Hockey players are straight up warriors. The speed they're traveling at impact is crazy. They're generally not at large as football and rugby players, but who cares. They play through pain and injury in a sport easily as physical as either football or rugby, in a season with far more games. Difficult sport to follow on television due to the speed of play and small size of the puck, but a great one to watch in the arena.

NHL players tend to be larger than most nfl players excluding linemen an ideal NHL player is about 6’3 220LBS where a large number of nfl player don’t even hit 6’0 or 200LBS

Yurri Ideal and average are two different things. The NFL average for all teams and all players is 6'2.5" and 247lbs. The average for NHL players is 6'1" and 200lbs. Of course, there are some NHL players who are very tall - I believe the tallest is 6'9". But an average is an average - some being greater than, some lesser.

I feel like without prior knowledge of hockey you don't really understand how bad these hits are. The knee on knee doesn't look bad at all, but really that's how you put someone in the retirement home.

Also people that don’t understand the speed on skates and also the difference between hitting from your feet and hitting from skates full body. It just can’t compare. Not only can you not hit the same speed , but you’re limited to how you can even hit somebody. It usually just comes down to just bumping them hard or it being a hard tackle meaning you just grab them on impact and pull them down. The impact itself isn’t knocking them over. In hockey you’re straight up only using the force of going into somebody to knock them down. You almost never see that in things like rugby. People are knocked off balance more than just being overpowered. Or seemingly hitting a brick wall. Not saying rugby isn’t brutal or football. They just aren’t even in the same category. Hockey is one of a kind and I think it’s better to respect it as just that rather than having to decide which is better or worse. It’s kinda like comparing crashes in f1 to go karting. Hitting a wall just isn’t the same

They do a lot of side steps and jukes in hockey, more so then hitting. Very skilled sport that has been labeled as "brutal" by most people that dont watch it. I have been a fan for over 20 years ( I am also from San Diego where Hockey almost doesnt exist) and the reason I love it is for the skill. Try checking out Datsyuk, he has the best side steps you will see in hockey.

The thing you also have to realize is that these guys are going about 20-30mph (32-48kph), and they land on solid ice. You often forget that when you watch it on TV or RU-vid, but when you see it in real life you realize how much those hits must hurt.

Speed skaters can hit 30 mph, hockey player skater around 20-25 mph at full speed, which is still wicked fast. If both players are moving at each other at full speed, you are looking at a 50 mph impact. Nasty.

As a high school hockey player I can confirm when we are going at full speed (15-20 mph I would guess) it does not feel good to get hit. The worst is when you get hit square in the chest because all that force sends you right to the ice.

BoredDan Hitting take little to no skill, just size. It's funny, the average hockey game does not have many big hits or fights, it seems like the teams that are less skilled and not so good are the big hitting and fighting teams. I am not impressed with the hits and fights. Anyone can do that.
@BoredDan7
@BoredDan7 6 лет назад
I was commenting on how hitting doesn't showcase skill. Also I wouldn't say it takes no skill. It does take a lot of athleticism to get good hits on players at that level though. They're fast and they're strong, getting a good hit on an NHL player is not something most people could do. That said it is the less interesting part of the game but it also adds a level of immediacy to things. You have to really watch yourself, where you are, where the opponent is, and where your are putting the puck. Nothing is worse then giving someone a suicide pass because you weren't heads up enough.
@ryanball2754
@ryanball2754 6 лет назад
BoredDan, you make good points. I guess I just don't think it helps teams enough to get a type of player who is just physical and will hit anyone that comes close to them.
@BoredDan7
@BoredDan7 6 лет назад
No player in today's game is just physical. The depth of modern lineups is insane. The game today is faster than ever, but that also means that when hits happen they are hard as hell. You also don't need to get guys just to hit. I mean the phisicality of a lot of top players is already high. Hell Ovie is seen a pretty well a pure goal scorer but he plays very physical and doles out a lot of hits, and he does it well. That said, when I look for highlights big hits is one of the lowest on my list of interesting videos. Hell hits are most interesting in the context of the rest of the play. Personally though I love videos like the Sydney Crosby edgework one. Whether or not you like the guy, the power, balance, and control he has when skating and cornering is a thing of beauty.

It’s funny when he said that they aim for the head and in my experience of playing hockey we don’t aim for the head we aim for the shoulder or chest it may look like we do because someone had their head down but no ones intensions are to go out there and hurt someone especially now you can get several game suspensions. Also it’s called the ice not the field.

And no one really wants a fight so it’s usually just avoided and you can always tell if someone goes for the head on purpose

I know some of those hits. You just watched several talented athletes get their bodies permanently damaged, many on illegal hits. Some of those less flashy hits are there because they caused life-threatening or career-ending injuries. That Lindros fellow you showed on slow motion with "side step action" went from leading his team to the finals and being chosen as the 54th best player in the history of the NHL, to a very pale man lying in a hotel tub with a collapsed lung and permanent damage from multiple concussions in less than a year. He was a tough, highly skilled 6'4" 240lbs athletic powerhouse of a man whose career never recovered because he would start getting severe concussion symptoms from much lesser tackles. It's okay to watch&enjoy big hits, but you should not laugh as light heartedly as you did at men losing their health and their livelihood.

