@@Tom-tp1jvAttack: Secure rucks quickly. Support players as an offload option. Clean up any dropped/messy balls while running in support. Defense: Counter ruck, jackal the ball for a turnover (risky and must be very good with ruck laws). Be a tackling machine and let teammates counter ruck.

Good overview. I can see why I was chosen as a flanker. In practice scrims I’d always go for the ball and be the first to tackle then they’re like yeah you are a flanker bud

What I appreciate most is the fact, that you explain rugby for dummies like me in a way that I can understand it. That means for me as a german whose mother tongue is not english you explain the rules clearly and you talk clearly. Thank you Couch Rugby! Good job!

yep and France generally view their flankers as 2 of the same and play them left and right rather than Open and Blind. I am happy someone is highlighting this is in the comments, I try not to overload people with info when they are still learning the basics. So having it down here for the more inquisitive viewers is great. Thankyou

Depends how tall your open side flanker is on whether he will be used

Hi Sarel :) Correct. Also the make up and balance of the other loose forwards would drive it.

Yes Flankers, particularly openside flankers cover the most ground in a game!

@@couchrugby When I played open side flanker I think I tackled the most in the entire team. Overall the jerseys of the scrum were wetter and dirtier post-game than the pretty boys in the back line post-game. After a scrum the openside flanker should be the first or second player to tackle the opposition, together with the scrum half. One of (very few) skills was that I was very fast off the scrum and could often tackle the no 9 or 10 of the other team, or at least mess up their pass. When I played blind side you are much slower off the scrum, you either have to run around back or possibly forward around the tight -5, so slower to action.

With the right spirit and attitude there are many positions available to you - and for what its worth when I was 13 I still resembled a human child before my Neanderthalization had begun! As a flanker you have to love to tackle and have good eyes for reading the game. Opposing players may try to trick as to where they are passing or running and make a dummy move - they will look one way and pretend to pass - ignore their eyes but look at their hips - like Shakira sings the hips don't lie - they show the intending direction. In scrums, especially when playing open side, tilt your head so you can see the opposing ball - when it is lifted off the ground you should dash forward for a tasty scrum half snack ! Good luck!@@JasonMofokeng
