What’s happening in this Rudy movie clip?
With Notre Dame leading 17-3, Devine (Chelcie Ross) sends all the seniors into the game except Rudy (Sean Astin from The Lord of The Rings), despite Steele's and the assistant coaches’ urging. Fans are aware of Rudy’s goal from a story in the student newspaper, and a "Rudy!" chant begins in the stadium. Hearing this, the Notre Dame offensive team, led by tailback Jamie O'Hara (Vince Vaughn from The Lost World: Jurassic Park and The Cell), overrules Devine's call for victory formation and scores a quick touchdown, providing defensive player Rudy a chance to get in the game and be entered onto the Fighting Irish roster. Devine finally lets Rudy play on the Notre Dame kickoff to Georgia Tech.

What’s the Rudy movie about?
A young man learns to let nothing stop him from realizing his ambitions in this drama, based on a true story. Rudy (Sean Astin from The Lord of The Rings) dreams of attending Notre Dame University, and playing on the Fighting Irish football team. However, Rudy's dream doesn't seem very practical; his father works in a steel mill and can ill afford to send his son to Notre Dame, while Rudy's grades are not especially impressive, and standing a shade over five feet tall and weighing a little over 100 pounds, Rudy is hardly built for the gridiron. However, with the help of Father Cavanaugh (Robert Prosky), Rudy is admitted to Holy Cross, and in his junior year manages to squeak into Notre Dame as a transfer student. Rudy works as an assistant to the football stadium's groundskeeper to pay his tuition and appears at tryouts for the football team. Rudy is made a member of the practice team but Coach Ara Parseghian (Jason Miller) is impressed with Rudy's devotion and determination, and pledges that he'll allow him to dress for one game before he graduates, so his name can be recorded as an official member of the team. However, the arrival of a new coach and a tough season that allows for few unnecessary players may put a stop to Rudy's dreams within sight of the finish line.

I remember back in 2009 we had just made the playoffs in high school and were on the road to play the number 1 seeded team. It was a 2 hour drive and coach put this movie on the bus to inspire us. That night in the locker room he ended the speech before the game with "be Rudy tonight". We lost the game 56-6

I think that was the worst thing a coach could do. Watching a feel-good story about a guy, living in a fantasy world. While it makes for a great movie, truth was... Rudi's fate (playing time) depended on a couple of guys who leaned on their coach. Realistically, he had virtually NO chance of starting, much less playing. All he cared about was putting that uniform on, and making an appearance. All he wanted was... to dress, one game, just so he could say he was part of the team. That's what I would call... a bucket-list "dreamer". And dreamers tend to get knocked on their asses. Imagine had they NOT liked him. There would be NO story. That's how close he came to the reality of it. Pure pipe dream. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Gotta feeling that the team, who scored 56 points, didn't watch Rudy before the game.

Gives me goosebumps. Amazing. I had a Rudy moment in High school basketball. I was a bench warmer and my friend Mark Gray told me he was going to get the crowd cheering for me to get in. By the one minute mark he had the entire crowd cheering for me. Coach finally told me to take off my sweats and just from that the crowd was on their feet. Went I went in the entire crowd gave me a standing ovation. Never forget it. Everyone deserves a moment like that in their life. Thank you Mark Gray!!

I never gave up the dream, however, and when I was healthy in my early 30s, I played semi-pro football with a bunch of former Division I players for a team in the North American Football League. I'm a 41 year old man and I am not ashamed to admit that I get teary eyed everytime I see the team carry Rudy off the field. Even if I never attended the university of Notre Dame, I think it would be more than enough for me to walk through the campus halls, take in a lecture, eat in the student union, read one of the books in the library, and top it all off with a winning Notre Dame football game. When it comes to academia, Notre Dame really sets the bar high alongside Princeton, Harvard, and Georgetown.

