After a few weeks using the Ruixin Pro III sharpener (similar to the Edge Pro Apex), after watching several videos and finding some good ideas, I’ve decided to join them in a single tutorial video of how I’ve being using the Ruixin Pro III. This is an excellent and really inexpensive system when compared to some famous systems which cost more than 10x it’s value. This one is all stainless steel with no plastic parts and I've paid only U$18,50 with 4 stones (July2016). With some simple DIY, this is undoubtedly one of the best value for your money as for today. In this video I’ll show what I’ve modified/improved, as I felt the need using it through these weeks. What I show is definitely not the absolute truth, it’s just how I use it. So if you use it differently, please do not change the way you use. One thing I didn’t mention is that I’ve placed a washer between those two parts that holds the horizontal rod on the vertical rod, and I’ve tighten it a bit more because it came a little bit wobbly from factory.
UPDATE 2019
I made a major upgrade to the joint system last year and I took some pictures today. I'm using an aluminum block I made with an 8mm Rose Joint. A new 8 mm slide rod was needed to match the rose joint opening. This is not the easiest mod because you need a lot of specific tools to cut the aluminum block, make the inner thread for the rose joint etc, but it's definately worth it if you can.

Wow ... I think You must be proud of this. I can tell that this is the most clever modified sharpener video among all the other videos I've seen. And it helped me a lot. You are very smart to use magnets under the steel plates to hold the knife. Instead of using the original grips made of steel plates. That shows that you care about the details. To prevent scratches from the scraper blade to the steel plate. It also makes it easier to use. Very impressive I adapt it according to the way you do everything. Well, let's just say it works very well. Thank you 🙏🏻

I had been looking at several sharpening system options and was undecided until I watched your excellent video. I bought the Ruixin Pro 3 and all the bits you described to upgrade it exactly as you showed. The N52 magnet is a perfect fit and amazingly strong. I also made leather and balsa strops which I probably would have spent a fortune buying without your inspiration. I have to say how grateful I am that you took the time to produce your tutorial and also how pleased I am with my finished, upgraded system. Thank you for a genuinely useful video. 👍

I ordered one of these a few days ago, and knowing it was about to arrive, I went looking for some info on assembly and use, and i'm glad I did, because nothing came with the sharpener. Thank you so much! I put on the waterproof tags on the stones (great idea), and will probably build a wooden base for it, too. This was incredibly helpful, and I appreciate it greatly. Thanks.

Best video on knife sharpeners on here. Not only because of the great modifications done clearly enough to follow, but because other people just whine and complain and don't even try to solve the problems. You found problems I would never have thought of until I stumbled into them, much better to sort them all out from the start. Brilliant, thanks :)

I believe you can. If it has approximately the same length and thickness to fit, you can use it. I don’t use them because imo the natural stones are better.

I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm ru-vid.comUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

This is a very helpful video. Without it I would have had trouble making this sharpener work, and you made the job so easy to understand. I built the stand, ordered the magnets, bought the O-rings and a flange nut for the stand, and I just need the drill stop. Shopping for a better set of stones, and practicing on some knives I made from scratch.

This is brilliant. In a world where time = money, I think this video proves that spending more for a system which already has all of these upgrades built in is worth it :D
@Iversonfr1985
@Iversonfr1985 6 лет назад
I don't know... the system itself cost me U$20, and then I used some extra money to buy some great quality stones. The system I would buy instead of this one that was really worth the upgrades was U$299. If you feel no difference spending U$300 instead of U$20 than you should go for it, but that's definately not my case lol. I don't know nowadays what systems are there to buy, I stopped looking after I finished this one.

Thank you for the mods, they do enhance this sharpener. It inspired me to purchase it. I bought it for the base and the pivot rod really. I used grommets instead of O'rings, so no need of the Drill stop. and I swapped the rods and use the short one for the pivot, therefore I get full extension on the stones. I use gatco and lansky "stones" with it ( haven't even opened the ones which came with it} Mostly though I use eze-lap diamond stones to do all the initial rough in bevelling.

