I love my LCR 327, IMO it is THE best caliber for a concealed carry snub revolver. First time shooters are surprised how little recoil it has for the performance. Has the velocity to expand to over half an inch, great penetration, low recoil and greater capacity. Only downfall is price and availability but totally worth it.

+Bushcraft1974 I live in Portugal. Recently a driver in Lisbon shot and killed an attacker who was threatening him through his car window with a crowbar. The gun was legal and he had a CCW permit. The cops patted the legal shooter on his back and sent him on his way. When asked if the armed citizen would be charged with anything the police said "No. He had a gun for a reason, and he used it appropriately."

One of the good things about this gun is it can also fire the 32 H&R Mag that came out in the early 80's. My wife carries that round and will not shoot a larger caliber. So, the 327 gives you the capability to shoot all of those lessor rounds. Might make it easier for those more recoil sensitive.

I'm a 32 nut who started out as a poor newlywed with a RG mod 30 and built up my arsenal of 32's over the last 44 years. I have several RG's, Heritage Arms SA, Ruger SA, Ruger DA, Marlin Lever Action, and now. Henry LA. Oh, I also have KelTec's P32. Started reloading in those early years and have a variety of bullet moulds and thousands of pieces of brass so that I can reload anything I want in any variation. I figured up once during the ammo scarcity around 2013 that I was shooting 32 long and 32 HR with my cast bullets for about 4 cents a round. I had stocked up on powder and primers before the price jumps and am still using those components for loading plinking rounds for use with any gun in my safe. The Fed 327 Mag now also gives me a CCW that I am confident with and can affordably practice with using the smaller 32 cartridges which don't cost very much to shoot up.

Thanks for great teaching on the advantages of being able to shoot 32 magnum, 32 S&W Longs as viable self defense options from revolvers chambered for this 327 magnum. For many it’s too much to handle in the lightweight snubbies, but a pleasure to shoot in .32 magnum & longs. Hand injuries and/or arthritis can limit how much recoil a person can handle.

@jdnotariano

The .327 Federal Magnum is making a comeback for good reason. This is the perfect small revolver round. You don't give up anything to a full sized pistol cartridge in knockdown power or recoil, yet in a small lightweight carry revolver that is more reliable and more powerful than a pocket auto. Very few CCW "pocket" guns are without compromises, but this .327 LCR may just be one.
@lapdawg60
@lapdawg60 5 лет назад
I was just turned on to this particular size cartridge, and for the same reasons you just cited. As H45 mentions in his review, one extra round in in a mag holding 16 or 17 may not be as big a deal, but in a 5 vs. 6 round revolver, the importance of that extra round becomes more important. Add the stopping power with less recoil in an LCR, and I can see how it could be a very good choice as a CCW weapon.
@Dan-oi3xt
@Dan-oi3xt 6 лет назад
I read a lot of predictions that the 327 Federal Magnum would not catch on back when it was introduced, but it seems to be such a versatile round with its compatibility with other .32 rounds that it seems like a perfect match for snub nose revolvers like the LCR.
@1guyin10
@1guyin10 8 лет назад
I really like that cartridge. Out of a short barrel like the LCR the .327 Federal Magnum will produce ballistics roughly similar to a 9 mm and only slightly trailing the .357 Magnum. It really does have an impressive punch. Having that extra round makes it something to consider when buying a small revolver. As soon as I get a chance one of these is going to find its way into my holster.

@knifedance2402 3 года назад
@@sparky_-mf2cs No actually, there are some .327 factory loads that beat some more common .357 loads in terms of energy ft-lbs. Of course, terminal effect isn’t entirely dependent upon that. Speer’s most common .327 loading is a 100 grain bullet that does 1400 fps out of the LCR. That’s velocity consistent with or outstripping the majority of the more common .357 loads, and with a bullet that isn’t all that much lighter than .357 loads achieving similar speeds. So to say .327 only slightly trails .357 is technically correct with that in mind. That makes sense when you consider how ridiculously high-pressure .327 is even compared to .357 and the like. Aside from that disadvantage; .327 revolvers have higher capacity, generate around 30-40% less felt recoil, and have excellent versatility with their ability to chamber easier to shoot and/or more common/cheaper ammunition when needed. Can’t handle full-house .327? Load it with a hot .32 H&R. Need to plink? .32 S&W Long. Teaching a new shooter to handle revolvers and don’t want to bother with horrible rimfire trigger pulls? .32 S&W. .357 is an excellent cartridge, but the .327 is going to be better for most people in most situations.

