I just played my final year of highschool football and was looking for another outlet to channel my aggresions. Rugby was a perfect choice and i love both games =)
They're actually showing part of this years tournament on tv this sunday at 5 on ABC. It's catching on slowly. It'll probably never be as popular as American football but it could certainly become a fairly major sport.
I agree. I played both collegiate D1 football and good club rugby and while they share many skills, rugby forced me to run 4 miles a game -- much more conservation of energy involved, much more endurance training in the background. Football was a combination of powerlifting and 40y dash sprint training.
Guys check it out in person, this February 9-10 in San Diego. For more info check out USASevens . com It's a crazy event and you will definitely have a good time. Two days of rugby madness in one of America's premier downtown settings.
football(soccer) is the best sport officially. Football is the most complicated and most watched, most well balanced between physically and skillfully and most exciting sport. Football(soccer) is Art and only divine sport on the planet.
that's an opinion...part of American football's appeal is the tension that builds up as you move into scoring position. For most of us American football fans, greater tension = greater intrinsic reward when your team does score.
Sorry guys, I know a few of you are looking for the music, I made this on an old computer which is no longer in service, I've been looking to track it down and as soon as I do I will post it. I read all the comments, keep them coming!
Rugby is contact soccer. Lateral and lateral and run and lateral and run. American football is a live chess match. The defense is actually set in front of you and your team and you have to "strategically" break down the defense in order to score.
I would also like to add that the reason that American football players wear pads is because we are big, heavy, healthy men. The kinetic energy produced by a big man running at high speed is incredible. Also people actually get hit in football, while rugby is more wrestling style. However, both sports are manly sports and deserve props.
that depends on the situation. Adding to what LeathalWorksInc said, if you have a lot of momentum and the tackler doesn't wrap up and take you to the ground, you can get up (i THINK as long as the ball doesn't touch the ground, in which case you have to place it on the ground, stand up, then pick it up. I THINK)
Rugby needs to be more nationalised here in the states. This sport is too damn good not to be mainstreamed like other sports, like Pro Basketball, or Pro Baseball. We would enjoy watching this.
Here's how American football was created, they were playing Rugby against some folks from another country, and the other team complained that they threw the ball forwards, to which they replied, "duh, that the direction we're trying to get to" and at the end of the game they declared themselves the winners of the world series.
I stand corrected. i was thinking of only rugby union... my bad. Rugby League is a little more relaxed when it comes to tackling, but rugby union you have to wrap your arms around your opponent for it to be a legal tackle, you can't legally shoulder charge/push someone (people do it anyway, by the touchline)
Rugby is a man's sport. Im not trying to degrade any other sports, im just trying to say that its not safe to play rugby until you are a fully developed man.
Greetings from Georgia! (The state not the country) I want to play Rugby but I am not that great of a tackler and I am not that fast but I am pretty strong. Is their a position for me? Please reply!
@Maplebangeek it depends...They could come out with a win sometimes...but USA reach there full potential in sevens rugby more than in a full length match
if the other team tackles some1 they can get up and take the ball from them as long as no1 from the other team is there aswell. They can get the ball if the other team drops it, or if they kick it they can catch it..or they can intercept but u hav to be careful with that because u cud be seen as offside..thats basically the ways to get the ball
Rugby might be #2 in the world to futbol, but rugby has grace and power unlike futbol. Rugby has some of the best athletes in the world and they drink with the opposing team after the match. Cheers!
I play rugby and i'm an american. I actually prefer rugby over football, because of the brutality of constantly running and no pads, Rugby is just the greatest sport in World!!!
Having played both rugby and football at a relatively high level, it's impossible to deny that football players do "hit harder". However, you can't ignore the fact that football player also wear huge amounts of padding which allows the high-impact hits to happen- for both players. Hit for hit, it's hard to compare, but I'd sooner get tackled on the football field than the rugby pitch. Also, it's incorrect to state that rugby players only get hit when they have the ball, don't forget about rucks
I don't know, I just see it differently. they give you pads so you won't get killed and you don't always have a 50 yard pass. You're right about the no blocking part, but at the same time, think of the running back, and what he has to endure. It's not exactly easy to break through the L.o.S. AND the coverage in the backfield. The rucking in rugby isn't really a factor, either. Am. football has linemen to take care of that. Also, both sports get the ball forward just in different ways.
well i think it depends how u conduct the tackle. sometimes players do a high tackle which hurts u in various ways. or they just lift u up and do a spearhead with your head hitting the ground first.
@gwl1983 Baseball and Basketball are both sports usually thought to be created in America. Baseball is widely popular in South and Central America as well as Asia. And Basketball is on the rise in Europe and Some Asian Countries.
@TheRealChadMustang You came 2nd at the olympics to china, and a 3rd of your athletes were born abroad. Britain with 1/5 of the population came 4th and our athletes are actually british.
@ThatNoob...etc. You DON'T have to get the ball between the "polls" - it's poles, or posts - you can score a TRY anywhere in the opposing teams "end-zone" by, as you say, touching the ground - actually applying downward pressure (with the ball). And it's worth 5 points, not A point.
@ThePatriotsMan Have you played rugby on an actual team? Cause I have both football and rugby, and in my opinion, tackling is the only thing they have in common.
