This was eye opening! I came here to find out more of Ruby's relationship with Alan Rickman and this popped up. Love what Ruby is doing with putting mental illness out there. I suffer from severe chronic depression and my brother and 8 ancestors died from it. So its a constant stryggle. Then within the past 4 months I lost the love of my life and my exhusband both. Im isolating but I'll get better. Thank u again Ruby

I've had an anxiety disorder since my childhood, and of the things I found about how other people treated me on that basis was a lot different then, (1970s, onwards) than people with mental illness are now. I can't speak for each person but, I reckon that it because they were ignorant about my illness because I spent so much time trying (often in vain) to hide it. My behaviour seemed strange to them because they seemed to be 'normal' and didn't feel anxious 24/7 as I did. I think that my 'illness' also made me prone to depression and that made me moody but that was because the anxiety wasn't conducive to feelings of happiness. I mean think about what it's like feeling worried without valid reason 24/7 and then you'll be able to understand why I often felt so unhappy. My illness also convinced me that the way to be respected etc was to hide behind a false facade of self-confidence coupled with aggression, because I thought that was the way to get on in life, but I know now that I was wrong. I realize that it's ok to be quiet, introverted, etc because actually, I found that my sensitive nature seemed to make me care and be considerate even while continuing to struggle with self-doubt and almost crippling anxiety. Thinking back to my childhood, I wonder how I managed to cope with the illness. My self-esteem was low because the anxiety made me prone to introversion and the things that 'normal' people take for granted seemed unobtainable to me and so my childhood onwards was often lonely and with much unhappiness. One thing I learned is that it's easy to put up a facade when we feel unsure about how other people will react and treat a person with a mental illness. I think that I did that because I felt ashamed and unworthy of respect etc, but I know that I didn't choose to have an anxiety disorder. I also know now that it's ok, to an extent to miss the mark of imperfect perfection because human society isn't perfect and that's because no one is perfect. How the anxiety developed, I'll probably never know, but if it were possible to relive my childhood, I hope that the mistakes I made when I discovered I wasn't well, would help me to try to be brave and present myself without the facade and hopefully learn to accept myself as I am and if I find that other people accepted me and didn't expect me to be how they think I should be, maybe, just maybe, I might be a more content and happy person.

I’m 80 and cried a little too much watching this open confession. So many years of fear only to realise so very much not addressed from a very young age. Looking back the signs were being megaphoned but as mentioned “pull yourself together” was not only the mantra from others but one that enveloped my every thinking. It is very heart warming though to see that the stigma is being addressed and “coming out” if not the norm is hopefully less taboo.

The way urban society is structured makes it difficult to deal with mental health issues. It's highly individualistic. There's little sense of community. It's work, work, work all the time just to make ends meet. There's no real social connection that's not on the internet or career based. There's little play time that's social and hands on. We're online constantly scared by pessimistic entertainment or distracted by hollow entertainment. Thus there's little time to confront psychological problems or deal with social conflicts. We're disconnected from our family, friends and neighbors.

I can relate. Boy, oh boy, I can relate. I suffered for years never wanting to be diagnosed as clinically depressed because of the stigma. Only after “hitting the wall” did I seek out treatment. Thanks to some wonderful people I am doing ok now. Medicated to the hilt I can now function on a daily basis without the fear of slipping into a depressive period. I realize the meds are going to be a lifelong “thing.” I’m reminded of a lyric from a Paul Simon song everyday I take my meds; “People like us may get better, but we’ll never be well.” Just a fact I have to live with.

Well, now in 2023, I think things are somewhat different. Depression, anxiety, OCD or eating dissorders are not so big stigma in my opinion anymore. Maybe thanks to celebrities who are open about it. What remains taboo, is schizophrenia.

"It's a 1000 times more anguishing than physical pain". Hmmm, that's a blunt statement. I bet that man never experienced severe physical pain. Or at least not over a prolonged time. And, yes I know depression. I've been hospitalised for 3.5 years for it.

You don’t know how he felt, just like how he doesn’t how you felt. Wanting to end your life is worse than any pain I have ever felt and I have Fibromyalgia. One persons experience is different to another. This is why people don’t talk because they are judged, just like you just did.

Pain can not be quantified. Also, everyone has a different threshold for pain. Can’t we give each other some grace & try to extract all the helpful things out of this well produced documentary? Why nitpick at incidentals?

Perhaps restaurant critics should have a moral responsibility to only publicize positive reviews and make the criticism private and sensitively handled for the chefs personal growth .The restaurant should at least be granted a chance to demonstrate positive improvements and reverse negative ratings .
@lepolhart3242
@lepolhart3242 9 месяцев назад
Then people don`t improve if they are only getting positive reviews. There is a way to convey a negative review in a civil way without getting personal and nasty but if we`re always positive and nice to each other then we don`t strive for excellence. Only the strong survive and if we don`t adapt, we die.
@celestialcircledance

@@lepolhart3242 if you read my comment carefully you'll see that I don't disagree with you but feel that criticism should be offered privately as at first so that the owner has a chance to rectify the problem without putting the business in jeopardy .

Usually people who have suffered trauma, have something on them in which they get stuck. The magazine woman was interviewed in 2012 but is still wearing make up and clothes from the time of her youth. If people get good therapy you see that they suddenly change their appearance to the nowadays ways. They change their clothes or interior, make up etc.
