One of the real dangers of load development processes is jumping to conclusions based on group size during testing. The load development process needs to contain checks and balances to prevent selecting a load that is balancing on the edge of a razor.

This one hit home... I have loads in .308 and .300 Win Mag... The .308 is a Type 1 pushing a 175 MK at 2550. Slow but pinpoint accurate. The 300 Win Mag is a 225 ELDM @ 2880... Good velocity, but grouping can be fickle depending on conditions... And it's on the upper end of the min-max limit. So probably not too friendly where brass life is concerned.

Is it fair to say that knowing what node you have: 1,2, or 4 is only identifiable when you shoot quite a bit of those nodes? Its great to have a way to identify the node characteristics, but the only way in my mind here to know what is what is to shoot in different temps, winds with the various loads. so identify 2 or maybe 3 nodes, load up some of each and then shoot them and determine what they do.
@recgolf
@recgolf Год назад
Thank you for the content. Great as always! When I think of "a node" I think of some combination of factors that are consistent: velocity nodes, barrel harmonics nodes, optimal barrel time nodes, etc. Do your type 1, 2, and 4 nodes represent any combination of factors? Do they all have some mixture of similar factors, but in different proportions? Ultimately the target tells the tale of the tape, but what should we be looking for to identify nodes?

I keep finding type 4's. 5 round group 1-5 I'll have 1, 3, and 5 all touch during seating adjustment. Pick #3 because it's in the middle and it opens up like 2 and 4 on the next trip out. Maybe a gas gun thing, probably a me thing.
@Mr.Killswitch
@Mr.Killswitch Год назад
Semi autos have 2 recoil impulses to manage. The initial bang and then bcg slamming back. Could be part of your issue? Little more perfection required than a bolt gun.
@randomidiot8142
@randomidiot8142 Год назад
@@Mr.Killswitch you say that but you couldn't know I use a Cali mag release to lock the bolt back after every shot, and a BAD lever to manually load to minimize heat soak into the powder. I have one impulse during the shot. The bullet is long gone by the time my action cycles to the rear anyway. 24" rifle gas 7.62x39, just enough gas to cycle, brass looks like bolt gun brass. I've managed a single 1/2 moa group when I wasn't trying, everything else is pretty pathetic. Brass is trimmed and bumped .002, annealed, powder trickled on an A&Dfx120i. Velocities are tight. It either has super tight windows that it likes or it's just erratic and nothing will fix it.

I'm newer to F-Class pushing the 184 Berger at 2778 average in my straight 284 in a 32" Krieger w/ Lapua Brass, H4831SC . Which type node would you classify that as based on your experience? I feel like it's maybe the type 2 because the next node is around 2825 and I start to hit pressure above that. I have no idea where my type 1 would be because I started LD near my current velocity.
@winninginthewind
@winninginthewind Год назад
I tried that, and the 2775 node acted like a Type 4. 2825ish is a Type 2 in my recollection. I ended up moving to H4350 because it is more forgiving in the PNW.
