He has become a Hollywood Legend.
song: Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life..
sung by Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald
Lyrics:
"Song Lyrics:
Ah! sweet mystery of life, at last I've found thee;
Ah! At last I know the secret of it all;
All the longing, seeking, striving, wait ing, yearning,
The idle hopes, the joys and burning tears that fall!
For 'tis love, and love alone, the world is seeking;
And it's love, and love alone, I've wait - ted for;
And my heart has heard the answer to it's calling --
For it is love that rules for ever - more!"
Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life
AH! sweet mystery of life, at last I've found thee;
Ah! I know at last the secret of it all;
All the longing, striving, seeking, waiting, yearning,
The burning hopes, the joys and idle tears that fall!
For 'tis love, and love alone, the world is seeking;
And it's love, and love alone, that can reply;
'Tis the answer, ti's the end and all of living,
For it is love alone that rules for aye!
Rida Johnson Young (1869-1926) Lyrics.
There's a long time line and convoluted history to the story behind Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life
Irish composer Victor Herbert(1859-1924) first composed several comic operas (operettas) one of which was Naughty Marietta, that included a setting of this song written circa 1910 by Rida Johnson Young.
Later Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer made a film in which Jeanette McDonald sang the song with Nelson Eddy in a scene in the 1934 opperetta.
VICTOR HERBERT- Music
"Upon his arrival in New York in 1886, Herbert began playing, conducting, and composing at a furious pace. By 1894, he had his first operetta staged on Broadway; over the next 22 years, he would compose more than 40 others. His 1903 hit, "Babes in Toyland," brought a childlike innocence to the usually ardent operetta and also gave the world, as his shows usually did, a hit song or two: the lullaby "Toyland" and "March of the Toys" are still played by battalions of high school marching bands who have never even heard the term "operetta."
Unfortunately, Herbert's tunes were more memorable than the work of some of his lyricists: "Ah! sweet mystery of life, at last I've found thee" doesn't seem particularly moving now, but the song proved integral to its show, "Naughty Marietta" (1910), where it actually figured into resolving the plot -- a rare occurrence in operetta. The show itself is generally regarded as the first operetta set in America."

He was a gentleman, handsome, and a wonderful actor who could express emotion superbly. Such a shame he passed so young. Valentino eternally young.

94 years later he still comes out of the screen and takes hold of you. Incredible human being, actor, Rudolph Valentino doesn't receive enough credit for what an awesome actor he was, and, an author and poet as well. When he was about 26 he put out an illustrated exercise, fitness book, he wrote poems about his dispute with the studio and at that time he and Natasha toured and danced the tango for a fee to earn money, because the dispute with the studio made it so he could not work. He was extremely bright as well as drop dead gorgeous. AMAZING video, thank you for posting!!! Before his death he made a deal with the studio, $10k a week (=$520,000.00 annually) and a percentage of the gross. Just all the way around fantastic human being gone WAY too soon.

There was never one like him, and there will never be one like him, because he simply had it all, and spite his always clean and perfect appearance private and in his movies, he was a masculin beautiful man, borned to give beauty to the world, to show what women loved and adored and needed to feel loved. Today in our cold and ugly world he would not stand a chance, because the male and female sex are no longer passioned and in need for that kind of soft and lovely romance. He left far to young yes, but he closed the time where men were gentlemen and passioned lovers. He belong to the era he lived in, and even he left the scene for good, his legacy will remain in the same beauty and kind personality. R.I.P. Darling Rudy......