Enjoy your videos Sir. I read LOTS of the comments and there is almost nothing in the way of ballistics comparisons, though there are questions asking for it. So I thought I'd put something down. Would like to note I have the 32 Fed Mag in a SP101. Also have a 38 Super Auto and 9mm, all calibers I'm going to use for comparison. Using Ballistics 101's info, and specifically info for Buffalo Bore ammo (Buffalo Bore to get a sense of the upper power reaches for each caliber) 327 Fed Mag.......567 Ft/Lbs energy 9mm +P+............500 Ft/Lbs energy 38 Super Auto.....537 Ft/Lbs energy 40 SW..................582 Ft/Lbs energy 45ACP +P............543 Ft/Lbs energy So you can see the 327 puts more energy into the target than the most powerful variant of 9mm and is right up there with a 40 SW. Is more powerful than a standard 45 ACP and still bests the 45 ACP +P. So a very strong round and the recoil remains very controllable. That you can use all 32s (32 short, 32 long, 32 H&R and the 327) makes it a very versatile little gun.

I bought one of these a while back after watching this video... it's a real powerhouse with the top-end 327 federal magnum loads... not QUITE as powerful or hard to handle as the 357 magnum version, PLUS it has one extra round as Hickok45 stated. Also, the ability to shoot 32H&R magnum, and the 32 S&W cartridges make it very flexible, and the 32 S&W rounds are VERY easy to manage, good for a newer shooter to learn snub nose revolvers with... Mom carries the 357 magnum version (loads it with 38special) in her purse and she has no trouble with the 38 special... but THIS gun, with 1 extra round and some of the "milder" 327 magnum carry loads (or even 32H&R magnum) is easily comparable to 38special +P but with 1 extra round. Anyway, it's a fun gun and one of the few revolvers I own (I favor the semi-auto handguns personally).

The .32 ACP (AKA 7.65mm Browning in Europe) is a semi-rimmed cartridge, and was designed to work in autos, as well as revolvers chambered in .32 S&W, .32 S&W Long, and by extension .32 H&R and .327 Federal. Sometimes you can find very inexpensive bulk .32 ACP, and it makes great range ammo, or low recoil training ammo for the recoil shy.

@@MFurey It will load and fire fine, the narrow rims will sometimes allow the extractor star to hop over them, so when ejecting you always want to apply steady force with the muzzle up to allow gravity to assist in ejection. .327 is indeed a great round. I doubt it will ever catch on with great steam, but for those that do own/carry they are well armed. Ballistically it gives wound cavitation on par with most 9mm +P loads, albeit with a little less penetration depth. My backup/auxiliary pistol to my Glock 32 has always been a little snub; previously a chiefs special and then an aluminum airweight in .38 +P. I switched to the .327 snub to get that extra round and after seeing a single shot drop a ~150lb hog with ease at 30yds from a Ruger 101. Recoil with my carry loads is about on par with a hot .38 spl, but there are also some decent .32 HR mag loads that offer less recoil. Additionally, you can also shoot .32 S&W or even .32 ACP (using moon clips) for target shooting which makes it feel like a .22 Mag/.22 LR as far as recoil. Overall it's a neat little platform and especially if you reload, a fun and practical range gun as well.

This is a cool offering from Ruger because the ,327 is a very effective revolver cartridge. Very controllable recoil for fast, accurate follow up shots, the extra capacity mentioned by Hickok, and all the terminal ballistics of a hot 9mm or .38 +P. A few years back on the way home from the range with my brother in law a young buck ran into the road and was hit by the truck. The deer seemed to have a broken back as it could not get up but it was still breathing & trying to roll around and such so to end its suffering he shot it with his full size GP which was loaded with some Georgia Arms JHP .327 Mag and one shot to the base of the neck caused instant expiration. (The meat was the put to good use) Definitely more power than .38.

