I have always found it difficult to find a good RHD aftermarket steering setup for my Jeep XJ. Ruffstuff Specialties had previously supported our trip with frame stiffeners back in 2018 and they offered to make a RHD One Ton Steering setup for the Jeep which was fantastic and extremely good of them!
They kindly shipped the steering setup and included some heavy duty single flex adjustable Short Arms to our end destination in Northern Sweden where we got them powder coated and fitted them just in time for the winter.
I've been running them for two and a half months now and it's been like night and day for the XJ. Now even my wife Megan drives it as the steering was her biggest complaint.
Big Thanks to Ruff Stuff for the support! Below are the mods I use from them.

2 bits of advice,,1) eye pro when drilling metal is cheap insurance and 2) it is common practice in automotive industry to smack the knuckles at the tie rod ends with a ball peen until they pop loose, no special tools required 95% of the time

Just found your new channel. Liking it so far! That's awesome that Ruffstuff set you up with a great steering system for you XJ. I might have to look into those "Cure" parts.

I'm sold, went to Ruff Stuff site and the prices are good. Now I can see that you are a fan of KO2s, I run them on my CJ5.

Hi Mike. Thanks for this vid. I've been looking at their kit. How does the cure hold up over time? Do you have to replace them regularly?
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness Год назад
Its a solid kit that's going strong four years on. The cure is okay and they do wear out pretty quick. I got some big stainless washers and put them inside the cure spacers to make them stiffer. If you do that then you need to leave some room for the ball joint to move. It just takes out excessive movement. What really fixed it was flattening out the angles.

@@WorkshoptoWilderness Good idea. How often do you need to replace the bushings? I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out an optimal steering setup for my application. I want to stay low so a high steer crossover or WJ swap isn't practical. I also live in a very rainy climate so heims may suffer from corrosion, the 1 ton T-setup has tie rod roll, and the ZJ Y-setup has toe change during cycling. Looks like I just have to chose the problem I'm willing to live with and maintain it accordingly.

We are still alive and well. Been dealing with all the madness of getting new jobs, registering the Jeep in Sweden and gradually getting everything back to normal. Funnily enough I start filming again for this channel this week so I will have new videos from now on. Thanks for checking in!

Its a fabricator in the UK who makes them - www.ebay.co.uk/usr/benny4x4_ltd?_trksid=p2047675.m3561.l2559 Here is a link to his page. He makes them from time to time in batches of ten I think,

Agreed! The old steering was given to a mate who had new ball joints so I didn't care much for the old ones. Thanks for watching,

Yeah they were put in there from factory. XJ Diesels cost very little in the UK although they are becoming more of a classic these days. Thank you!

Hi Mike, shouldn’t there be just a slight bit of toe-in when aligning? 1/8-1/4 inch or so? I could be wrong
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 5 лет назад
nate5388 I’m not sure? Is that what’s recommended? I’m no expert so any info would be appreciated
@nate5388
@nate5388 5 лет назад
Workshop & Wilderness Adventures here’s a link for a TJ, but same principle applies. My numbers were off, 1/16” is about right, but no greater than 1/8”. I’m sure what you did was just fine though to get it to a shop for an alignment.

What diesel engine does you xj have? Is it the VM 2.5 td?
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 4 года назад
Yes it's the VM 2.5td.
@cerbomach7058
@cerbomach7058 4 года назад
Have it give you any problems? Specially with the cylinder heads?
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 4 года назад
The older cylinder heads are not good. I replaced my heads with after market ones which supposedly have a better heat treatment/materials. The old heads are prone to porosity and cracking between the water channel and combustion chamber which would lead to a pressurised expansion tank and burning of coolant. Saying this I know several people who run this engine with original heads and one of them is almost on 450,000 miles. He has replaced the wet liners and rings at around 300k. Its a pretty good engine, just change the oil and make any necessary mods to lower EGT.
