The Ruger SP-101 defies the odds. At a stout 26 ounce, this little stainless steel subcompact revolver remains a huge seller for Ruger and very popular with all types of dudes. Compared against much lighter weight alternatives like the Ruger LCR, SW Centennial, Bodyguard, or Scandium framed J-frames, the SP-101 is a portly CCW carry companion. And yet it prevails and sells. Many responsible civilians, LEOs, homeowners, and outdoorsman opt for the little SP-101 as their first choice. To hold and shoot the SP-101 is to begin to undersand why. First, its heft provides what I feel is a certain shootability is such a small form factor. If you haven't done it recently, find opportunity to do a reality check in shooting a .357 load in a subcompact revolver. The word "unpleasant" comes to mind for most with the Scandium framed S&Ws being tortuous in nature. But the 26 ounce SP-101, while still no full size or heavy gun, does manage to tame these loads to controllable and for some (like masochists like myself) even enjoyable levels (which to me opens up recreational shooting opportunities in this small gun). For many, like myself, the SP-101 is enjoyable to shoot but all will understand in practice that it is difficult to shoot well at distance. But with .357 full power loads, it is a hand cannon which barks and spits fire with authority. Maybe now we can understand its appeal. And more importantly, this little cannon is built tough and rugged, able to withstand such battering throughout its (and YOUR!) lifetime. Utilizing a cylinder crane locking pawl, a thicker frame and permissible barrel lug is realized and the SP-101 achieves amazing strength for its size. While other lighweight .357s might end up in the parts bag, the Ruger will still be chugging along. So in the estimation of thousands, the Ruger SP-101's weight is good weight. Does it make the best concealed carry choice for most though? Probably not as many will stop carrying it after some time (but many do) and many better choices abound. Also many will be satisfied with the quality of the Ruger. Fit and finish of the Ruger is adequate albeit not as good as Smith and Wesson. Consider it serviceable. Several models are offered with 2.25" and 3.06" barrel options. A few downsides: sharp edges do exist [hammer, trigger] and should be addressed by the user, firepower is limited (5 rds .38/.357, 6 rds .327 Federal), and trigger is stiff on most examples [responding nicely to competent work however]. But in this relatively high value revolver the upsides prevail (and thats why I am recommending it!): decent sight picture, ergonomic grips (easily swapped out with the stud frame design of the SP-101), accurate, and compact. So as a truck gun, home defense option, or just wilderness companion (if you system can accept the weight), the Ruger SP-101 has excelled since 1989. It is an authoritative little .357 that can last forever. /////////////////////////// Nutnfancy LIkability Scale : 8.5 out of 10 ////////////// Music by

Nice gun. Had one and enjoyed shooting it. The weight of it put it in that "Twilight Zone" category for me, somewhere between my lighter 642 pocket gun and a bigger, higher capacity holster gun. If a gun creeps up in weight or size to being a belt holster gun, at least for me, I always have to ask myself what else would ride the same way just as easily. Often, it's something I might consider more effective for whatever reason. Great little gun, though. Good review!

Call me crazy, but I think Ruger revolvers are the best option. They are tanks (yes heavier), but they last forever.

You forgot one thing...the gun, itself, can be used as a weapon when deployed to the head in a hand to had situation. It sure won't hurt this gun.

the 4 inch barrel sp101 is my EDC pistol, and yeah, it's heavy... but a good holster and belt fixed that problem fast. love my sp101!

It's a fan favorite because this gun can fit the bill for almost every aspect of what a good handgun can be useful for. Home defense, sure. Concealed carry, a bit heavy but sure. Range gun-yes- challenging to shoot well but it can be done and durable ta boot which cannot be said for a ccw specific gun. A gun to practice hand loads in? YES, built like a tank and can handle hot loads yet a short barrel to protect against weak squib loads. Bear defense? Not the best choice but with a hot hard cast .357 mag- you certainly could do worse. A first time gun purchase? Sure, .38spl is easy to shoot. An advanced shooter's choice? Sure- a .357 mag snubby is difficult to shoot but still accurate and tremendous stopping power. The list could go on and on, but what I think it really is, is that with the economy the way it is, and some people being limited to one gun and not many, a jack of all trades gun like the SP101 is the best possible choice one can make, if one gun is all someone can afford.

You're missing the point of this gun being used for backpacking. It's chambered in 357 mag and with some jacketed soft point ammo it's a good gun against black bears or cougars! Your Kel Tec 9mm won't help you in those situations!