Great ideas and tips. I have the same system, but I use this only for small folding and hunting knives. For longer kitchen knives, I use the traditional whetstones with free hand. It is a bit complicated to insert the stones, set the angles, use hex tools, etc. It is worth using this for expensive or coated blades. For cheap, everyday kitchen knives, it is better to use big water stones. If I accidentally scratch them, it is not a big issue.

My Ruixen Pro arrived yesterday. Just finished using it a moment ago. 1st ever attempted at sharpening a knife. Blade was very dull but after going up to only 1500 it's really, really sharp. Took about 20 mins. Didn't really bother with angles etc but I'm delighted by the result. Will be more conscientious on next knives and will certainly be adopting some of your upgrades. Thanks for this clip. I bought the apparatus because of this clip to be honest

I bought them all on eBay, but Aliexpress is an alternative too. There were tons of sellers a few months ago, but nowadays there are just a few, you need to search a little bit as "natural sharpening stone" like these ads. www.ebay.com/itm/150x20x5mm-200-to-10000-Sharpening-Grindstone-Polishing-Stone-with-Base-/271911243878?var=570746700854&hash=item3f4f2c5066:m:mPDzizsgx-NxGOHFMl_C9Hw www.ebay.com/itm/10000-8000-Grit-Natural-Agate-Whetstone-Knife-Sharpening-Stone-Grindstone-Q0XB-/141874493490?var=441009003219&hash=item210860f832:m:mzet3iAL_vU-4d7avGjmcHQ

Best purchase I ever made on eBay. Got it yesterday, bolted it down and hacked away. Excellent product, nice vid too. Looking forward to learning proper techniques and knife sharpening vocabularies, I saw a product review of a beautiful Russian made sharpener last year. 400USD I think. So getting this 20AU product, I had no expectations. Deeply satisfied.

Abs!

I really like that this sharpener has the ability to clamp the blade in place. On knives that don't have a large flat area on the blade, it's too easy to rock the blade and mess up the angle while sharpening it. That's the main reason I never invested in an Edge Pro Apex. There are other sharpeners out there that clamp the blade, but they're super expensive and I don't want to spend $300 on a sharpening system just to sharpen my $40 Kershaw. I might give the Ruixin Pro III a try.

I have the previous model (v. II) with the vacuum-mount plastic base and round swiveling clamp, which does swivel, but doesn't clamp or vacuum-mount worth a damn! The only fixes I came up with was to drill thru the base 3x and mount it on 6"*12"*1" oak, stake the swivel ball with a wood screw and make a block to support the back end, stopping the platform from leaning left or right. I'm using 4 stacked 2"*1"*1/2" ceramic magnets, not neo type. The best mod was to cut a harbor freight bastard file down to ~5.5" and epoxy it to an aluminum duplicate of the plastic stone bases. Really speeds up re-profiling process. I Dremel/diamond bit engraved the bases with stone grades instead of paper labels. Totally waterproof. Great video, BTW. But the only thing you didn't do was list all the awesome, killer blues backing tracks. SRV I caught, but all the rest? Who, please?

The music I got on royalty free websites so youtube won't block my video. It really looks a lot like SRV, but I just don't remember where I got them. I got the Ruixin Pro for about 6 months ago for about $20 and found that I could now get all my knives not razor-sharp but pretty sharp which I had not been able to do in the past. The only drawback that I can see is that the stones wear out pretty fast... to alleviate the problem, I now only sharpen all my knives using down-strokes to prevent the chiselling effect of the knives cutting into the stones.

Gave it a go and I think I did ok! had to read up a little more about the "Burr" which now makes sense! 2 quick questions....do you dilute the dish washing liquid? and re the tape that you place down on the stand to protect the knife....would you consider gluing something down permanently? I guess it would need to be soft enough but water resistant? cheers JMM