It's actually more of a defensive load than anything, and the .327 was being carried by my brother in law for that purpose. We weren't out hunting, we were just driving and the deer ran into the road. Rather than let it sit there and suffer, he put it down with the .327. I doubt this caliber is legal for hunting medium game such as white tail, but it worked in a pinch. I've also seen a similar situation in which a Glock 23 chambered in .40 had to be used to dispatch an injured deer. I'm sure .327 Fed would do ok against small game/varmints as a hunting round, especially if they offer longer barrel platforms, but its main purpose as far as I know was against two legged threats as a means to keep most of the power of a .357 magnum but with less recoil and higher round count.

Hickock, I hadn't considered this cartridge in a lever action rifle until you mentioned it in this video. I like that idea very much. A Henry or Marlin in .327 would be great fun. I've got the Ruger SP101 chambered in 327. It's an easy cartridge to recommend. We don't see a lot of new firearms chambered in .32 anymore and it's nice to see it making a comeback.

Yep, the more I read or see about the 327 federal mag the more I want one, or two. I've been thinking of purchasing a 2" or 3" SP101 for conceal carry, since my GP100 with 4.2" barrel is too large to easily conceal in warmer weather. I was planning on an SP101 in 357 mag, but probably carry it with .38 +p ammo. Finding out that the 327 has comparable power to low to moderate 357 ammo but with reduced recoil, AND an extra round capacity is a very sound argument for adding yet another cartridge to my ammo locker instead of just sticking with a cartridge i already have. Also it looks like the 32 h&r mag is comparable to 38 +p, and 32 we long is close to 38 spl, and all the 32's work in a 327, except 32acp which is not or miss from gun to gun

I appreciate your review and observation of the .327 Federal Magnum ammunition and the LCR chambered for it. I have read a bit about it and wondered if it might be a viable consideration as a secondary (read as offhand carry) piece. From what I understand, at personal defense ranges, it packs a punch in the neighborhood of .357 and in the smaller revolvers gives the shooter an additional round of capacity, as you noted. I, too, wonder if a lever action carbine - or, perhaps a modern Inland M1 Carbine - chambered in .327 Federal Magnum wouldn't have some appeal as a plinker/utility gun. Thanks for sharing this.

I really like my LCR in .327, but quite a kick in that load; so I use Buffalo Bore .32SW hardcast bullet. You get the penetration we need and there is little to no recoil for fast follow up shots.

This is the LCR I've been waiting for Ruger to come out with. I've fired the .357 version which is manageable but not fun at all. Not quite .357 power but a lot less recoil. The energy is very similar to 9mm at similar bullet weights. The extra round is the icing on the cake.

.327 Fed Mag is a great cartridge. Loaded up to 45,000 PSI, 10,000 PSI higher then the .357 Mag. Ballistics are very similiar to .357 Mag with less recoil. Great advantage is you can fire .32 S&W, .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Mag, .32 ACP, and .327 Fed Mag. The American Eagle 100 gr Soft Points are real hot. I have the Taurus M327, and the Ruger New Blackhawk in .327 Fed Mag (8 rounds). Load these small .327's with .32 S&W Long and they are extremely soft shooters. Ammo is expensive, if more companies start making more options in .327 I'm sure the ammo cost would come down. A lever gun chambered in .327 Fed Mag would be a great addition to the line. Any one slightly interested should contact both Henry and Rossi regarding making a a lever action in .327. The more people that ask the better the chance someone will make one. Ruger also has a Single Seven in .327 mag for anyone interested.

I bought a used SP101 327 a few few years back and really like it. it lives in my wife's nightstand and she does well shooting it. My only complaint has been cost of ammo. 327, 32h&r, and 32swl are available online but are not cheap. I'm hoping that the chambering of the LCR in 327, as well as the reintroduction of the SP101 327 (albeit with a longer barrel) will make these cartridges more readily available and lower the cost a little bit.

Welcome back with comments and insight. Fun design. I have only shot a 327 at the range using a friend's he bought for his wife. I have two Ruger LCR's in 22 and 357 magnum and they are effective and fun to shoot. I included a laser that really helps with hip shooting if you need a "get off me" option. I tend to use them in urban and range plinking, and my GP100 in 357 in rural settings.

