Somebody told me about this before and I was like MEH!!! But then I just watched it for the hell of it today on Crave (TMN) and I was totally blown away. Ozzy one of my favorite music perferred native musicians because he felt they had the best sense of rhythm. I didnt know that part of ozzy. I too didn't care much about the native thing about stuff I just wanted to play. Now I'm pow wow drumming and learning my roots.

shadowspawn2000official sounds like you are Native American yourself. If so you have to dig your roots man, there's nothing like it. I'm not Native American but I've been in touch with my roots for years now and my self-pride level is through the roof; no one can look down on me and make me feel it. Since I know who I am and where I come from, my creativity is incredibly higher and people can see my roots in my walk and hear it when I talk. So be proud brother, as I am of you.

Robbie's right. Be careful who you tell. That's why I can get enrolled. My grandfather refused to admit he was Native, and ran away from Oklahoma to avoid the Dawes Roll (You didn't have a choice, you HAD to enroll), and he didn't want grandma to enroll. They went back to Oklahoma a few years after the Dawes closed in 1906.

I saw this film last night and was too shy to say why i felt compelled to see it. I watched the film Soldier Blue in the seventies and it had such a huge effect on me. The movie itself was heartrending but it was Buffy St Marie singing the theme song that resonated. She has such an emotive singing voice that dripped persecution and anger and how to fight back, all rolled up in that voice. I was totally mesmerised. The history of Native Americans and all indigineous people needs to be told and who better to tell that story than by all the talented singers and musicians highlighted in this film. Well done and thank you.

@ianturnbow7011
@ianturnbow7011 3 года назад
Depends on the tribe and part of the country. I grew up knowing Indians as Indians and natives based on tribal affiliation. If someone said they were Indian but didn’t specify, you could ask which tribal affiliation or ancestry they have. Not the same, but it’s like being Hispanic/Latino. Asking another person of Latino ancestry where their heritage is isn’t inherently offensive.

This film was amazing! I may have to watch it a couple more times. Incredible footage, telling an important story. I'm a musician who attended a music school and at NO TIME did any instructor ever say "oh yeah, most contemporary music was influenced by native Americans." I later went on to study anthropology at a university, majoring in native American culture & at NO TIME did any professor say "Oh, btw, native Americans were a huge influence on popular music!" "Be proud you're an Indian, but be careful who you tell." This Sundance Festival award-winning documentary highlights Link Wray, Robbie Robertson,, Buffy Ste. Marie, Randy Castillo (Ozzy Osbourne 's drummer) , and session guitarist Jesse Ed Davis (think of the solo in Jackson Browne' s Doctor My Eyes; he also played for Taj Mahal), and the band Redbone (Come and Get Your Love) among others. They all have one thing in common, they're all incredible musicians with indigenous native North American roots. I just watched this documentary on The Knowledge Network and was blown away. As a member of a tribe destroyed by New England colonists after King Phillips War this blew my mind and brought everything full circle and into focus, it all suddenly made sense, much of what many tribes went through is documented but not New England, it was a brutal genocide, probably the worst where many many tribes ceased to exist, most maps don't even mention them, Quinnipiac, Montowese, Mamauguin, Totoket, Menunkatuck, Paugussett, Tunxis and probably 50 more just in Ct, most only know Mohegan and Pequot because of the casinos. I don't know if I'm Manhatten or Quinnipiac or what, I do know that the survivors of King Phillips War were taken into slavery, some sent to Virginia to work tobacco fields or outside the US, others built the millions of miles of stone walls in New England and were melded in with the African slaves, for the next few hundred years they were both referred to as the N word. My ancestor Prince Duplex won his freedom by fighting in the Revolution, he was lucky. I have been trying to trace back beyond him, he and his later family were catergorized as either African or Mullatto, yet everyone that was pictured and off spring to this day are light skinned and have Native American features. So many musical genre's come from Native American sources it isn't funny, I feel it and now I know it.
@kahlilboi
@kahlilboi Год назад
You feel it and know what?? What musical genres exactly ??? What popular musical form were created by native Americans?? I'm dying to know, it wasn't blues, jazz, ragtime ,swing, rock and roll, stride music, banjo music, string band, spirituals, gospel, boogie woogie, zydeco, creole music, new jack swing, soul, techno, house music, go go music,r&b,bebop, Doo wop, hip hop, Fife and drum blues, barbershop quartet and barber shop music ,skiffle music, jugband,spasm band, quiet storm, beach music, neo soul, rap, funk music and disco it certainly wasn't none of these musical genres these were African American creations none of these came from native Americans or native American sources , when it comes to influences, contributions, inspiration and creating musical genres African Americans are a billions miles a head of native Americans that it's not even funny to compare 😂 you guys are a footnote in American music history. We actually created and popularized dances, created and set fashion trends. Don't mistake native Americans being apart of these genres as the inspiration or creators of these genres, they certainly weren't. Native Americans came on the scene after blacks laid down the foundation of blues, jazz, ragtime, swing,rock and roll. native Americans started doing black music 😂 they didn't create nor help create any of these genres they were apart of.

Lol I have been into and playing blues music since I was a kid. In truth there are many influences involved from many cultures. But Charlie Patton is considered the to be one of the original blues players (at least as far back as recorded music goes) and was very influential. Every time someone tells me that blues is black music I ask them if they have heard of Charlie Patton. The more informed ones have. Then I ask them if they have ever seen a picture of him. I know that the first time I saw him it surprised me. How black does he look to you? Jesse Ed Davis was a BEAST on the guitar, nobody would have ever heard of Duane Allman if he hadn't copped Jesse Ed's slide licks. Not that Duane wasn't talented in his own right, it takes talent and I great ear to cop licks like that from a record. One person who could have been included was Steve Gaines, pretty sure he was at least part Native and an absolutely incredible guitarist. Looking forward to seeing the movie.

Charlie Patton was part black and was seen as black by some of his peers and learned from black Americans like Henry Sloan 😂 prince mccoy, daddy stovepipe and stovepipe no. 1 and Butler may, jaybird Coleman, Jim Jackson an artist who Charlie Patton sampled etc etc were way before Charlie Patton 😂 the blues didn't start with Charlie Patton and roots of blues and jazz can be trace back to Africa. The Jimi Hendrix section is way off base. For one thing, his step-sister Janie is not a good source (he had several siblings by blood). More importantly, there is no mention of "I Don't Live Today", a hit from his first album that he always introduced live as "Dedicated to the American Indian" and whose lyrics are directly on point. He also recorded an instrumental piece often posthumously titled "Cherokee Mist". On top of that, although his rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock certainly expresses rage and frustration, it ends on a magnificent, harmonious passage with a gorgeous tone (after an emotional quotation of "Taps"). The sampled acoustic version of "Hear My Train A-Comin" ...pales...in comparison to the electronic blues MASTERPIECE performed at Berkeley (and at other venues). Native Americans may not have invented the electric guitar, but Link Wray would not have had much impact on an acoustic. (They didn't domesticate the horse, but became expert riders.)

WINTER AND SIT THEIR ASSES DOWN LIKE MAMMA-BOUY WEENIES, AND SAY NOTHING. SHOOT FOR 2021. WASN'T EVEN MENTIONED THIS YEAR. LIKE PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THE HISTORY. GO TO LINKWRAYTRIBUTE.COM. AND READ SOME OF THE STORIES CHRIS SCOVITCH REMEMBERS ABOUT LINK WRAY IN THE WASHINGTON D.C. AREA IN THE 60'S & 70'S. They aren't, but watch a pow wow on you tube and they refer to themselves as Indians over and over. Why don't you go to the next one and personally tell them.
