I noticed that the frequency of customers coming back for another dog also increased as the spawn level went up. Considering how dark the game's implications are, it makes me suspect that the customers' dogs aren't living so long after they buy...

It's impressive how this game is much better at spreading the message then anything PETA ever managed to make.

Alternate Title: Manly slowly goes insane trying to stop his dogs from dying. Seriously though, this game is messed up. i'm pretty sure it's supposed to be about overbreeding or pet abuse as that is a problem.

Y'know, this is actually a very interesting message for a game. I feel like it might be about overbreeding. And how us humans breed dogs to appear cuter, with shorter legs and stumpy snouts. But they are slower, live shorter lifes and are more prone to getting sick. You notice that the level 1 dogs are way faster and don't get hungry as fast, while the later levels are slower and get hungry faster. You are basically creating pugs.

This game is just pug simulator... breeding dogs to be "cute" with giant eyes, short legs, and unhealthy as sin.

I'm glad someone is bringing attention to the fact that even though some people may find some traits (like bigger eyes, shorter noses, shorter legs, or being overweight) cute that it's not always good for the dogs.

Listening to the skeletal dogs eat was truly horrifying.

Once the dogs started merging to become "cuter" I knew exactly where the game was gonna go.

Okay before I finish this video, I'm predicting that the "breeding dogs for more cuteness" is what's going to go horribly wrong, they're gonna end up super deformed and grotesque looking and it's gonna be a commentary on how selective breeding can permanently mess up an entire dog breed's physiology. It could also be a commentary on puppy mills and that sorta shit.

i think this game is about how horrifying the world of dog breeding and other breeding is, pugs for example were not made naturally and were made to to look cute even though their faces make it hard for them to breath, their bodies causes a lot of health problems, they were made to make money and their only payment is to suffer, spider ball pythons were bred and born with brain problems making them stumble and not do things correctly making their lives hard to survive and people who don't know what's going on think it's 'cute', i don't hate any of the animals like this i just hate how they were brought into this world just to evolve to make it hard to live, it's like if babies were forced to evolve with plastic bags over their heads, man i'm not even going to touch the topic of teacup animals, sites that sell teacup dogs and their descriptions make me sad edit: i'm sorry if it's hard to read this, english is not my first language

A week late to the party, but I'd like to add that I think the Lvl. 9 dog being a "skeledog" is a representation of how some people see dogs more like an object than a living creature. In contrast to the lower level dogs (which are faster, thus seem more lively), skeletons are associated with death, or on this specific case, the lack of life: the dogs aren't life to be cherished, they're seen as trophies with huge eyes and short legs. Owners don't even care about the personality, just the looks of the trophy.

I’ve seen that “trash can ending” thing in real life. It’s horrible and the context I saw it in was due to shelter dogs having to be euthanized due to no one adopting them or helping to spay the stray dog population. This is a serious problem that an unfortunately low amount of people are addressing and taking action on.

This feels like showing us how we genetically messed up dogs. Now they suffer from a myriad of diseases. Because of ourselfish desires of just wanting cute dogs.

When he threw the dog away, I almost cried... And selling the sick ones too. Also "your customers are coming back EVERY WEEK for new dogs". The message of this game sends is so scary. And the ending.... Holy shit...

Man if you also notice in terms of puppy mills, the higher the level dog (especially level 8) they start to shake while they move around. They also just look.. miserable. Like yeah they’re cute but like they’re not as happy looking as the level 1 dogs.

Y'know, on the front cover of the book on the title page, I actually thought those were tears in the dog's eye, not highlights. Now that I think about it, it does somewhat fit the theme, even if the detail wasn't really intended ha...

This is heartbreaking. My mom and stepdad own an English Bulldog called Fudge and it's saddening to see how much health conditions they have. I don't support it at all but my stepdad really wanted an English Bulldog. The dog's former family gave him away to my mom and stepdad due to moving into a no pets allowed area. They didn't tell my mom about the dog's cleft pallette or the fact that he had to be taken into the vet to get it operated when he was a puppy but never was. It left my mom paying for the operation and getting all the medical attention the dog needed. He was practically neglected. The former family must've thought they were getting a cute flat nosed English Bulldog only to be bombarded with health problems. When the opportunity to give him away was there they took it. This is why I don't support these types of breeds that suffer. I own a moggy tabby cat named Forest and sure he isn't a pure bred cat but he's extremely healthy and happy.

This was like Can Your Pet in terms of deceptiveness, but also reminded me of that one clicker game where you eventually get bloody globs of cat fur from the money machine after someone kills the cat you were sending out to find money...that are somehow worth more than the regular money. Also this is definitely commentary on puppy mills and the severe inbreeding that causes a ton of health problems in certain dog breeds as other commenters have pointed out

I had a feeling the game was going to take this route, I kind of wish they had used some real examples of dog breeds in the design and shown how the genetic issues which cause certain dogs to be desired get worse over time (for example how pugs were bred to have flat faces which results in respiratory issues). But overall I think it's an interesting (possible?) commentary how a lot of dog breeders don't care about the issues dogs have as a result of breeding and exploit traits that are overall harmful for a breed to possess.

Rather than being about puppy mills it seems more about designer dogs and breeding traits we find pleasing but cause serious health issues, the example being stubby legs making it hard for them to walk while the larger eyes made it harder for them to eat.

