Rule 87: Tenses in Indirect Statement

As we continue exploring indirect speech in Latin, it's important to think about the tense of the verb / infinitive in an indirect statement. Infinitives have only three tenses, and we need to think about these tenses as reflecting relative rather than absolute time. So a present infinitive shows an action happening at the same time as the head verb, a perfect infinitive an action has is already complete with the head verb occurs, and a future infinitive an action that has yet to happen.

I’ve noticed that for future infinitives, latin dictionaries tend to include an “esse,” as in “casurum esse.” But in your examples in this video you don’t include the “esse.” Is the “esse” unnecessary? Can “casurum” function as a future infinitive even without the “esse?” By the way, thanks for the all the great content. You have done such a great job with this series and I really appreciate all the effort to help those of us trying to learn.

Yes. I believe it’s far more common to not see the esse, in fact.

I'd love a series sorted by category.... "Special rules for the accusative" Special rules for the Dative" "Special rules for the infinitive" Etc. Etc. Etc.

I have playlists for each of these cases, e.g., ru-vid.com/group/PLI76N29qybf-tbvf8IpfNYG21-5VW4HWS. I have other videos in these playlists as well, but it's a good start!
