I had a brief career playing hook for a club team in the early 90s until I started hemorrhaging in both knees. I had only started playing so they had someone else handle the line-ins but this video would be great to show my kids what I did on the field.

@@couchrugby Brilliant videos. I am going to binge the rest. My oldest daughter is doing a year of volunteer social work in Ireland right now and was at the Leinster-Sharks game.

beginner question: what is the most important position in rugby union? seems to me like all are about equal? my guess are props, locks, fly halves perhaps.....maybe scrum half.
@iamthegreatcornholio7836
@iamthegreatcornholio7836 Год назад
or fullback?

That is a really difficult question to answer. They are all very depended on each other and if there is a weakness in one position a strong team will exploit it. The easy answer though is your Flyhalf and scrumhalf because they are the guys who control the game and have to think on their feet as well as execute the game plan. But having a strong tight 5 is just as important as those are the players that lay the foundation and give the other players in the team the platform from witch to play. So if you are bulding a team on a budget I would allocate a bit more money to those 7 positions to at least have one quality half and as many quality tight 5 players as possible.

@@couchrugby just like american football....need a good front line to win while the backs get all the headlines. scrum/fly halves are like quarterbacks and wingers are like wide receivers (speed).

can props (or any other forwards) hook the ball in scrums?
@TheAseer2020
@TheAseer2020 Год назад
I think under the current laws yes, because the ball has to be hooked my law
@couchrugby
@couchrugby Год назад
Yes anyone can hook the ball. One thing to keep in mind hooking takes away pushing power, so everyone except the hooker usually only hook the ball when it is right under the feet.

how important are scrums vs. general open play?
@couchrugby
@couchrugby Год назад
I would say they are equally important. You spend less time scrumming than general play but the time you spend scrumming has a more significant impact on the game.

Does the hooker have to throw in the lineout by law? It seems to me that if you could have one of the backs throw in the ball, then you'd have +1 big guy to push the pile forward.

Hi Andras. I like the way you think and no the hooker does not have to through it in by law. But the hooker would be a better option than a backline player because it would not be a good idea to take a backline player out of the defensive line or to remove them from your attacking formation. Also once the hooker has thrown the ball they are free to join the maul :)
