Thanks for bringing back the RPR and taking another look at it. Still on the fence about the one I own, but you provided similar results I have achieved with my sample. Cary on 😎
My RPR is chambered in 22 MAG. I shoot it at 100 yards and I am very happy with it. I have tried many brands of ammo in it and it appears to be not as fussy as 22LR. My best groups are coming from Fiocci and I am very happy with that, especially because it is relatively inexpensive. I have been considering buying another in 22LR. Have not pulled the trigger on that yet, but strongly considering it. Thanks for the great channel!
Just bought me one myself in 22 mag and at 100 yds it is getting around 1 to 1 1/2 inches with a Arken SH4J G2 scope sitting on top .... Cut the threads off the barrel and put an 11 degree target crown on it,ERGO straight grip, heavier mag release spring with a 3D printed longer mag release lever and replaced the trigger spring with a 1911 firing pin spring and it is just a tad over 2 lbs and a very crisp sweet trigger now. Mine isn't ammo picky either .... The best I have found so far that it likes is Federal SG 50gr JHP / CCi 40grn JHP and Armscor 40gr JHP .... The Armscor can be had if you look around for around $12 a bx of 50.
I’ve got a Shaw barrel on my RPR and it made a pretty noticeable difference in accuracy. You can buy those barrels for around $200 and they definitely work. If you’re ever back in Missouri to visit Chris I would definitely be down to letting you try it out.
Thanks for another awesome video Josh. I have a RPRR and it’s really the most affordable way I could have ever gotten into precision 22lr. I have read and watched everything online about these rifles. I’ve found that keeping the chamber clean is huge for mine. A clean chamber results in flawless cycling and the best accuracy. Mine runs SK plus very well also. CCI standard velocity does okay for the price in mine as well. If everything goes to plan I will be going either the Kenny route or the diy route to a 457 in the next couple of years, but for now I’m more than happy to get to run hundreds of rounds through my very budget friendly Ruger. Full disclosure, I’ve got 1/2 of original msrp in my RPRR , I got it new in 2022 in a going out of business sale. Thank you for show casing a rifle that for a lot of people, is the best option we can afford to get into a great sport.
I bought one of these a couple of years ago on clearance at Academy + a 10% Veteran's discount. Think I paid $300. I have done a few things to mine. I removed the big spring in the trigger, replaced both action screws, fixed the head space and added a Harrell's screw on tuner. It actually likes Eley SABR. A 10 shot group at 100 yds was a little less than .750". I may play with it some more this spring. BTW my new Bergara B14R really shoots well, unlike my first one.
Josh, Thanks for the video. I just bought an RPRR with an Arken SH4J and loving it. I am not always seeing MOAs, but it is affordable and a challenge. I think this rifle will shoot better as I get more time with it. I can't wait to get it on the fly target. I'm looking forward to seeing more videos on the Ruger. If you do any upgrades, please share. Maybe challenge the other major RU-vid channels to a RPR shoot off.
I appreciate you reviewing a range of rifles. I own this rifle and I enjoy seeing a great shooter, testing various brands and levels ammo. Thanks Josh!!!
@562handsomemike I'm not a serious shooter. I haven't taken time to dial in a brand that my RPR likes the best. Last time I was out, I was shooting off a bipod and no rear bag at 100yrd with Federal Auto Match 40gr. bulk. My groups were 4.5". I'm still trying to figure out what's Me, the gun, and the Ammo's contribution to the results.
When any more budget rimfire rifle offerings seem to excel shooting the more budget rimfire ammo offerings that really is a win win for the consumer! Many of the more expensive "precision" rifles usually are more ammo picky and really require the higher pricier grades of match ammo to perform up to their potential.