I own a first generation GP 100 4" 327 federal mag. I grew up on revolvers and when I saw the 7 shot capacity I couldn't pass it up. It shoots well.the trigger is crisp and as you mentioned very little stacking in the double action pull. The original configuration was with the Hogue Monogrip. I changed back to the original GP 100 two tone rosewood and rubber. It offers better control in my case. Overall it shoots whatever you feed it in the 32 cal range. The only round I have not shot yet is the 32 HR magnums. Great fun and as also mentioned a viable cartridge for multiple tasks. Thanks for the great review!!

I think this might be the best CCW for a lot of people. my first criteria for a defensive weapon is reliability; for that reason revolvers get the nod over semis. for concealing, size/weight needs to be a consideration. a 357 is a great defensive round, but not manageable for most people in a CCW package. as far as the price/availability of ammo, that's entirely tied to the demand

Revolvers chambered for the .327 Federal will shoot five different cartridges. The 327, 32 H&R Mag, 32 S&W Long,32 S&W, as well as the .32 ACP due to the fact that the .32 ACP is a semi-rimmed case.

Moral of the story- when ya release a round in the middle of a war and the only ammo out there comes in 20 packs at over a buck a round. if and when ya can find it- people loose interest fast. "Do ya got any 327 mag?" 'Ya I got 357' "No I said 327" 'Never heard of it' And they make you feel like a jackass for asking about a round the gun experts never heard of. AND it really is a great round in a lot of great guns!!! The ability to fire 32 acp, 32 s&w short and long , 32 h&r mag and 327 Fed Mag mean ya are gonna find something ya like. Get one!!!!

I was skeptical of the cartridge at first , thinking of it as a niche caliber but I bought one at a local gun show and was very surprized at the accuracy . plenty of power for a woods walk and , I think, capable of taking out coyotes and feral pigs at reasonable ranges . I am now on the lookout for a ruger SP 101 with 4.6 barrel .

Thanks for this video. I actually believed, before watching this video, that the .327 Federal Magnum had gone the same route as the H&R .32 Magnum. In other words been pretty much dropped by firearms and ammo manufacturers AND the buying public (lets not discuss what the :gun press" might have had to do with it). I've circled the subject of buying a .32Mag/.327 Mag for years now but never pulled the trigger so to speak because the weapons chambered for the round(s) failed to grab my attention unlike the round(s) that DID! I would buy lever action rifles in Winchester 92 or Marlin 94 configuration and a (maybe more than one) Colt's clone in .32 Mag/.327 Mag in a heart beat if they were available. They would make excellent small to (light) medium game hunting combos and I bet, that in the absence, or at least scarcity of 32-20s, they would make pretty fair Cowboy Action shooters and just fun as the dickens plinkers to boot. Again, thanks for an excellent video on an overlooked and under-chambered round and a handgun that I, at least, had no idea even existed.

Thanks for another great review! My wife just bought one since she has trouble with the recoil of the LCR .38 Special. Today I tested 3 different rounds in the gun. The .32 Long is very easy to shoot, recoil wise I'd rate it somewhere along the lines of a .22 mag. The .32 H&R Mag has quite a bit more power but is very easy to manage. The .327 Mag (with full-power rounds) packs one heck of a punch. The grips do a good job of absorbing the recoil but these rounds aren't the best for target shooting. I can't help but to grin every time I pull the trigger - it's just that much fun to shoot. All in all, I love the revolver and the flexibility of all the ammo that can be fired in it.

I would estimate that the .327 has more recoil than the .38 but my wife only keeps the .327 rounds in it for self defense. The .32 special rounds and the .32 H&R Mags are great to shoot. Low recoil and less blast. The .32 shorts are very much like a .22 LR recoil wise.

I wish this had been on the market last year. I have been trying to help several women who want to conceal carry firearms. They are new shooters and very recoil-shy. I see this as the perfect solution to this. They can start out with .32 long (or short if need be) and get comfortable shooting. They can then move up to an H&R mag, which is similar to a .38 special but with less than half the recoil. They may even move up to the .327 Federal magnum. Yes, you can just start with a .22 and work your way up, but with the .327 magnum, you don't have to buy a second or third gun.
