The bolt is as it came from Ruger. Nothing has been done to it except shooting regularly and cleaning. I think the issue is folks haven't been taught to run a bolt. It's forward and back, not up-back-forward-down... It needs to be run "smartly" and fingers are not used. Inward pressure keeps the bolt knob secure in the palm of your hand and mitigates any binding.

Your advice regarding the action was spot on. I tend to be hard on everything (bull in a china shop syndrome) so I usually make an effort to go easy on my high value gear. Manhandling the bolt some and making it two motions instead of four has helped. I'm going to run it some more as I only have a few hundred rounds through her and see what happens. I will do a follow up video too.

2:02 someone please show that to nutnfancy... Maybe he will realize the problems he's having are user error... You sir are a master of the bolt and I think my hair stood up seeing you shoot this gun the way it was meant to be shot. Nutnfancy had his sister reply to my comment and then block me because I called him out on bad handling of the bolt. What a joke.

Haha i kind of stoped watching Nutnfancy after that shitt, i kind of like his styles of videos, but damn is he a turd with a bolt rifle. And whats up with all his shitty scopes, always a shitty 3-9 or what not.

I like those polymer magazines. Its good to see someone who knows how to run a bolt

Thanks man. I usually hunt in the deep woods so this handy rifle should be perfect with just the iron sights. Around seventy yards is the longest shot I can get in the woods. I got the metal five round mag for hunting and it works great. I do agree with you, the more rounds I shoot the more I like it. Wish I had the open country y'all have so I could really see how I could do at long range. Take care and happy shooting!

Wow. You blew my mind with those 'plinking' rounds in a .308. I'm super curious about that concept because opens up small game for the .308. That proves this rifle is capable of being a great all-rounder. As for your bolt handling ... inspiring.

Well done Ray. The Ruger GSR iron sights are fairly course so I'd say you are producing some very respectable accuracy. I sure have a lot of fun with mine. It has been one of those rifles that that more I shoot it, the better I like it. I've put thousands out rounds down range through it and I'm still discovering something new it is capable of.

The two subsonic cast bullets I use are the Lyman 311008 (115gr) plain base. Inexpensive accurate fun. The other is the Lyman 311284 (220 grains) It will take a gas check but I haven't decided if it really needs it for the subsonic loads. Seems to shoot very well either way. I do use a GC when I push super sonic. Excellent bullet in the GSR. My GSR seems to like the bullets sized to .309" I use a small amount of W231 for those loads. Data available elsewhere on the web.

It has probably smoothed up with use but it was good new too. I think a lot of the knock about Ruger's smoothness is folks not running the action 'smartly'. They tend to lift the bolt, pull it back, bind it up on the forward throw. It should be two motions, forward and back. Keep the pressure inward and it (and every other Mauser action) will run fast.
@JanoSFX
@JanoSFX 3 года назад
Can you please elaborate on your advice “keep the pressure inward”? BTW many thanks for this video, it has been one of the reasons I committed to getting a scout rifle (...and recently acquired a Steyr Scout...).

WOW, I have to say you really know how to handle a bolt action rifle. So many you tube video's show guy's un-shouldering the rifle as they chamber the next round. Good work Sir, show em how it's done in Bristol fashion or done properly. It should be a natural reflex.

The technique of running the bolt seems to be not quite the "palming" technique and also not quite the "between forefinger and thumb" technique. More like a hybrid should I say. Open hand palming the bolt is slow to get back to the trigger and it needs more work than using the traditional forefinger and thumb technique. I do think it's in everybody's best interest to learn how to a) run the bolt quickly and smoothly and b) get back to the trigger as quickly as possible after reloading the next round. And yes, I heard from another RU-vidr who runs bolt gun regularly and quickly about how it's backwards and forwards with no pause. He might disagree of how you can the bolt quickly with this rifle (he complained how the GSR isn't smooth enough; he does have a background shooting Lee-Enfields, though), but he won't disagree that it's not a bad technique.

I too found my best groupings at 50 yards with my Ruger Scout (using iron sights) were with Federal Fusion 165 grain. I spent a lot of money on different brands and weights. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that prefers the FF 165. Cheers.

fantastic video, i am really enjoying my GSR, I recently got a hold of the polymer version. great rifle, the bolt smooths up considerably with use, for those wondering about bolt issues.. as with any firearm, the action will sort of self-polish and wear in. all the rugers i have had, 10/22s, 22/45, and the GSR have been this way.. the 10/22 receiver smoothed up with use, field stripping the 22/45, etc.. you gotta use your firearm and break it in, clp it, etc.. and it will serve you well. the GSR is definitely capable of being a sub MOA rifle with the right load, and optics ofc. try out the buffalo bore sniper 175 SMKs if you want a good long range factory cartridge. FGGM 175s will work great as well.

Love the little rifle! Averaging 1.5" groups with iron sights at 50 yards. I'm sure it's capable of better, but I'm not ha ha. Best shooting ammo so far is Federal Fusion 165 gr. best group was sub moa with worst group at 1.25 inches. This was from a Caldwell lead sled at fifty yards and iron sights. NATO ammo and various premium ammo averaged groups from 1.25 inches to 2.0 inches. Very pleased with the rifle. Think I will forego the scope for now. Great video btw.

It's been a while so I don't remember for sure. It was one of the cast bullet plinking-small game loads I use. Inexpensive, fun and accurate.

Also meant to say that in an article by Brian Pearce in the recent Rifles magazine. His best groups were with Nosler 165 grain ballistic tip ( hunting). He also got good groups with the fusion ammo.

I just got mine and put only 100 rounds through it. And i fall in more love with it ever time i pull the trigger its a really great platform and as for effective range if you put some optics on it, easy 400 yards+ out of the box with the factory iron sights i was having fun hitting 1and 2 liter bottles at 90 yards. If you can find one id say get it. its my first rifle and gonna be my only one for quite some time lol

Cheap 1" nylon webbing on some quick detach Uncle Mike swivels. There are much better slings out there. One day I'll buy one.

I just did my own small review of the scout myself. Im def a fan of your videos thus far, and recently started rolling my own subsonics. What other molds are you casting and are you resizing, lubing, gas checking them? Id love to have some quiet recoil free plinking rounds. My friend is a comercial diver and can get all the free lead i want :)

Good Shooting Sir, really well done! Greetings from Austria / Europe. Ps.: I`ll buy a ruger scout - but not the export version with the 18,1 inch stainless-barrell. A friend of mine - US and Austrian citizenship - will bring me one from the US. I can`t wait to hold the GSR in my hands.

Did you do any bolt or bolt raceway work on your rifle? I see many people struggling with a very rough bolt on this model and yours is the only one I see working like its glass smooth.