I had two of these and neither one would consistently shoot sub MOA groups, even with a Shaw barrel. I'd get a 0.60" group, then 0.78", 0.54", 1.22", 1.09" and then a 0.44" with CCI SV. SK Rifle Long Range was the best and averaged 0.52" but still wasn't consistently sub MOA. Sold it and bought a CZ457 and it will perform sub MOA with Wolf Match Target, Lapua Center-X, SK Rifle and SK Long Range. Very happy with it's performance and all of your help getting me there! Also, I grabbed an Arken SH-4J based on your recent video and am really liking it. So much that I will likely get 1 or 2 more of them.
Thanks for the test! I just bought this to get started in longer range 22LR shooting. Adjustable stock, 30 MOA rail, and magazines I already have brings down the entry cost. Another factor, I couldn't find a CZ 457 MTR, At-One, etc in stock.
The availability of DIY drop-in barrels for CZ 457 and RPR were key in my selection just in case the factory barrel didn't shoot or you wanted to try to improve the accuracy. From my research, Begara, Tikka and Savage barrels are not easily changed by the DIYer. I would also be interested in shooter's experiences with service quality with the different manufacturers in the case of a problem or need of spare parts.
I have a RPR and I'm pretty sure the way the handguard connects causes barrel deflection when used with a bipod if you preload the bipod. I have not shot it in over a year. I bought a CZ 457 and will not put it down. It was twice as much as my RPR but out shoots it in every way.
I can confirm that my RPR performs similar to this. CCI standard velocity does pretty well as well as the SK products. For the money, it's a decent rifle. Have I seen a stock one beat a stock CZ457 MTR? No, but I would say it performs about 80-85% as good in terms of group sizes once you have the RPR dialed. There are many companies that make aftermarket barrels for these which I am considering.
I have this rifle and I was able to get 5 shot group of 0.177” with standard velocity at 50 yards. That was once and rest were around 0.5-0.63” at 50 yards. Similar results with Norma ammo
Josh im From Argentina i got my own RPR and man..just love it It does not shoot well ammunition from my country It does not shoot well Remington of any type It does not shoot well S&B, Winchesters, or Bulck ammunition ... but Eley Match shoots well, you could say decently, but if I want it to be a laser, I use CCI Std Velocity ... there is some lots better than others...but I stopped trying because 1/4 of an inch at 50 meters every day...seems good to me, here my RPR came out to 1100 bucks, this is not US unfortunately and we don't have the possibility to find many Eley or match ammo..if life gives you lemons..keep shooting Josh, very good content !cheers
I had an RPR and put an ER Shaw barrel on it and it delivered .3 groups at 50 yards with CCI SV, sold it to my son because I let the flex in the plastic stock assembly get in my head when I was preloading on barricades.
I also have a Shaw barrel on my RPR. It shoots SK Semi-Auto Rifle really well - actually slightly better than Standard Plus, which is great considering the difference in cost. I'm hoarding as much of that ammo I can find. Today I shot 90 rounds in 5 shot groups and only one over MOA at .54. The best was a large hole at .135. For the money it has been a fun gun to shoot.
Had one. Tried every ammo I could, from Standard Velocity to the $25 a box stuff, with dismal results. Sold it and bought a CZ MTR; night and day difference. Sorry, but you couldn’t give me a RPR. Two buddies also bought one about the same time. One sold it off, and the other stuck it in his closet. I’ll guess if you put a $1000 barrel on a RPR it’d shoot, but that kinda blows the budget rifle idea. I know, I know, everyone’s got one that wins all the local 22 matches, but I soured really quickly on the rifle.
Yep, my experience too. No matter what ammunition I tried that rifle wouldn’t even group as tight as my 40+ year old 10/22. I sold it to some poor sucker who will discover the joy of mediocrity just as I did. The people who rave over these sorry rifles are the same ones who scream about the superior performance and value of their HiPoint pistols.
I believe that I would have contacted Ruger concerning that. I’ve never seen one that didn’t shoot with good ammo. I run Ely in mine and it shoots 1/2” or less at 100 yards.