Yes, he dressed impeccably and in the forefront of style. Those pinched in waists and lovely wool suits -- be still my heart! He popularized wrist watches (rather than the usual pocket watches of the time) and male jewelry -- Natacha, his wife, bought him a slave bracelet of platinum links which you can see in photos. American men were hugely threatened by this, and called him effeminate, but American women knew better. He was a gifted natural dancer (tango, esp.), a wonderful horseback rider, boxer, fencer.....and loved nothing more than ripping a car engine apart and reassembling it -- he loved to tinker with machinery. Unfortunately he was a heavy smoker (4 packs a day) which probably would have killed him in later life had he not died so young. He also did not see to his stomach health and a rotten appendix and perforated ulcer led to septicemia which killed him because there were no antibiotics in that era, at age 31. SO SAD. If he'd seen to that, gotten a great agent to lobby for better roles, and a good accountant to put him on a budget (he spent money like crazy and was always in debt), he could have been a great success. He was one of the first stars to suffer from fan crazes and he didn't like it when people stared at him. Women would rip his clothes off if allowed to. He had to run to escape rabid fans more than once. If he would have had other stars with which to figure out how to handle fandom he'd have done much better and been happier in his private life, I think. He first defined the Latin Lover and was the forerunner of Ramon Navarro, Caesar Romero, Anthony Quinn, Antonio Banderas, Benecio del Toro, and even "exotics" of "mysterious" origin like Yul Brynner (of Swiss and Siberian extraction from Vladivostok, Russia). Had Rudy been successful in talkies, I see him as a Cary Grant because he could do drama but also had a wonderful flair for comedy that can be seen in Monsieur Beaucaire. He loved camera work too so he may have ended up being a cameraman or director if he did not make it into talkies. If you listen to Rossano Brazzi, I imagine this may have been what Valentino sounded like in terms of accent -- VERY sexy indeed! His playing a double role in Son of the Sheik shows him in older makeup and gives us an idea of what he might have looked like at age 50 -- still very handsome and distinguished.

@Barbara Shernoff There is a lovely youtube tribute to him with quotes by Norma Talmadge which talks about how nice he was, how unassuming. At the end is a slo-mo of him riding a horse dressed as the sheik, and at one point he turns to the camera and smiles -- just pure joie de vivre......I love that entire tribute; it's called Hoping to be Kindly Remembered and it just breaks your heart....no wonder women of the era adored him....so do we even now....

Wonderful observations. He was a wonderful man and great artist of course. I wish he'd been more careful regarding his ulcers. He was actually suffering for 2 years. But ignored all warnings.

I agree with you. He hated the latin lover image and was pulling away from it. He was unhappy about it and as you said was very unhappy with fans who pulled at him. He would spread his wings and done it all like grant in the 30s. Alas. Thst being said he took pride in his work. And gave it his all no matter what part. His wife led him of course though from true self

He was a huge success in his lifetime. This success (no privacy, not being able to go anywhere unnoticed and unharassed) and the unfair criticism on his manhood led to anxiety and nervousness, which contributed to an unhealthy lifestyle of smoking more and more, drinking too much bootleg whiskey, erratic dieting, driving dangerously and overspending. This caused his health problems and early death. He would have needed good counseling to help him cope with the cost of huge fame, never before seen in history. In those days they didn’t go to a psychologist or psychiatrist, didn’t know enough about the danger of smoking to excess and heavy drinking. A man should be able to hold his liquor and the more a man could drink without showing being drunk, the more he was admired.

My Beautiful Friends, we are a Community of Spirits! How I soar with the music of this song, take flight with the memories of a culture lost, yet in sound remembered. Can you feel the heartbeat? Yes, the soul of our striving shall always beat, and whatever darkness the world shall bear, we will know our freedom and flight in the end. (This has NOTHING to do with race or color, please understand. Those of good heart, whomsoever, will know and hear these words.) Long live Mozart, Django, & Bird!

thanks for your comments and praise. Valentino must have been an interesting person, charismatic and original. I was surprised to find that photo of him in a scene from the ballet Lápres'midi dún faune. I was surprised to find just one photo. Valentino andCharlie Chaplin were friends of Vaclac NIJINSKY, the ballet dancer who made famous the Faune .There must be more photos of Valentino in that outfit.

I used to see all his movies in the 1950s, and I thought Mario Lanza was great. But after I listen to Pavarotti, Placi Domingo, Carreras, I noticed that Mario Lanza was " a popular tenor", still a very good one. Pity he died so young.

I LOVE YOUR TRIBUTES TO VALENTINO!! ANYONE THAT LOVES RUDY IS SPECTACULAR in my book!! RUDY! RUDY! RUDY!!!!!! ps the first two Faun pics were not of Rudy, the 3rd one was Rudy. Rudy was painted to immitate the original Faun guy guided by Natachas artistic suggestion. The first two pics were of the original Faun man. (I will get his name for you!!!) pss. Anyhow Rudy's body is far better as the Faun for sure!! Just look at him playing that flute!!! hmmmm that Rudy!!!! Delicious Man!!

If it can't be proved, then how can someone claim it? I don't understand why this often happens when someone famous dies. Often people have to find some mystery about it. Sometimes people just die.