As a long time nhl fan, hits like this don't happen every game. In fact, it's not a super common occurrence. Most of these clips are from past seasons. Now players get heavy fines, suspensions and other dicipline for hits or elbows that target the head. Most of these clips are clean hits, but a few of them should be called for charging/boarding or intentional blow to the head. Loved the vid mate, keep me comin

James Anderson the only reason hits like this don’t happen every game is because there are so many games, but it happened very often. There could be 5 games without a lethal hit but a game with 10 hits like these. It happens a lot and these were not dirty. Just look at nhl season hits for every year and you will see how often they really occur. Its the game of hockey

Okay, about 1/4 of the hits at 4:15-6:00 the puck is nowhere near them and there's buck-wild stuff like going low to hit right above the knee mid-ice there as well. That's not clean, it's not even hockey. Several of these hits resulted in game misconduct penalties, fights as soon the guy left the penalty box, as well as various length suspensions back in the day as well. (Mostly one or two games suspensions in the older clips. You pretty much had to physically assault a ref, use your stick in a fight, or do a blindsided tackle after the whistle and far from the puck to get a long suspension before mid-2000s.)

Connor Mcdavid ( 21 years old and already one of, if not, the best current player) Patrick Kane ( This buddy co-ran a dynasty with a sharp shooting pair of silky mits) Alex Ovechkin (absolutely crazy shot, scores a lot) Rasmus Dahlin (#1 Pick in the latest draft, scouted as a generational player) Sydney Crosby (best player for the last decade) Johnny Gaudreau (Plays for my city's team 5'9 160lbs but is very difficult to touch. very exciting to watch) ****WAYNE GRETZKY***** The most dominant athlete in sports history. If you didn't count any of his goals he would still have more points (goals and assists combined) than 2nd place all time.

HUGE hockey fan and skating coach by profession. Rugby players are nothing to sneeze at but hockey players are moving at incredible speeds and when you factor in that the average NHL puck travels at 90mph (that’s not the fastest speed mind you) there is a lot of things in Hockey that makes it a true gladiator sport. If you want an idea for another reaction video try worst injuries in the NHL. Clint Malarchuck and Richard Zenik to be exact. A not on these particular hits, many of them are LEGAL in Hockey. The biggest rule is both of your feet cannot come off the ground and you can’t life your arms. Hockey is as much about being able to take a hit as it is about being able to give one. As you can tell from this video the worst hits come when you aren’t looking. You may only legally hit someone who has Possession of the puck so what tends to happen is the person delivering the hit will come in from the blind side or when someone is looking away. Love the video!

the player who made that side move or duke, I believe you called it, was # 88, Eric Lindros, one of the games greatest players but because of hits like this, his career was cut short due to concussions, like so many others. The player who administered the hit was Scott Stevens, possibly the games biggest head hunter. Thankfully the game has evolved and it's friendlier to the talented players who can skate like the wind and handle a puck like Messi does a football and with a deadly accurate shot...If you liked Pavel's video, you'll love the game now.

Also, the reason why some of them try to continue to keep skating to the bench after they get crushed is so their team can maintain possession of the puck. If the player lays hurt on the ice - the game will stop and might ruin an odd number rush their team was on. Team players.
@newman8r45
@newman8r45 6 лет назад
One thing to know is that most of the time they don't intend to target the head, but a lot of the biggest hits are because the player doesn't see it coming, and this is often because they have their head down, looking at the puck instead of ahead of them. There are rules against head contact, but a lot of the hits end up contacting the head due to poor body position on the offensive player.

Crazy true fact about NHL hockey: guys will regularly play through injuries. And when they get injured, they only report an “upper body injury” or “lower body injury” publicly out of fear that other teams will figure out where they got hurt and target the recovering area as soon as they’re healthy enough to play. But seriously, I personally know of a player that played through a broken foot. They would inject him to numb the pain, but it still hurt so bad that he threw up. He still got out there and played, which is batshit crazy.

Hits like that happen occasionally but used to happen way more. Hockey has gone from a defensive game to an offensive game. These kinds of hits usually happen in big rivalry games (e.g. Boston vs. Montreal, Calgary vs. Edmonton, New York Rangers vs. New Jersey), but there are still some MONSTER hits in regular games. Those boards hurt. I am a referee and I've been run into (accidentally, I'm sure) and had to leave the game a couple of times.

@ 6:16 and the hit on the “juke” guy at 6:43 were both career ending hits by the same Hall of Famer known for his lockdown Defense with ability to hit like a big rig truck. Those hits actually changed the league rules to stop aiming for the head and to not hit from another player’s blind side. Today, those would be a major penalty, a fine, and unpaid suspension since the suspended player’s salary goes to a trust fund set up to financially support all injured players, i.e. former star player and champion Joe Murphy who went mentally unstable and homeless due to multiple head traumas and/or painkillers he had to take when he played in NHL.

And just so you know, any penalties that a player takes are served by him in the Penalty Box unless for some reason he's not able to. For example if he's thrown out of the game, can't play anymore, or something like that. When goalies take penalties, they get to stay on the ice even though there's a backup goalie, and the coach gets to pick someone to serve their penalty for them in the Penalty Box.