I am the one guy who sometimes carries the SP101 as a backup gun. The weight issue is mute, when carrying appendix carry, with a Crossbreed holster specifically designed for appendix carry. If you have a good quality, BELT, which is a MUST, then carrying the SP101 is easy. I often train, presenting the SP101 as my primary, since appendix carry can sometimes be the easiest, quickest and most convent place to carry. Having the SP101 with those .357 Magnum rounds at the ready is a damn nice feeling. I can attest, that when you need deeper concealment, sometimes revolvers (with the right gear) disappear and nobody knows your carrying. Living in Florida, carrying my Glock 23 just isn't the best option, when in shorts and T shirts. Revolvers including the Sp101, work great!

I have and love this gun, I installed after market grips and that's it. I love how she handles full throttle .357 loads all day and not even breath hard. I carry this all day and i have never felt that i didn't have enough gun. If you need anymore than 5 rounds, you picked the wrong fight.

I own this gun, carry it regularly and shoot at the range with it often. I carry +p 38 as a self defense load. It is a joy to shoot -not to heavy to carry and is very accurate. I have also carried an xd 3.8. glock 30 and Kimber pro carry and keep coming back to this gun.Other than only 5 rounds I love this gun

You mention that you never heard of anyone using the SP101 as a backup. Well, now you have. I carry an SP101 and a Glock 30SF daily and have done so for 2 years. Weight is not a problem and the recoil is not as bad as many would think; the weight is a benefit. My groupings are within 2 inches at 25 yards and 0.5 inches at 7 yards both using double action (my SP101 is double action only). LOVE THE GUN!

I bought this gun as my first. I handled pretty much every j frame made at a local gun show. As soon as I picked it up I knew it was different. This thing is a tank in a good way. My model is the doa version and after extensive dry firing the trigger has smoothed nicely. That dry firing also gave me a good chance to get used to the long double action pull. This is a perfect carry gun and a perfect first gun to buy with recreation carry purposes in mind. It can certainly go the long haul.

I dropped a trigger job on it and it makes a SHIT TON difference. 8lbs in DA is so so smooth. Smoothed out all the rough edges with fine grit sand paper. This gun is super smooth now. Just a bad ass little tank!

I've carried mine everyday for the last 15 years. Don't even notice the weight. It's compact, shoots straight and always goes boom. Much better than the 1911 compact I used to carry.

I got the 3" SP101. It's a fantastic carry gun. I'm not even a big guy (5'6", 135lbs), but when I put it in my Crossbreed Supertuck holster, it conceals very nicely. Don't waste your money on the S&W Airweight. Those things are no fun to shoot. The 27oz SP101 handles .38 Specials like butter. Good stopping power with minimal recoil. The .357 magnums are a little more exciting, but still manageable. Highly recommended for concealed carry, car gun, and home defense.

Compared to a S&W, it's a couple hundred cheaper. I think mine was about $350 new. And what do you give up when spending less money? Well, it feels much more substantial than a featherweight revolver. And not just clunkier... it's well fit, smooth operating, and good looking. It's a solid quality gun with great reliability. And when you ever actually get around to shooting 357mag, it soaks up recoil and feels like a light revolvers shooting +P.38 I think most people buying them aren't carrying them either on a daily basis either. Sure, some people probably do but then again some people carry full size 1911s too. SP101s are probably more often in gloveboxes, backpacks, and nightstands than in waistbands. So you get to save money while buying a more substantial firearm that is more enjoyable to shoot. Win win win. It's no mystery why Ruger sells aot. I got a 3" SP101 for my wife. It's an excellent simple to use home defense weapon for people who aren't into guns. With standard or +P .38 they're tame enough for even the girliest girls to shoot. And when I'm feeling macho I can load up some Nuclear 357 and engage in a bit of shooting range masochism.

The weight of the SP101 was what sold me on it. I simply liked the way it felt & fired. Not to mention it's built like a brick $hit house. I've put 100 rounds through mine in the month I've owned it, not a hint of trouble.

If I could post a picture I would; Ruger SP101 3", 30 yards standing... Sub 2" group. This gun is amazing. Also, know this; recoil occurs after the shot is fired. Recoil does not affect accuracy as much as many people seem to think. Accuracy is the quality of the shooter, the quality of the gun and the quality of the round.