Good video - I like you content. I managed to shoot a 6X5 of .370" aggregate at 50 yards with my stock RPRimfire using RWS match. The RWS Match shot better then the Special Match, but it had an ES of 51!. I tried the RPR in a PRS competion but it was a disappointment and haven't used it since. But for hauling around in the truck and shooting gophers, it is a great gun for the money.
There is an impressive 22lr precision rifle and steel match fallowing at my rifle club after attending a match I decided to get into the BR factory class 22lr rifle Due to its cost I seriously considered the RAR Precision 22lr but three members of my club have them and all three guys told me the RAR Precision was just to inconsistently inaccurate to even be considered for precision 22lr and they were using 22lr ammo in the $10-$12 a box as far as ammo quality went. After a BUTT load of research my choices were between the CZ457 MTR and a Bergara B14r and a fellow member of my club let me shoot his save for a AM 3oz trigger otherwise 100% factory B14R at 50 yards with SK Pistol Match Special ($10-$13/box) and it shot ridiculously well Im talking in the .4s and high .3s at 50 yards so $975 later I had a B14r steel barrel version and it has performed superly well for me.
Another great vid bud. Variety breaks the budget barrier. The Ruger is not my cup of tea, but I enjoy your perspective on other brands of firearms. Cheers mate.
Just bought one on Saturday. Believe it or not, it loved the Norma Tac-22, and CCI MiniMag. Shot both just under .5" groups at 50 yards. Did not like any of the Eley that I threw at it.
About to buy 22LR 1. ammo is the worst corruption of any test shoot 2. gun in a vice or not? accuracy... 3.age of shooter Recommend a rifle suited to a 60 yr old glasses wearing newbie not wanting to have to buy again before the angels come... what is the beast/best 22 for target?
@ 5:00 min in the video here. Ever rifle is different. But I was amazed when my Ruger hit a 5 shot group at like .6” @100 yards. Granted. It was 5 shots. And there is no way a Ruger keeps up with a CZ or better. But you’re right. For the price point it ain’t half bad. My son loves his haha. Their barrels seems to have issues internally from the factory. Ruger I mean.
Does go to show that some rifles really like certain ammunition and hate others... I have had such good luck with all of the s k ammunition... I picked up a matching lot of pistol match and that has been my tried and tested for the past year shooting around .420 to .440 on average at 50 and will hold moa at 100 without issues!
To anyone still looking for best bang for your buck on accuracy and price. I’ve found that sellier and bellot club .22 is the winner in this gun. I have one in 18” and it shoots 2” groups at 200 yards. It’s 5$ a box or cheaper depending on where you find it. I’m running a 60$ Amazon scope as well so those results are impressive for setup in my opinion. The only thing that not factory on the gun is a Tandemkross game changer brake. I doubt it affects performance but I thought I’d share.
I was getting 1 inch groups at 100 yards today with Eley match in my RPR with a Bushnell Match Pro. I was honestly impressed. Def feel like the gun is a good deal for the money plus I have a whole mess load of 10/22 mags anyway. CCI standard velocity could not compete with Eley at 100 yards, at least not in my gun.
I get good results with Wolf Performance Match Extra. Ten round groups are around .5" at 50 yards. I'm playing around with putting super slim shims on the muzzle threads and using the thread protector as a barrel tuner. Seems to change group sizes.
I would expect good results with the Wolf Match Extra as Eley makes the the Wolf 22LR ammo. The Extra ammo is the same as Eley Club that many get good results with. The Wolf Match Target is the same as Eley Target that does not group well for me in my Tikka T1X.
I have that set up, and it can shoot dead nut's, the problem isn't the rig but the ammo. Sure you can get lucky and shoot a good box with only a few flyers (3 out of 50) but there is still zero consistency unless you drop $25 a box of 50 or 100 in the case of the CCI green tag. None of the "Match grade ammo has zero flyers." The only consistent (by weight) to .05gn was the green tag. However there are too many variables in a round of ammo to go by weight. So my $1000 Ruger Precision rimfire is still only as good as the POS ammo. Love the video and info.