My brother went to school there from 1990-1994. I was only 10-14 at that time, but my parents and I went to a game every year while he was attending school and after he graduated, the four of us went to a game every year for probably another ten years after that. It is a beautiful campus. Even though I’d seen it so many times, seeing the Golden Dome and the Grotto never got old. So many other traditions too. The band entering the stadium. All the different dorms selling burgers and hotdogs on the quad. Funny you mention reading one of the books in the library. We always used to go to the bathroom there before the game. It was like our little secret because nobody was ever in it vs the overcrowded bathrooms at the stadium. I would have liked to go there, but I never even bothered to apply. My brother was a lot smarter than I was. I actually ended up going to school called St. John’s in Minnesota. The campus is similar in a lot of ways, but it’s much smaller and it has a winning football team too, but it’s D3. In fact, it’s past coach, John Gagliardi has the most wins in all of college football.

I was actually at this game when they were filming. ND was playing Boston College and it was COLD! My dad and I ducked in a building to get warm before the game and we ran into the GT and ND "players" standing in a hallway. We couldn't figure out what was happening until halftime. That's when the public address informed us of the filming and informed the crowd to cheer wildly during the "plays" and when Sean Astin ran onto the field and when he "sacked" the QB! The crowd went crazy like it was real! Great memories! My dad is gone now but that memory will always be there for me! ND went on to throttle both GT AND Boston College that day!

What I find amazing is that guys who I know aren't Notre Dame fans, even a few who hate Notre Dame, _love this movie_ and tear up a little at the end. That's because, as important as the university is to the story, _Rudy_ isn't really about Notre Dame or its football team. No, at it's heart, it's a small story. It's a story about a man with a dream. This man follows his dream with an indomitable determination, taking every gut-punch that life throws at him and getting up again. Everyone can relate to that story because we've all taken the same gut-punches but maybe we didn't always get up. That's why it's so incredibly satisfying to see this man finally win out in the end. That is why you don't have to love Notre Dame to love this movie.

Honestly, I think Rudy getting IN to Notre Dame was the far greater/tougher accomplishment. As much as their football team gets most all the attention they're really pretigous academically too and Rudy had to overcome dyslekia (who back then even heard of it?) as well as his not so great HS grades and only managed to get in on the final try. Like that janior guy says, the bottom line, most important thing is that you're going to get a degree from one of the best universities in the country (who just so happens to have the finest college football team in the land though I reckon Bear Bryant and Alabama might have something to say about that!).

I love this real life story. It is one of my favorite movies. I don't own many movies but this one "Rudy" I have it. I could watch it over and over and over. It will never get old. It is something that we can all identify with, The dream, the things that stand in our way of achieving that dream, That one thing that gives us that reality check and push in the right direction, failures along the way, receiving help from various places and people ( Yes, even help from God), the hard work that it is going to take to achieve that dream and lastly the fulfilment of that dream. I am a man, a soldier, a war vet, but it still waters my eye for a good reason. Well Done Rudy and so many others that fulfill their dream against all odds. This movie and others like it, help to bring encouragement to a challenging life filled with opposition.

One of the most uplifting films of all time that proves that even the underdog longshot can do amazing things with hard work and determination... Or... The greatest college football team in history ran up the score with 2 extra touchdowns they didn't need and then they sent in the smallest player in college football history to sack their quarterback.

I was always very small as a kid. My grandfather knew I loved to play football. He always told me I was too small. He passed away in front of my eyes from a massive heart attack when I was 8. I eventually had his build. Broad in the shoulders but taller. I stood 5 foot 2 as a freshman 120 pounds. Worked hard and genetics helped. Stood 5’9” as a sophomore 180 pounds. We were down in the fourth quarter 3rd and long. Coach had faith in me as the most reliable receiver as the tight end. Called a 10 yard TED DUMP as we called it where I would fake the block and run for a short gain. Carried that ball dragging people past the first down marker. Anyone reading this enjoy your high school days. They feel like they are the worst, but they are the best.
