You need to reset your sprint somehow to deal the maximum knockback. Common ways to do this are block hitting(tap block once right after you hit your oponenet), and w-tapping(let go of w right after you hit your oponenet).
Sounds like me to me. I always let my brother get 4-0 then comeback 5-4. However, ladder fight on bedwars practice is the complete opposite, I get wrecked.