Speaking of breeding dogs Did you know : breeding the same breed of a dog together have a inbreeding effects, such as weakened immune systems and more autoimmune diseases. Inbred dogs seem to get sicker from common causes more often than other dogs, such as catching colds.

Dam this game is deep dark, tells us of what happens to dogs when we just genetically inbred them for beauty, And the consequences of the genetically inbreeding dogs, like disease and even disabilities. This game is dark AF. Edit: Dam this comment grew fast.

Finally, an indie game that actually has substance. This talked about selective breeding to the point of dogs having genetic disorders for the sake of "cuteness". Also, talked about overpopulation and how we did this to dogs. This is why pugs and Chihuahuas exist.

Is the real horror the existential crisis of where artificial selection has led us today? Edit: this game did a really good job at showing some of the "cute" traits that we keep perpetuating that are actually quite harmful. The stubby little legs that corgis have cause all sorts of back problems (chrondrodysplasia), the excessive skin folds that pugs have often are not kept clean and get infected (pyoderma), the giant eyes that shih tzus have often develop glaucoma because the intraocular pressure is too great.... and breeders make BANK off of all of this. Overall interesting game!

Very elegant use of mechanics to communicate the message. The highlight for me is how the player might not notice that the dogs are getting slower if not for the need to physically walk to the food dish, allowing the lower level dogs to clearly display their speed in comparison to the higher level ones.

_This game is about inbreeding dogs for the sake of having them "purebred" and/or "cute". Purebred dogs always carry genetic defects with them as a result (such as poodles having cataracts and brachycephalic breeds having respiratory issues, like the pug), living shorter lives. Mongrels, on the other hand, live longer and are stronger, as genetic diversity means that defective genes are less likely to manifest themselves, but people aren't as interested and there are many mongrels in the streets wanting love..._

There is a breeding project out there that actually seems beneficial. They're breeding dogs with the appearance of dire wolves, a chill personality, and great health! If only all breeding projects were that responsible.

I had a feeling it would be about dog breeding going wrong. I just didn't expect skeleton dogs in the end. I used to have a British Shorthair cat. I know people find them cute because of their flat face and virtually non-existent nose, but that's just the outside. On the inside my cat was an asocial weirdo and had difficulty breathing. Rather than play, she would spend most of her time staring outside windows. I had a lot of pets but she was the only super weird one. If you want a pet, don't get pure breed animals, get yourself a mutt or mixed breed animal, they are much healthier and much happier. Also, visit an animal shelter before pet shot first, there are a lot of older animals waiting for new owners, they deserve better.

This is a really good message. It hammers in the message pretty well at the "cuter dogs = more money" part. It also shows dogs that are, in fact, not cute in any way- such as the skeleton dog or the dog covered in sores- and calls them extremely cute. This is pretty accurate to people's responses to the awful mutations some dog breeds have, like pugs. It's not cute to make their face so short they can't breathe and their eyes pop out of their sockets. It's terrifying. Imagine those same traits on a human being. Or imagine a wolf with a pug face. It's not cute, it's not happy, it's sad. Breeding pets to begin with is wrong, if there's so many in the pet trade without homes already. Inbreeding them is even worse. And inbreeding them to intentionally bring out their most unhealthy, horrific mutations.. is the worst. People tell mothers not to eat or drink or even go near MANY things just to avoid harming their child through disease and mutations. And here we are breeding dogs to be unhealthy just because it's 'cute,' and throwing away the ones that aren't cute. All dogs are adorable, even if they're the ugliest dog in the world. If you need your dog to have tiny legs and a tiny nose to love it, you don't want a dog- you want a toy. Dogs are COMPANIONS. Companions make you happy regardless of how they look. Please, if you get a dog, adopt. Same with cats, or any other animal that is possible to adopt. And when you do, please get the one that has the lowest odds of finding a home. Get the ugliest, or the oldest, or the unhealthiest- anything. Just make their life a happy one. And get your animals fixed! Even if there's no animals for it to breed with around it, especially in female cats, fixing them can eliminate some health issues. Remember, you're removing an entire body part, which means one whole body part less to get injured or catch illnesses.

Spooky game, great message! I'm really glad they didn't go over the top, or sneak in anything overly freaky, it really made the message shine through. There IS a problem with today's pet owners, and it's that they value "aw, look at how cute this is" over their pet's life. Legs so short it has trouble walking, faces so squished they have problems eating, these things are seen as *cute*, but it's a painful life for the pet everyone "wants".

I remember a time when a cute game was just that...a cute game. Nothing disturbing or horrifying about. Just a simple game that’s cute. i think this is a play on the defects that dog breeding can cause for the sake of "cuteness." It's why as you make more dogs the worse the health gets, and why their hunger diminishes faster, but as a "plus" it gets cuter features (bows, big eyes, smaller body). I'm assuming the skeleton is just an exaggerated way of saying that the dog is basically in an early grave from all the defects it has

man, I knew this game had a deeper meaning humans have been inbreeding dogs and changing them to look "cute" so much that their life has been shortened health problems and other things. The food also had something to do with it "pump them full of nutrients" basically is food that was made with chemicals to make them grow faster or slower I'm not sure what it is but it has to do with to be some type of way the food affects them. It is honestly sad seeing a healthy dog 10-40 years ago turning into these dogs that look "cute" and "tiny".
