I bet the kitty wandered away from it's mama, and crawled into the pipe because it was curious, and then got stuck. It's amazing how cats can get stuck in the weirdest places. Poor baby. I'm glad it was rescued, though.

I faced a similar case a few years back. Unfortunately the drain was buried under a concrete sidewalk. I was in a town where I knew noone and none from the nearby shops had the will to help me or do anything. I was asking for someone to call the fireservice and direct them where we were but they all discouraged me saying "forget it, lost cause, they wont come". I felt there were limited options, 1 to find someone from the building were the drain came down from and have him pure water with high pressure so it could maybe push the kitten out, but it could also drown it. 2 find someone with a concrete hammer drill to destroy the pavement which noone would acept to do and could also kill the poor kitten in the process. I was there for hours trying to get it to grab a wooden stick or at least hoping it will move on its own out of the drain. I left with a heavy heart thinking of the terrible fear and death this poor little soul would go through in there without any help. I was sad for many days and it still makes me sad thinking about it. I love cats, I love all animals.. especially helpless little kittens... :( I felt then and to this day that I didnt do enough to save this soul, I withdrew very easily because I was discouraged. I should have pressured them to call the fireservice. It makes me more sad now seeing there is a tool which could have helped. I didnt know who to call, I was in an unfamiliar town and noone was willing to help me or the poor kitten. :(