+nutnfancy the 4 inch version has been my EDC pistol for the past year, and it ain't uncomfortable at all. so long as you have a GOOD holster and a GOOD belt, you really shouldn't have a problem with weight... yeah, you're gonna know it's there, but it isn't like you're carrying a block of lead around on your hip. i use a Simply Rugged Silver Dollar Pancake holster with a custom made "no scratch" gun belt (i'm a mechanic), and i also use a Galco shoulder holster on occasion as well.

The SP101 shoots like a BOSS. It shoots almost as accurately as full sized 4 inch k frames. I have had a couple kel-tecs. I too was enticed by the "firepower" and slimness of the gun. I have repeatedly had to fix feed/extraction issues with these cheap guns; at best they are a tinkerer's gun. The most desirable feature of a defensive firearm should be reliability. DO NOT BUY A KELTEC as a CCW. Buy a gun you can rely upon. Don't buy into the silliness of NUTnfancy's shill corporate sponsorship of KELTEC firearms. None of the guns made by them are designed to be reliable. They are designed to have points that can be checked off on a silly list of user features that make them more flashy and desireable for someone that buys into the "tactical" gear obsessed mindset of strange internet preppers.

I carry my SP101 daily, in a leather K frame slide holster, in fact, it's my only daily carry gun. I have several firearms at home, but they usually only see daylight when going to the range. I've moved over to revolvers full time for protection, specifically the SP101! ! It is a little heavy but it reminds you constantly that the firearm is still on your hip! Also the weight helps manage the recoil very well. I couldn't imagine shooting .357 out of the newer polymer style revolvers. Great vid!

I once bought some gun show reload .38 ammo, and took my SP101 to the range, not aware of hazards of shooting other peoples reloads. I also had never had a under power load before and when I heard a soft pop, it didn't regester in my mind. So I shot again, and the next round blew the stuck round out! No damage to gun or its owner! Thats one tough gun.

I've been considering getting this revolver for my mother. She lives alone and doesn't have the strength to operate the slides on most automatics. (Was in a car accident. She can shoot just fine but certain movements are really weak for her.) She's also left handed so finding a gun that suits her is a chore. Revolvers to a large extent solve those problems.

I stuck to it, that is what I carry every day. Good belt, good holster, no problem.

I do love the sp-101, their GP 100 series is just golden. I've been a revolver fan since my first 686 smith .357 I carried in the line of duty. I carry a 642 for this POU, but I wouldn't "kick out of bed" the sp if it's all I had for a ccw. Happy New Year man! Love the video reviews, as always. Stay safe man.

I had been wondering about getting something more up-to-date for CCW carry, so I could retire my good-old S&W M 60 that I've been carrying pretty much every waking hour, since the mid-70's. I've heard SO much about the improvements in the design and materials used in making the bullets, powder, and the firearms themselves, that I'd decided on an Airweight +P 38 as a replacement , for pocket holster carry. I've heard SO much about the weight of the SP 101, and the muzzle blast of a 357 from a snubby barrel, that I'd reluctantly discarded that choice. This will probably sound a bit contradictive, but your discouraging review of this revolver for such a purpose has convinced me to go stand in line, and pay whatever premium I must to obtain one. If I find myself in the position to protect myself or someone who relies on me for protection, I'm going to want something small enough to avoid "printing", but possessing enough WACK to perform the desired effect, NOW ! " Oh, it's so Heavy ", "Oh, it has an inconvenient amount of muzzle blast/flash"! I have my doubts that I'll anything less on me if this retired Deputy Sheriff has to stand between an aggressive screwball with a weapon, or a large predator of some type, and innocent folks just minding their business. Keep up the good work sir !

I got one of the first SP101s, it's in 38 Special only. Great gun.

I agree on the whole "more likely to carry" argument, but the .357 KILLS 9mm, or any popular center-fire pistol cartridge. So I can see why some people would prefer the SP101. Great review btw. Entertaining and informative.

One reason I like my SP-101 in 357 because it will shoot the Buffalo Bore 180 grain 1400 fps load. That's a powerful load in a small easy to carry package. There is much to love about the SP-101. I've had mine for over 15 years. Yes practice is necessary to shoot it well.

Great video Nutn as always. Thank you and keep them coming. I've carried my sp-101 2.25" concealed legally for the past 6 months and I enjoy it despite its limitations (weight, #rounds). I don't feel under-armed with 1-2 speedloaders, though I prefer the S.L. Variant to the Hks for a number of reasons. My only wish is that it came in a blued version.