Oh and my kit only had upto 1500 grit I think I might need to add to the collection.
@Iversonfr1985
@Iversonfr1985 6 лет назад
I use soapy water, no too much soap. I wouldn't recommend you gluing something permanent because the paper ends up pretty damaged when dragging the knife left and right. I always replace it one or two times while sharpening. I recommend you buying at least a 3000, 6000 and 10000 to add to your collection. Making the strops with the compounds does help a whole lot more.
@LeghornM
@LeghornM 6 лет назад
Many thanks maybe I need to try a different soap bottle! Oh and one thing with my board, I didn't cut out the front end so that you can sharpen scissors, so I have left my board quite large (and heavy so it's pretty stable) What I plan on doing though is drilling a hole that the black handle can fit into so that I can have both hands free when cleaning the stone and adding soap! I thought I would be able to post an image here but I'm sure you know what I mean......Oh funny story I sharpened a few knives, a couple better than others so I did the paper demonstration for my wife. She then said " I hope it can cut meat" I said shit what do you mean meat? Everyone on RU-vid only cut paper!!!

On another video a guy used an indelible marker to blacken the cutting face, it makes it much easier to see where you are grinding, i learned the same trick 30 plus years ago as an engineering apprentice, we used engineering blue to mark high spots when filing whilst trying to get a flat surface, but marker pen is better in my opinion, great video, i had totally forgotten how to put my sharpener together lol, not used it in ages :) ordered some of those magnets,and some cheap diamond stones from china/ebay for roughing out, what great ideas, the other mods will be done also, thank you for this video :)
@ifr3293
@ifr3293 5 лет назад
Thank you! The black marker is useful when you want to find the angle of a knife instead of changing it's angle. My knifes are all 12, 15 and 20 degrees, so I use the angle meter to set that. But when I sharpen a friend's knife for example I use the marker to find the original angle, you mark the bevel with the pen and you stroke once with a 800 grit stone for example. If 100% of the marker gets removed, the angle matches. If remains some on the tip, the angle is too low, if remais some on the base os the bevel, the angle is too high.

great upgrades.... new units come with a wingless blade holder bolt, but the magnet trick is the way to go ... I used a 90 pound rated magnet... no issues at all holds tight. great base too.. I used a butcher block about 1.5 inches thick... and placed the guide rod holder in the center as you did, then offset it as it was when in the metal base, the offset allows the stone to hit more of the blade.... thanks... to all thinking about buying one of these>>> great sharpener, buy one !!
@Iversonfr1985
@Iversonfr1985 7 лет назад
Sounds like you made a really nice base! I've recently placed some 3M round taper rubber feet under the base, helps a lot. The magnet I use has 60x20x10 mm and it's rated 60 pounds, holds pretty tight too. Makes sense what you mentioned about offsetting the guide rod, but unfortunately the holes would be too close, so I can't redo it now. Maybe I'll cut another base to try what you said. Thanks!

Abs!

Thanks for this awesome instruction! Only one flaw in your assembly - I think you should mount the pole off-center like it was originally. Not in the center.

Any reason it should be off centre? Genuine question here - is it to do with the curve in the blade towards the tip of the knife?

Great vid, just a thought for you. I thought maybe gluing a small tin (Altoids, Sucrets, Etc.) behind the vertical post, to store the o-rings (maybe a spare o-ring or 2), the drill stop, & the hex key storage. Overall, fantastic instructional video!

*A little help?* Based on this video. I bought this model, understanding that I'm basically buying a DIY parts kit. I'm still using the clamp. I'll get the magnet later on. I've got a couple junk knives that I wanted to practice on. I used oil on my stones, an angle gauge (same app as the one shown here, actually) set to 18 degrees, and used the full length of the stone to keep the wear consistent. I went from roughest to smoothest. I used the weight of the stone/bar, and did not apply much if any pressure. I was obviously removing tonnes of metal as the stones blacked rather quickly. I did not, however, clean the stone between every flip. I used a jeweller's loupe to examine the edges, the parts toward the spine were clearly, but unevenly delineated, but the edge itself was consistent. I can't get them sharp enough to even pass the paper test, let alone the arm-hair test. Suggestions? PS: I have four basic needs. The first is just a good sharp bush knife. The second is my various kitchen knives. The third are all purpose utility knives. The fourth are killing knives, and these must be *literally* as sharp as a fresh straight-razor. Any suggestions welcome, none too basic, if pertinent.
@Iversonfr1985
@Iversonfr1985 7 лет назад
If you do not clean the stone after every single flip, the steel particles will fill the pores of the stone and you will stop getting a consistent edge. The particles will even start hitting the edge damaging it. This is absolutely a must. Depending on the stone, I clean twice per side. For your bush knife, use 30 degrees at least. For you kitchen knives 20. Use lower angles only on good steel like vg10, sg2, etc. Even my Victorinox has a 20 degree edge.

