attacked on a war footing) All the politicians know this, but they will never pass up an opportunity to argue with each other over the issue. It's simply economics of supply and demand. And every day there is an imbalance, rents will go up and up and up. And a generations wealth and savings will be transferred to a fortunate few.

“Record investment into public housing” you also have record house prices, taxes are through the roof, purchasing power is equivalent to what my dog leaves on the lawn every morning. The ponzi scheme is showing, dribble what ever you want lady but no one will vote labour for the next 12 years until they forget again. All liberal has to do is say 0 immigrants for 2-3 years until housing is under control and then back to their normal 0-80k a year like it used to be

If a country needs 'public housing' something has gone very wrong, except for people on welfare, of course.

Let me clear here..every asian came to Australia all keep changing dogy course with dogy school to get their student visa...they hardly even go to their school and work full time in cash...and some of them live like this more than 10 years..sent big untaxed money back to their country..majority indian, chinese, phillipine, asians. Also they do skill course like building carpentary to only qualify for Pr and once they get PR, all switch to drive taxies and buy house with untaxed black money bring back...inflating housing market...clearly australian immigration fault and government fault .... you guys need to wake up soon before to late. Autralia wake upp😮

I used to live in ausi..and every landlord are either chinese or indians...finally i back to Nz and so happy...those asian keep increasing rents and some of houses they put 8 international indian students...australian need to wake up...internationl students keep changing dogy course and getting visa to work in cash..some students stay there more than 10 years sending lots of untaxed money back home country...they take courses later to get PR but they never work in that skill jobs like carpentary, welding, diploma dogy courses..later once they get Pr, they arrange those black untaxed money come back and inflating housing market in australia. No one talk about this.. autralian really need to wake up and stop giving visa and PR to asian, indians, chinese...rather bring more kiwis, germans, swiss people..
