How cool that Rudy gets to do his OWN trademark vo-dee-oh-do !

My grandmother had a few of his records. This about 55 years ago.

A TRUE CLASSIC with Rudy!

I'm old enough to remember his doing this on some television show.

I was born in 1958, and only recently discovered Rudy. I think he was wonderful. It must have been wonderful for him to see how music developed from his time. I suspect he didn't see it all as bad as my grandparents generation seemed to do.

I was fortunate to conduct interviews with Vallee, and remember quite well what prompted him to make this recording. When the U.K. group, The New Vaudeville Band, recorded "Winchester Cathedral" on the Fontana label and it became an international hit, disc jockeys speculated that the recording must have been prompted by a Rudy Vallee performance from the 1920s. When contacted about it, Vallee was astounded because he had never heard of the song--but he was quick to cash in on it by making his own recording, singing into the microphone through one of his trademark megaphones.

The 60's went the full spectrum in music, but this one was just plain fun... right up there with "Nashville Cats", ya couldn't explain it but you could sing it, and smile for some reason!

He was an early Elvis-like figure. Parents hated him because the kids were so crazy about him.

I remember this song as a kid & it was so catchy. I would pinch my nose shut to try to sound just like that. I went to the University of Maine & loved the roar of of our school song "The Stein Song" which Rudy Valle wrote. Someone said he went to school there & it must be true, otherwise why would he write a song about the school. Maybe somebody out there knows for sure. Either way the 1st song livened up my childhood & the other livened up my college days.

Never knew he covered this, but I've probably heard it nonetheless. It was one of those songs that would come up, by any artist that gave them a good royalty rate, on background music systems and on those "easy listening" and "beautiful music" stations people of my parent's generation tuned in, for years after the NVB version was on the charts. I do remember Vallee playing himself on "Here's Lucy" covering "She came in through the bathroom window.", if I remember correctly. I also remember eating at Valee's Steak House while vacationing in Maine, but have never known if there was any connection to Rudy Valee. Thanks for posting this.

Watching Rudy Vallee in tv show CHIPS from 1979

I knew the New Vaudeville Band imitated my distant cousin's style with their song. But I did not know he actually imitated them back by actually singing their imitative-style song. Tonight's the first I ever even heard of this particular version.