It was my starter precision rifle. It was actually decent in accuracy, but ultimately I didn't like the bolt design (sacrificial spring clip for short\long throw) and I didn't like the AR style forend. I got it to see if it was something I liked doing and since it used magazines I already had it was the best bang for the buck at the time
Kind of been my experience also. I HAD a RPR and really disliked it. I was expecting more accuracy than it could deliver. I figure when you put the word "precision" in the name it should do at least MOA at 50yds. Mine would not come close. I have 10/22's that would do just as well. Thanks for the update. JimE
Have you ever tried measuring the rim thickness of the ammo it likes and then tring other ammo brands and lots that are close to that thickness? I just started to use my rim measurement gauge and I'm looking for more ideas to get better use from it.
Two guys in our club bought this rifle and I was not impressed, neither were they. On both rifles the barrels were loose, and the system screws were unevenly torqued. And believe it or not, here where I live the Remington Precision Rimfire costs more than my CZ 457 MTR 20". And my CZ out shoots them both every time.
Mine loves cci standard velocity I shoot 1 moa at 100 yards with the cci standard velocity but I have weighed my 22 ammo to make sure that each round and case were the exact same weight so probably why I'm getting 1 moaning group with the cci standard velocity at 100 yards
I didn't catch where the distance was stated, but when you're getting ~0.5" groups with this class of rifle, it's likely at a distance of 50 yards. Shooters outside of the US often shoot at 50 meters, which is a little further out.
Thinking of adding an MPA grip to my rpr. Currently running the factory grip and want to try something with a more vertical profile. Trying to decide between it and the anarchy tuxedo. Any thoughts on one vs. the other?
Put an EC tuner on mine. You still have to go through the ammo testing process, but once you find one it likes you can fine tune out the flyers. CCI std velocity is what I settled on an it will constantly print under 1” at 100 yards. Also be sure to do the foil tape bedding and play with action torque. It just makes the rifle more consistent.
Two or three lots of CCI SV always give me at least one flier in each 5-round group with my Tikka T1X preventing the groups from being 1 MOA or smaller. SK Std Plus gives me consistent 1 MOA groups. I think some rifles may like CCI SV but most probably don't.
i would keep it around just for the fact it likes inexpensive cci sv. i keep my Savage MKII FVSR around just for that reason. cheap accurate shooting! cheers and thx !
Im editing the deadspace out to make the video easier to watch. So the groups appear to be shot really fast but im cutting out me relaoding and all that in between
Josh, i cant shoot my custom benchrest rifle anymore. How can i privately contact you. Its the one Thomas Speedy Gonzales made for me. Thanks good video.
My son’s RPR safety got “stuck”. At least it’s in the pew position, otherwise I would have had to send it in. I can’t even get it to move with channel locks.
@@PursuitofAccuracy it's a know issue with the RPR, i've taken mine apart half a dozen times to try to figure out what's the cause of it, but have been unsuccessful. cleaned everything up, lube everything and the issue is still there.
@@theheck123 being a bolt action i always just leave mag out and bolt open. When im shooting i dont close the bolt until my target is in the scope and im ready to fire. For those reasons i will never use the safety anyways
I work at the Ruger factory, have had 6 def RPR and the 2 I have now will shoot with any sub 1k rifles... I have won several matches. I bought every 22lr round know to man... To get the best out of the rifles. Both prefer totally different ammo one is like a woman shoots any high end ammo $20+ a box... The other loves sk standard+ and CCI SV 😂 both shoot .3 @ 50yrds & the 10rd aremore consent then the 15
Ruger? So they put this rifle in a fancy tactical style stock. Let's skip the stock eyewash and talk about the gun. Apparently, it's just an ordinary rimfire rifle with ordinary accuracy. You can't dress a pig.
Machine gun kelly. Come on factory stock production rifle. It's just not gonna shoot as good as a custom rifle. People get their butt cracks hurt for nothing.