Iversonfr1985 _"If you do not clean the stone after every single flip, the steel particles will fill the pores of the stone and you will stop getting a consistent edge."_ Yup, learned that! :) Some other things that I didn't know enough to mention. My knife didn't have a bevel on it. It's an old, old, old buck knife. So I ground a bevel on it. Now it has at least some edge. It's basically a bit sharper than a butter knife, now. The other thing is that I had to apply some pressure. I didn't want to abuse the knife, seeing as I was trying to bring it back to life. You have to use _some_ pressure. Now that I have a bevel, I think my next move from the 120 to the 320 and give it 200-300 strokes on each side. If it improves, I'll move up. If not, then I know I'm still doing something wrong. Also, I don't know if this is important, or if it is merely a matter of preference, but all of my strokes were draws off of the edge, never against. Does it matter, or should I be also pushing toward the spine?
@Iversonfr1985
@Iversonfr1985 7 лет назад
Having no bevel you have to recreate one, that's a little bit trickier. You have to spend a lot more time grinding with the coarser stones. If you have a belt grinder you could even start the new bevel with it, and then proceed to the ruixin. It's ok to apply some pressure, that's actually needed. I'm applying some pressure even with the 10000 grit and the first strop. The number of strokes is not important, just keep eye checking the bevel until you see an even edge, and ALWAYS keep your stone clean. The stroke's direction is not important either, apply pressure going in and out to save some time. I just can't think of anything more, I really do sharpen my knives today the exact same way I showed in the video. The only thing is that I swapped the leather with the balsa wood.

Well, I ground one out with out 100 strokes each side with the 120 stone. Can you recommend quality stones that will fit this machine? Name brands or links would be appreciated, if you can spare the time.
@Iversonfr1985
@Iversonfr1985 7 лет назад
The best stones I have are like this link below. They are natural stones, a bit more expensive, but much better. www.ebay.com/itm/Nutural-ruby-240-10000-Grit-Kitchen-Knife-sharpener-whetstone-oil-stone-sanying-/201654161897?var=500963871027&hash=item2ef38651e9:m:myzCgsamIsnPqZLUcDZ25zQ I actually have 3 stones from this seller above. All stones with plastic base on eBay will fit this system. Search as "natural sharpening stone" and sort by cheaper first, that you will find other sellers. TomTop is another seller that sells a brand "Anself", they are great too, I have one.

Curious how the the bracket was attached to the base with the machine screws. A nut at the bottom of the hole wouldn't thread thru. The Vertical rod assembly shows a nut put in the hole drilled. since it is such a short length it's curious how it managed to be at the right depth to provide enough stability to the vertical support. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks again for a great video.

i have a. question for you how do you keep the stones from wearing down? I am using dawn dish soap on the stones and they still seem to be dishing out in the center! I just got this unit and am just getting used to it and have only played with three knives and my stones are half gone!
@Iversonfr1985
@Iversonfr1985 7 лет назад
The stones do wear down slowly, but I think you might be pressing too hard or sharpening for too long on each side. My original stones wore down completely after something around 50 knives. The Natural stones do last longer, mines are still like new, they're definately worth it.

I bought one of these and it works... you just gotta learn how to work with it though as it has some functionality issues such as the clamp that SUPPOSED to hole the knife in place does not work very well and rod on mine keep jamming if i don’t move the rod straight up and down even with a good amount of grease applied to the rod. Other than that it works ok for its intended purpose...

Great video, thanks for uploading. But about the point at the end about making a cheap knife sharp, just about any crappy knife can be sharpened razor sharp, it just won't hold the edge very long compared to something made with decent steel.

Hi, the rod has 7mm, so the o'ring needs to be a little bit less. This one has 6mm on the inside and the thickness of the rubber is 4mm. I actually bought the thickest o'ring I found with an internal diameter of 6mm.
